How to install roller damper and rockring

When installing the stabilizer on a bicycle, you will need the following tools: a crank puller, a carriage puller, a set of hexagons or a set of Torx wrenches, a Phillips screwdriver, an adjustable wrench or a wrench:

  1. First, you need to make sure that the bike frame supports the “calm” setting. To do this, on the right side of the frame, on the carriage assembly, there must be special mounting ears with holes for bolts. If there are any, then the frame supports the installation;
  2. After making sure that installation is possible, it is necessary to remove the crank (connecting rod) from the bicycle frame along with the sprockets from the fastener side, and also dismantle the carriage or carriage cup, if this is possible. For this stage you will need a connecting rod puller, which requires a wrench and a carriage puller, depending on the type of which you may need a wrench;
  3. After this procedure, install the structure according to the mounting holes. It is worth remembering that after installing the carriage stabilizer, the chainline changes, so when installing the carriage in the seat, it is necessary to adjust this indicator using spacer rings. For this step you will need hexagons or a Phillips screwdriver, depending on the type of bolts on the bicycle carriage;
  4. After installing the carriage and adjusting it, you should reinstall the crank with stars. At this stage, the rockring is installed, which is installed instead of or on top of the outermost drive sprocket of the bicycle. In order to put on the rockring, you need to unscrew the bonnets with hexagons (the bolts that secure the front stars together), and then return them to their place;
  5. Next, put the chain on the bike and adjust the “calm down” rollers so that its operation is correct;
  6. Depending on the type of “changeguide” design, the installation of the chain occurs in the assembled or unfastened state, where in the latter it will be necessary to pull the chain through the roller. At this stage, you will need screwdrivers to adjust the rollers and other parts of the damper;
  7. After all installations and final checks have been completed, the chain tension should be checked. To do this, you need to switch from one speed to another, thereby finding out whether it is necessary to lengthen or shorten the length of the chain so that the “calm down” adequately performs its function.

Purpose and design of the VAZ 2107 timing chain damper

The damper dampens jerks and vibrations of the timing chain, which usually occur when the engine starts. An increase in the vibration amplitude of the chain can lead to its breaking off the crankshaft guide gears and timing shaft. Moreover, the chain can break at the most inopportune moment.

Failure of the damper can lead to a break in the timing chain when the engine starts

Typically, a timing chain break occurs at the moment when the crankshaft begins to rotate at maximum speed. It happens instantly. Therefore, the driver is physically unable to quickly react to the situation and turn off the engine. A broken timing chain leads to serious engine damage. First of all, the valves fail - both inlet and outlet.

Then the cylinders fail. After all this, it is almost impossible to restore the engine. Car owners in such situations usually sell the car for spare parts. Therefore, the timing chain guide is the most important part, the performance of which must be constantly monitored.

Timing chain stabilizer device for VAZ 2107

The VAZ 2107 timing chain guide is a regular plate made of high-quality carbon steel with two mounting holes.

The VAZ 2107 timing chain guide is made of high-quality carbon steel

The second element of the timing chain calming system is the hydraulic chain tensioner shoe. It is located under the timing cover next to the damper. The surface of the shoe in contact with the chain is coated with a durable polymer material.

The tensioner shoe is the second element of the chain calming system, without which the work of the tensioner is impossible

To provide access to the chain guide, you must:

  • unscrew the timing cover;
  • Slightly loosen the chain tension roller.

Without this, it will not be possible to remove the sedative.

The principle of operation of the VAZ 2107 timing chain guide

When the VAZ 2107 engine starts, the timing shaft and crankshaft begin to rotate. This does not always happen synchronously. The fact is that these shafts have toothed sprockets that are connected by a timing chain. This chain can wear out and become sagging over time. In addition, sometimes the teeth on the guide sprockets break, and the chain sag increases. As a result, when the engine starts, the timing shaft begins to rotate only after the crankshaft has already turned a third of a revolution. Due to such desynchronization, the timing chain begins to sag even more and can fly off its sprockets. To prevent this from happening, the chain calming system begins to work, consisting of a tensioner shoe and the damper itself.

The main elements of the chain calming system are the tensioner and the tensioner shoe, which work in pairs

The tensioner shoe is connected to an oil line, on the fitting of which an oil pressure sensor is installed. When the timing chain begins to sag too much, this sensor detects a sharp drop in lubricant pressure. An additional portion of oil is pumped into the oil line, under the pressure of which the tension shoe moves out of its fitting and sharply presses on the slack timing chain, preventing it from flying off the sprockets. Since the shoe presses very sharply and strongly, the chain begins to oscillate strongly under its influence, and the vibrations do not occur under the shoe, but on the opposite side of the chain. The chain damper is designed to dampen these vibrations.

The damper is just a strong metal plate on which the timing chain hits when the tension shoe is triggered. It has no moving parts. However, without a damper, the teeth on the sprockets and timing chain links will wear out much faster, which in turn can lead to serious engine damage.

