Engine mounts on VAZ 2109 cars are responsible for reducing and eliminating vibrations emanating from engine operation and transmitted to the car body.

Every motorist should be able to replace them with his own hands. There is nothing complicated in working with supports, but competent repairs can significantly extend the life of the car and get rid of quickly annoying vibrations and noise.

If we talk about the VAZ 2114 model, then there are three supports, two of which are intended directly for the gearbox, and another one for the engine itself.

The main purpose of pillows is to reduce vibrations.

When the car drives, serious vibrations occur, which are transmitted to the body from the power unit. To ensure the necessary level of comfort while driving and not to be distracted by extraneous noise or shaking, special supports are mounted on the car. If you remove them, driving a VAZ 2114 can be compared to riding an old wooden cart.

Causes of malfunctions

The most important problem that pillows face is the loss of elasticity of the material. This is due to the fact that the supports are made of rubber. Over time and with use, these elements lose their original characteristics. Various factors accelerate the wear process of bearings:

  • Regular exercise;
  • Long service life;
  • Cold;
  • Heat;
  • Temperature changes, etc.

If elasticity decreases, this entails the formation of cracks and delamination of the material.

Replacement is purely a matter of time. But the procedure for changing the front and all other pillows should be carried out on time. If you drive for a long time with worn out bearings, this will result in a negative impact on engine performance. Then the repair will cost much more than the cost of new supports.

The main advice is to periodically check the condition of the supports for wear. If you detect a fault in a timely manner, you can replace it yourself and significantly save on car repairs.

What is this item? An engine mount is a gasket between body elements and the power unit. This is installed on all cars without exception. On Soviet Zhiguli cars, the cushion was a durable piece of rubber with fasteners on both sides. On more modern “nines” and “eights” (and subsequently all VAZs with a front-wheel drive layout) full-fledged rubber-metal supports were installed.

So, the power unit was mounted on four pillows. Two of them are on the gearbox, and the rest are on the engine. To avoid unnecessary loads, the box and motor are rigidly fixed. Any distortion leads to a change in the geometry of the input shaft. As a result, all the vibration is strongly transmitted to the gearbox lever and the transmission itself.

Where are the pillows? This element is installed on the engine from several sides:

  • Front cushion. Attached to the front beam of the power unit.
  • Back cushion. Installed to the front subframe. Located in the bottom area.
  • Right support. It is located on top, near the front side member of the body.

Replacement

We have already noted that there are a total of three supports on the VAZ 2114. But it’s not uncommon for car owners to decide to install a fourth—an additional airbag. It serves to connect the crankcase and transverse the front suspension. This reduces wear and vibration and increases the level of comfort. But keep in mind that with such a modification you will have to look for a new place for the ignition module.

Now let's talk in more detail about the three standard pillows. Replacement of each of them is carried out in a certain sequence and according to the appropriate algorithm.

Front

To change the front engine mount, follow the instructions.

  1. Drive the car into a pit with a flat surface. Stop the wheels, turn on the handbrake, and put the transmission in first gear. This is a guarantee that the car will not roll away unexpectedly for you.
  2. Remove the crankcase protection and give yourself access to the front airbag.
  3. If the car has been in service for more than a year, and you haven’t touched the supports for a long time, then be sure to treat all fasteners with WD40 or another effective “fighter” against rust.
  4. Using a jack, you need to slightly raise the power unit. In this case, be sure to use a wooden beam as a spacer so as not to damage the motor. Keep an eye on the radiator and fan while lifting the engine. They should not break, otherwise you will not avoid serious expenses.
  5. There is a rather long bolt on the body cross member. It secures the support and bracket. It needs to be unscrewed.
  6. Now the bolts that connect the motor block and the pillow are unscrewed.
  7. All that remains is to remove the damaged element and replace it with a new one.
  8. Assembly is performed strictly in reverse order.

Design and technological features

Since in the “fourteenth” model the entire load from the engine falls on the front suspension, accordingly, the chassis is made of materials with an increased margin of safety, and its design must strictly comply with established standards. Durable rubber mounts of the VAZ-2114 engine are used as a damper for vibrations of the power unit under various loads.

Since high demands are placed on this part, it is extremely important to purchase only original and certified supports, since only they are suitable for use in our conditions.

In the design of the front part of the car frame and its suspension, the engine mount is one of the important elements, while its independent replacement is quite within the capabilities of a car owner who has even the most minimal concepts in plumbing.

The main thing in the repair process is to complete the entire technological sequence of actions, then the installed part will serve for a long period of time.

