Bored cylinders will burn the greatest amount of fuel in the same amount of time, thereby increasing the throttle response of the engine.
- increase the piston stroke by using a new crankshaft, which has a large eccentricity, and selecting appropriate pistons and connecting rods for it. As a rule, lightweight connecting rods in this case are installed, since weight in this case plays an important role. The new piston group allows to significantly increase efficiency and, accordingly, power. At the end of such tuning, it is advisable to install a lightweight flywheel in order to relieve the load on the crankshaft and clutch, which will certainly have a positive effect on the dynamics and acceleration of the car.

Compression ratio
- The very concept of compression ratio implies the ratio of the combustion chamber to the total volume of the cylinders. This will simultaneously significantly increase efficiency, engine power and reduce fuel consumption.
- These indicators can be achieved by installing a new camshaft with completely different geometric parameters. Thus, the new element is able to increase the volume of the combustion chamber, while the engine volume remains unchanged. Such work is best carried out together with the installation of a turbine (see below - note). However, remember that this work is not cheap.
- You also need to know that when installing such a camshaft, the octane number of the gasoline being poured must be increased, as well as improving the engine oil being poured, which has the lowest friction coefficients. When carrying out such tuning, compression units can increase to 10 units.
Throttle valve
Many owners of VAZ two-wheelers resort to engine tuning by increasing the diameter of the throttle valve. Of course, to increase the volume of the air mixture, such tuning is advisable. In stores you can find dampers with a diameter from 52 to 56 mm. However, please note that by increasing the diameter of the damper, you will also have to change the pipes. Quite often, failures occur not because of problems with volume, but because the throttle valve is clogged, in which case it needs to be cleaned.

Malfunctions and repairs
The most common malfunction that VAZ 2110 owners encounter is when the 21124 engine fails. This is expressed in unstable engine operation, interruptions in operation, increased vibration, noise and gasoline consumption. What could be the reasons for this unpleasant phenomenon and what repairs will be required on the VAZ 21124 engine.
If the engine in any VAZ 2110 car is malfunctioning, then, firstly, you need to find out the reason, diagnose the ignition, fuel supply system, gas distribution mechanism, electronics and mechanical parts (pistons and crankshaft) and repair the VAZ 124, even if you do it yourself .
- Ignition - the wires are removed from the spark plugs one by one. If the friction increases when the wire is disconnected, then the cylinder is working. If it still troits, that means the problem lies there. In this case, the spark plug and high-voltage wire are checked. The easiest way is to install new ones, and if the problem is not solved, then the diagnosis must be continued by checking the ignition module. You can also try to replace it with a working one, or test its circuit with a multimeter.
- The cause of interruptions may be poor quality fuel. In this case, you need to change it and also wash the injectors.
- The piston and valve groups are tested together. First, you can disconnect the breather hose. If white smoke comes from the breather, then the problem is hidden in the pistons, or rather in their rings. If there is no smoke, then it is necessary to measure the compression. Reduced compression usually indicates a valve failure. If compression is normal, you can try adjusting the valves. Engine malfunctions can occur due to clamped or, conversely, too loose valves. These cases threaten to carry out the most complex and expensive repairs of the VAZ 21124.
- Interruptions can also occur due to a faulty crankshaft position sensor. It is removed, marking its position, and the resistance of the sensor coil is checked. Normally, it should show a resistance of 550-750 Ohms.
The 124 engine does not cause any other special problems. Previously, there was a problem with the impact of the valves on the piston and bending of the valves and the subsequent need to repair VAZ of previous modifications. But the 124th engine is freed from this problem due to recesses in the piston bottoms.
Installation of a zero resistance filter
A zero-resistance filter, or simply “zero filter,” is mounted instead of the air filter and its housing. It is designed to reduce the resistance of incoming air into the system. Large filter throughput allows you to increase engine power by a couple of percent. Remember that the correct choice of filter and impregnation for it is the key to proper engine operation.
This tuning is one of the most affordable.
Channels and valves
- The exhaust and inlet channels are supposed to be ground , increasing the diameter at the inlet, and not changing the diameter at the outlet. We remove all irregularities and various joints that can in any way slow down the flow.
- Valves - it is better to use special lightweight or increased diameter ones. It is also expected to use the stiffest or sportiest springs, as well as lightweight valve plates.

Fuel supply
Conventional injectors are not enough to operate the engine at high speeds. Since they are constantly in operation, the working pressure in the ramp is simply not enough. In order to increase engine power, you should install the most efficient nozzles, which can increase the volume of sprayed liquid several times. Such changes work most effectively with the 4-2-1 release technology.