Causes of damper failure

The timing chain tensioner, like any other engine part, can fail. Here are the main reasons why this happens:

  • loosening of fasteners. The chain damper operates under very dynamic alternating loads: the chain constantly hits it. As a result, the bolts on which the damper is held begin to slowly weaken, the damper begins to dangle more and more, and with the next blow of the chain, the mounting bolts simply break;

    The mounting bolts on the timing damper can become loose and break over time.

  • fatigue failure. As mentioned above, the damper plate is subjected to severe shock loads. These are ideal conditions for metal fatigue failure. At some point, a microcrack appears on the surface of the damper, which cannot be seen with the naked eye. This crack can remain stable for years, but one day, when the chain hits the damper again, it begins to spread, and the speed of its propagation in the metal exceeds the speed of sound. As a result, the damper instantly breaks down, and the VAZ 2106 engine instantly jams.

When to change the sedative

There are several signs of chain guide wear:

  • extraneous noise during engine operation, often the sound of a chain knocking on the cylinder block cover can be heard;
  • the chain slips through the drive teeth, so the engine malfunctions - its gas distribution unit is not functioning properly;
  • the engine jams due to a broken chain or frequent slipping through the drive teeth.

It is best not to bring the power unit to a complete stop, but to eliminate the worn-out spare part even at the moment the extraneous ringing appears. You can get to it if you disassemble the gas distribution mechanism - the damper is located on the reverse side, relative to the tensioner shoe.

To prevent the damper from breaking, it is necessary to regularly tighten the camshaft drive chain. If this is not done, then not only the damper may fall, but also its fastenings (2 M6 bolts of different lengths with welded nuts). Due to strong vibrations of the chain and the occurrence of resonance, the nuts can break off - which leads to severe damage to the motor.

Chain tensioner - how it works

The tensioner is installed together with the rear derailleur on bicycles with a multi-speed open transmission. Additionally, they can be installed on other types of bicycles, for example, with a planetary control system. The simple design of this device ensures a clear fixation of the bicycle chain, and also protects against flying off in case of strong pulling.

The optimal position of the tensioner rollers is parallel to the rear sprocket system, that is, the chain runs straight along it and without distortions. Otherwise, the switching system holder is bent. To align it, you need to grab and pull the entire device (switch), not just the tensioner.

Mechanism design

This is a simple plate made of high quality carbon steel. It has two mounting holes.

There is also a second design element. It is called the hydraulic tensioner shoe. It is located under the timing cover. To extend service life, the side exposed to increased mechanical stress is coated with durable polymer material.

To replace the chain guide on a VAZ, you need to remove the cover and loosen the tension roller.

Why does the damper fail?

It seems that there is nothing to break - a piece of high quality carbon metal. But it breaks, and the reasons are:

  1. Loosening of fastenings. This results in a constant change in the load on the damper. With continuous impacts, the tightening of the bolts gradually weakens, the damper becomes more loose and the fasteners break.
  2. Fatigue of the material from which the element is made. Impacts may cause microcracks that are not visible to the naked eye. For some time practically nothing happens. But with the next strong impact, the crack increases and the damper breaks.

Chain tension

Every owner of this car should know how to tension the timing chain on a VAZ 2107. To carry out the work you need to prepare:

  • key to 13;
  • 36mm wrench to rotate the crankshaft;
  • hammer.

The procedure is carried out in the following order

  1. Using a 13mm wrench, unscrew the tensioner cap nut.
  2. Using a crankshaft wrench, turn the pulley several turns.
  3. Stop the crankshaft at the moment of maximum resistance to rotation. In this position we perform tension.
  4. We tighten the cap nut.

Video: chain tension on the “classic”

Sometimes it happens that when you unscrew the nut, the tensioner does not snap off. To do this, you need to knock on the mechanism body with a hammer.

To understand whether the chain really has good tension, you must first remove the valve cover before making adjustments.

What is the purpose of installing a chain damper?

The bicycle chain is one of the main parts of the transmission, so it is so important to maintain its stable working movement.
To prevent the bicycle chain from slipping off when riding fast or jumping, install a chain guide. In the cycling community it is also referred to by such popular nicknames as “calm down”, “changeaid”. The concept of “chain guide” includes accessories that not only normalize the speed of the bicycle chain, but also elements that protect the sprockets from mechanical damage. A restrainer is not one element, but a combination of various accessories that are placed on the frame of a two-wheeler. When used together, it is possible to protect the drive sprockets and prevent the bicycle chain from slipping off.

Purchase

Prices for such devices vary greatly - from 1000 rubles. for Chinese plastic or a product from a nearby workshop, up to 100 dollars or more for professional kits with rockring and high-quality rollers.