When replacement is necessary

Since the pillow has rubber inserts, it loses its elasticity over time. This becomes noticeable even in the cabin, as an unpleasant vibration appears. The replacement period for a part varies, depending on weather conditions and sudden temperature changes. It is these factors that affect the structure of rubber: it becomes harder.

If you do not replace the cushion at this stage, then in the future the part will begin to deteriorate, which can lead to more serious damage to the engine mount. If while driving you hear a knocking noise under the hood and notice increased vibration, you should conduct a visual inspection and, if defects are found, begin preparing for repairs.

How to change supports

To replace, you will need to purchase front, left and rear airbags. Experts advise replacing the entire set during repairs, since after replacing one part, another one may break after a while. To replace the pillows we will need:

  • 2 good jacks;
  • metalworking tools;
  • scrap;
  • steel rope;
  • glue.

Replacing the front airbag

The repair of each support has its own characteristics. Replacing the front airbag is carried out as follows:

  1. Put the car in 1st gear or the handbrake so that it does not move.
  2. To gain access to the support, remove the upper engine protection.
  3. Raise the engine with a jack. To avoid damaging its lower part or other elements, place a wooden board underneath.
  4. When we have freed the support from the load, we can unscrew the bolt that connects it to the bracket.
  5. We unscrew the bolts connecting the pillow to the motor.

Replacing the rear cushion

Here we will need a steel cable to make it more convenient to work with fasteners.

  1. We hook up the gearbox with a cable and install a jack under it.
  2. Slightly press out the bolt connecting the gearbox to the support.
  3. Unscrew the nuts securing the support to the body.

  5. We replace and reassemble in reverse order.

When replacing the side airbag, you will need to perform the same steps. If you have a large starter installed, it will need to be removed to get to the bolt. It is better to coat rubber products with a special protective substance - this will ensure a long service life of the parts. After completing the repair, do not forget to test the car. If during movement the knocking stops and the vibration becomes almost unnoticeable, then everything was done correctly.

Signs of wear

Due to the presence of rubber inserts, the cushion loses elasticity during operation and can no longer dampen vibration, which is noticeably felt in the car interior.

Other signs of wear include:

  • the appearance of a metallic sound under the hood;
  • a periodically appearing sound reminiscent of a clock ticking;
  • various damages that can be detected visually, such as cracks in the cushions.

Engine mounts are one of the most loaded parts in a car; they experience loads even if the car is stationary. Therefore, it is very important to pay attention to signs of wear and respond to malfunctions in a timely manner so that you do not have to later change the engine mount or repair the body.

Experts advise purchasing pillows only from a trusted manufacturer that provides a guarantee on the product. A low-quality part, firstly, will not cope with its task properly, and secondly, it will very quickly become unusable.

Newer VAZs, despite criticism, are still evolving compared to their predecessors. Thus, in newer models, instead of a standard engine mount, the manufacturer used a so-called engine mount, the appearance of which made it possible to significantly increase the level of comfort in domestically produced cars.

The VAZ 2114 engine mounts act as shock absorbers (dampers) that dampen vibrations coming from the power unit. Such pillows will not allow vibrations to transfer to the body, and then into the interior of the car, which makes the ride more comfortable and enjoyable. In addition, the airbags soften the impacts coming from the wheels when driving through areas with poor road surfaces. Engine mounts are practically the same silent blocks that are used in the design of the chassis.

There are three pillows on the “fourteenths”:

  1. The front (also called the bottom) connects the crankcase to the beam;
  2. Right (or side - located between the motor and the spar);
  3. Rear – connects the box and the body.

Engine mounts are constantly under heavy load, even when the car is just standing still, which cannot but affect their condition. Over time, engine mounts, made of durable rubber, become unusable and require replacement, which is indicated to the car owner by characteristic signs.

Replacing engine mount VAZ 2114

Replacement of the front support is carried out in the following sequence:

  1. The car should be placed on a flat surface and put on the handbrake.
  2. Unscrew all the bolts to dismantle the VAZ 2114 engine mount protection.
  3. If there is rust on the bolts, it is better to treat them with a special WD-40 agent to protect them from corrosion.
  4. Very carefully, so as not to damage anything, place a jack under the car and lift the engine.

Important: a spacer, for example a wooden block, must be installed between the jack and the engine.

Replacing the left engine mount of a VAZ 2114 is done in the same way as the right one, only you will also need a cable during the work. With its help, you need to pick up the gearbox and place a jack under it. If the car has a stator, it should be removed. Then remove the bolt connecting the support and bracket. Take out the old pillow, install a new one in its place and reassemble in reverse order.

When all work is completed, be sure to check the correct installation of new parts and the reliability of the connections. After a visual check, you should start the car and drive on an uneven surface. If there are no noises, then everything has been done correctly and you can safely operate the machine.