Turbocharging
- The most effective, widespread and most expensive type of tuning is the installation of a turbine. After all, it is known that in order to increase engine power, it is necessary to supply the largest amount of a mixture of air and fuel into the cylinders.
- However, to increase the volume of fuel, a mandatory increase in the amount of air will be required, which is what the turbine does. The exhaust gases enter the turbine impeller, then it rotates and drives the compressor, which in turn pumps air into the cylinders.
- Since the air is pumped under pressure, its quantity increases significantly, which leads to an increase in fuel combustion, which results in an increase in power.
- Remember that installing a turbine will lead to a mandatory upgrade of the cooling system (diagram of a standard cooling system here).

From the factory, cars are equipped with standard engines that have average characteristics that meet the standard and requirements of the average consumer. To improve the performance of their favorite car, improve its dynamics and increase engine power in the VAZ 2112, owners resort to thorough engine tuning. Although the history of VAZ2112 cars is not yet rich at all, compared to other VAZ models that have become classics, this car model is becoming a favorite in the hands of folk craftsmen. Currently, there are many methods for modifying VAZ 2112 engines, more than half of which can be done independently, the rest require the help of specialists.
Performance Improvement Methods
Increasing the working volume
The best modification of VAZ 2112 engines is this method, it is the most convenient, quite simple, and the most common. It allows you to increase engine torque without changing your driving style. This can be done in two ways - boring the cylinders and increasing the piston stroke, now in more detail:
- The piston stroke is increased due to the installation of a new crankshaft, which has a greater eccentricity and the selection of pistons and connecting rods for this shaft
- Connecting rods are usually selected by weight and installed mainly from lightweight options
- The piston is a key part in any engine, so replacing the piston group can significantly increase engine efficiency and power
- And at the end of the tuning we install a lightweight flywheel
- Such actions lead to a reduction in the load on the crankshaft and clutch, which speeds up the acceleration of the car and increases its dynamics.
- Slightly easier tuning of the stock VAZ 2112 engine, cylinder boring
- The method is based on the fact that engines, as a rule, all have a margin of thickness at the cylinder walls (reserve margin)
- From this we can conclude that the volume of the cylinders can be increased by boring; by grinding down the walls, we increase the volume due to them
- This will immediately increase the engine power, because the bored cylinders begin to burn a larger volume of fuel per unit of time.
- Do-it-yourself boring is not done, only on specialized equipment
- After boring, pistons and rings of repair size are installed
Increasing the compression ratio
“Compression ratio” is essentially the ratio of the total volume of a cylinder to the total volume of its combustion chamber. By increasing the compression ratio, it is possible to significantly increase the engine power and its efficiency, in addition to slightly reducing gasoline consumption. So:
- VAZ 2112 increase in engine power is achieved by installing a tuning camshaft that has different geometric parameters
- Due to the new camshaft, the volume of the combustion chamber increases, without increasing the volume of the engine itself, which has a very positive effect on its power and efficiency.
- It is more advisable to perform the VAZ 2112 engine tuning procedure by replacing the camshaft in parallel with other engine modifications, for example, combined with the installation of turbocharging
- However, it should be remembered that operating an engine with a high compression ratio independently requires the owner to use high-quality fuel and branded engine oil
- Otherwise, your engine may suddenly start to stall, its temperature may rise sharply above the permissible norm
- The compression ratio increases to 9.7 - 10
Design features
The main part of the engine, the cylinder block (catalog number 11193-1002011), also differs in size from its predecessor. It is factory painted blue. Its height, the distance from the crankshaft axis to the upper plane, became 197.1 mm, versus 194.8 mm on the 2112 model.
The dimensions of the holes for the block head mounting bolts have changed; they are from the hoist with M10×1.25 threads. The main bearing supports on the 124th engine, from the second to the fifth, are equipped with channels designed to supply oil that cools the piston during operation.
The crankshaft installed is the same as on models 21126 and 11194, with the marking 11183 cast on the sixth counterweight. Due to the crank radius of 37.8 mm, a piston stroke of 75.6 mm was provided. A toothed pulley is installed on the shaft for timing belt drive. The belt is 25.4 mm wide and has 136 teeth, parabolic in shape. Belt service life is 45,000 km.
The pulley is designed to drive additional units using a V-belt. Three types of belts are used, differing in length, depending on the equipment:
- If the drive is only for the generator, the belt length is 742 mm.
- With power steering - 1115 mm.
- With power steering and air conditioning 1125 mm.
The pulley is designed in such a way that it acts as a damper, reducing the torque loads acting on the shaft. Another function is to determine the position of the crankshaft using a sensor and a gear mounted in the damper.