The product market is quite narrow. There are only a few decent companies:

  • Truvativ is a brand from SRAM, the undisputed leader in quality. Officially imported into Russia by several companies;
  • Hope is a British company that relies on modern materials in the manufacture of bicycle parts;
  • Funn is also a British company, imported into the Russian Federation quite rarely, and prices are usually inflated;
  • Shimano - occupy the middle price segment.

About assembling the timing belt and installing the chain according to the marks

As mentioned above, the timing system has a marking system that allows you to correctly install the guide sprockets and timing chain after replacement.

  1. If the timing chain was changed on a carburetor “seven”, then the oil pump sprocket, which was loosened above, is tightened first. In this case, the mark on the sprocket is aligned with the protrusion on the body (and if the “seven” is injection, this point does not play a big role).
  2. The chain guide and tension shoe are returned to their place.
  3. Now the crankshaft sprocket is put in place. It also has a recessed mark, which also needs to be aligned with the protrusion on the timing case, and only after that tighten the fastening nut on the sprocket and install the cotter pin in place.
  4. After aligning the crankshaft sprocket according to the marks, a new timing chain is put on it.
  5. Now all that remains is to install the camshaft sprocket in place. The asterisk does not tighten. The timing chain is put on it. In this case, the sprocket must be turned so that the mark on it coincides with the mark on the cylinder block. If there is no match, the chain should be removed from the teeth and the sprocket should be turned in the desired direction until the marks completely coincide.
  6. When the risks coincide, it is necessary to check the coincidence of the marks on the remaining sprockets. If there is no discrepancy between the marks, you can tighten the camshaft sprocket and install a cotter pin on it.
  7. Now all that remains is to return the timing cover to its place, and then replace the previously removed radiator.

Chain: choice and proper care

For people who still remember, the sentence “choose a new chain for a bicycle” sounds somewhat wild. For some reason, the chains lasted almost longer than the bicycle itself. The answer is simple: those bicycles had only one speed, so the chain was constantly in a calm state and did not wear out as quickly as on modern bicycles. Nowadays, even the most budget iron bike is equipped with the ability to change gears, which leads to chain wear. Modern chains are undoubtedly stronger and more reliable if they are able to withstand such loads during such use.

So, it’s time to replace the chain on your own bicycle: what should you pay attention to, which chain to choose? The most popular manufacturers are KMC, Shimano and SRAM. In the lines of these manufacturers you can find chains of varying prices and different qualities.

All these chains easily replace each other and, if the cyclist has a desire, he can sort through the chains ad infinitum until he finds the one that suits him completely.

When purchasing a chain, you should pay attention to the markings: usually companies include information about the quality of the chain in the numerical designation of the model. For example, CN-HG53 will be much simpler than CN-7701

Cassette.

For adequate operation of the chain, it is important to be able to notice in time the moment when the chain already requires replacement or repair, but the rest of the transmission is still safe and sound. An excessively worn chain not only threatens driving problems, but also gradually “kills” the sprockets: in this case, you will have to change not only the chain itself, but also a rather expensive mechanism - the cassette, and sometimes the system

The most accurate way to determine chain wear should not be considered mileage (sometimes 100 km of country walks on off-road and muddy roads can pass for 1000 km of quiet city bike rides), but the length of 24 links on the chain:

  • in normal condition this figure is 304.8 mm;
  • 306.5-307.5 mm is a reason to change the chain;
  • 307.5-308 mm - indicates not only chain wear, but also problems with sprockets;
  • More than 308 mm - serious difficulties with the chain, cassette and system condition.

Another way to “by eye” find out how worn a chain is is the following: after installing the chain on a large sprocket, you should pull it lightly with your fingers and check how many teeth are visible on the chain. If you can see two teeth on the sprocket, the chain is worn out, but is still suitable for driving, and three teeth indicate that the chain is completely worn out and needs to be replaced immediately. Also, extraneous sounds from a lubricated chain often indicate its wear.

Dampener VAZ 2106: do-it-yourself replacement

In the article you will learn about the VAZ 2106 damper and the method of replacing it. The service life of this device is quite long, but sooner or later it needs to be changed - otherwise the gas distribution mechanism will not work properly. The entire replacement procedure happens quickly - it will take you longer to prepare. And to do this you will need to remove the air filter cover, the block head, and move the choke and throttle cables to the side.

A few words about the VAZ 2106 damper

The price of this device ranges from 100 to 350 rubles, you are unlikely to find more expensive. It is worth noting that this element is suitable for all VAZ models of the “classic” series - 2101-2107. Replacement of the damper occurs in two cases:

  1. If there is a knocking noise from the timing chain.
  2. If the chain has jumped over a tooth or has strong vibrations.

To carry out the work you will need a small set of tools and accessories:

  1. Open-end and spanner wrenches.
  2. Stabilizer VAZ 2106.
  3. Flat screwdrivers.
  4. Rigid wire is a small piece bent into a hook. Next we will talk about why you need it.