The improvement affected the pistons. Their bottoms are made with valve recesses 5.53 mm deep to avoid the valves hitting the piston bottom when the timing belt breaks.
On previous VAZ 16v models without recesses or with recesses of shallower depth, in such a situation there was a risk of bending the valves, which led to expensive repairs. So, concerns and frequently arising questions about whether the valves bend on this engine have been removed.
Oil scraper and compression rings are made of steel or cast iron. The pistons and connecting rods are connected using floating pins, 22 mm in diameter, 60.5 mm in length, secured with retaining rings. The pins and connecting rods are borrowed from the VAZ 2110 modification.
The block head for the 16 valve LADA 21124 engine has an enlarged docking area for the intake manifold flange. Both camshafts for the exhaust and intake valves, as well as the valves themselves, springs, and hydraulic compensators have also been preserved from the previous modification of the engine.
In order to avoid confusion, the shafts are marked with a digital code. If it ends at 14, then this is the exhaust valve shaft, if at 15, then this is the intake shaft.
Another difference is that there is a raw strip on the intake shaft, next to the first pushrod. By adding hydraulic compensators to the design, the manufacturer eliminated the need to maintain valves in terms of adjustment. But, they are very sensitive to the cleanliness and quality of the lubricant. Low-quality oil will quickly damage parts and must be replaced; such repairs are not provided for the VAZ 124.
The spring-valve group is similar to model 2112. Valves with one spring and rods with a diameter of 7 mm (on eight-valve heads their diameter is 8 mm). Toothed pulleys with marks for setting the valve timing are installed on the camshafts. Compared to model 2112, the marks are shifted relative to each other by 2°.
Just like the shafts, the pulleys have differences in design and markings - on the inlet, a strip is welded on the back side, on the outlet it is missing. Both pulleys have markings in the form of circles on the hub.
Correct belt tension is done using support and tension rollers with flanges (to eliminate the possibility of slipping).
The cylinder head gasket is made from asbestos-free material. The holes for the cylinders are made with metal edging.
The intake manifold is combined with the receiver and is made of plastic.
For the first time in cars of the VAZ 2110 family, a catalytic converter was installed, combined with an exhaust manifold. Depending on what EURO 4 or 5 requirements the 124 motor is designed for, a different type of collector is installed.
The design of the fuel rail was updated and it began to be made from stainless steel. The drain line was removed from the fuel system; instead, a bypass valve was installed on the pump to relieve excess pressure. To supply fuel directly to the cylinders, nozzles manufactured by Bosch and Siemens were used.
The ignition coils were installed on spark plugs, each spark plug had its own individual coil, with additional fixation to the valve cover. With this method, high-voltage wires were no longer needed, and the ignition control began to be carried out by Bosch M7.9.7 or Russian January 7.2 control units, intended for EURO-4 and 3.
Gasoline supply
I think there is no need to explain the importance of maintaining a stable, constant gasoline pressure in the injector rail:
- During normal city driving, the standard fuel regulator is sufficient at high speeds, but a situation arises that with the injectors constantly open, it leads to a general decrease in pressure in the rail
- As a result, the fuel supply decreases, poor atomization results, and engine malfunction
- Therefore, boosting the engine requires increasing the pressure by 0.5 - 1 atmosphere, it all depends on the degree of boosting the engine
- Naturally, it will be necessary to adjust the injection program to ensure the correct mixture composition
- Today, in the latest (so-called “transitional”) models, as well as new 1.6-liter engines, a drainless system is used; the RTD is located in the tank with the fuel pump assembly and creates a higher pressure of 3.8 Atmospheres
Injectors
A natural process when, when boosting the engine, a situation often arises that the performance (amount of fuel supplied) is simply not enough:
- In this case, you will need to replace the nozzles, install more efficient ones, or install a second row of nozzles
- Option two is quite difficult and time-consuming, and it is not always possible to implement it even in a standard block.
- Therefore, it is easier to install more efficient injectors, having a productivity from +15% to +50% (and it is undesirable to use publicly available injectors used on GAZ cars; apart from high productivity, they have no more advantages)
- The disadvantages are the speed and non-linear characteristic at the beginning of its range, where a regular car has XX
- In addition, as a rule, 4-2-1 “spiders” are installed on souped-up cars, which work well in a wide speed range
- Spiders of the 4-1 system did not take root in civilian tuning due to the narrow range of their effective operation
- And the principle of operation of the exhaust is based on the vacuum created in front of the closed exhaust valve, this contributes to improved purging of the cylinder
