New means of protecting cars from theft are constantly emerging. The cost of modern vehicles is high, so owners try to install high-quality security systems, for example, multilock on automatic transmissions. The device blocks the gearbox, making it impossible to drive in the event of unauthorized entry into the car.

What is multiloc?
An automobile Multilock at a gearbox is a mechanical device that allows you to block the operation of the gearbox in a certain position. In the case of an automatic transmission, this is the parking mode. While it is activated, driving the vehicle will be impossible. The main component of such an anti-theft system for an automatic transmission is a pin installed in a special bracket.
To unlock the operation of the device, a keyhole is used, which is located:
- to the left of the center console in the car interior;
- to the right of the torpedo;
- between the front seats;
- in the area of the steering column.
The automatic transmission protection system is controlled using a special key. To transmit force between the cylinder and the locking element, a mechanism is used to change the direction of movement.
Design and principle of operation
Regardless of the model, the blocker has the following device:
- 1 — interactive pin of the rotor mechanism;
- 2 — rotor housing;
- 3 - internal component of the double pin;
- 4 - housing of a cylindrical device;
- 5 - external component of the double pin;
- 6 - interactive key component;
- 7 — control key identifier.
Multilock structural elements
The pin with which the device is equipped is inserted into the fixation location, which prevents movement of the gearbox selector. The mechanism is secured using a key. Similarly, you can independently unlock the lock in your car by removing the pin.
How to change gearbox blockers
The very first gearbox locks began to be supplied to the Russian market in the early 90s. These were locks with a “shackle” that secured the gearshift lever. Then came the time of pin locks, which turned out to be more effective and easier to install on an automatic transmission. It so happened that any blocker is called Multilok.

Types of multilocks
Devices that allow you to block the operation of the transmission are divided into types:
- Pin mechanisms. The main locking component of the design is a pin made of high-strength steel. Such a device is installed in a special technological hole on the gearbox. Thanks to this, the gearshift lever is fixed in a certain position.
- Pinless mechanisms. The main difference is that the locking component is initially installed in the lock.
- Universal models. Installation of such multilocks is not possible on all car models. Installation may not be possible due to the design of the transmission.
- Individual models. This blocker only works on a specific vehicle, since it was originally produced for a specific model.
- Arc. This type of device is considered the simplest in terms of device. Its installation does not affect the structural components of the vehicle, since the locks are secured externally, that is, in the car interior.
- Devices for installation under the hood. This type of mechanism is the most advanced and reliable among the others (if its installation is carried out correctly). The gearbox locking procedure is carried out in the engine compartment, directly on the automatic transmission. If an attacker can get into the car and disconnect the cable with the gearbox control rod, then unlocking the unit will be impossible. The use of such devices is relevant together with blocking devices in the engine compartment.

Types and principles of operation
There are different types of multilock systems. Any of these devices works according to its own principle and protects the vehicle from theft.
Types of automatic transmission mul-t-lock:
- arc blockers for automatic machines. These are the simplest types of multilocks. They do not completely protect the car from theft, since they only block the control lever, but not the rocker itself. Such automatic transmission multilocks are installed by those who do not know the structure of the machine and want to independently set up an anti-theft system. Another advantage of such blocks is their low cost;
- mechanical multilocks: pin and without pin;
- multilocks with “Interactive” cylinder;
- universal multilocks, electronic, engine compartment multilocks.
This protection system does not require lubrication. Therefore, both in the wet season and in the dry, the blocker will work properly. All keys and locks are made of durable alloys.
Multilock element name | Metal or alloy from which components are made | What gives |
Multilock key and lock pins | Nickel and silver alloy | Resistance to core wear, excellent key sliding in the keyhole |
Multiloc cylinder | Beryllium bronze | Resistance to acids, drilling |
Next we will talk about each type of multiloc automatic transmission.
Pin and pinless multilock gearboxes
The simplest mule-t-locks are mechanical multilock mechanisms. The principle of pin mechanisms was touched upon in the block above. The anti-theft system is activated by the key and unlocked in the same way.

A pinless device differs from the first one in that it does not have a pin that must be constantly inserted and removed from the hole. The pinless multilock is permanently attached to the automatic transmission: it is built into it. Locking and unlocking occurs by turning the key.
Attention! The pins for multilocks are made of high-strength steel. It cannot be melted, cut or exposed to chemicals.
Multiloc equipped with an interactive cylinder
Mutilock "Interactive" consists of a cylinder and a movable pin in the core. A special card is sold along with the multilock, which prevents the creation of a duplicate without it. Therefore, it is not possible to open such multilocks at all.
And you can buy a key only in specialized workshops or manufacturing companies.
Positive aspects of the multilock automatic transmission "Interactive":
- increased protection system;
- low cost of multilock for automatic transmission;
- resistance to chemical influences;
- inability to create a duplicate multilock key.
Universal multilocs
Universal anti-theft multilocks are installed on the boxes of any car. They cannot be installed on those that provide a different protection system or have a different design.
There are also individual locks. They are produced for a special modification of the car. And they cannot be installed on any other one.
Engine compartments also belong to the universal type of multilock automatic transmission. They are installed and block automatic transmission shifting under the hood. Experts recommend installing such multilocks together with hood locks. Since everything will be under it, and inside the cabin there is only a hole for the key.

Adjustment, replacement and why a brake band is needed in an automatic transmission
If a car thief gets into the car, he won't be able to do anything. But compared to the arc mechanism of the anti-theft system, this one has a complex installation. Therefore, it is better to install it at specialized service stations. You can install it yourself only when the owner of the car is an experienced mechanic.
Advantages and disadvantages
Multilock on automatic transmission has the following advantages:
- The process of disabling the lock is carried out without damaging the structural components of the gearbox.
- Individual devices are difficult to hack even for a professional thief. As a result of the fact that such mechanisms are developed for a specific car model, they have a unique design.
- Unlocking keys are characterized by increased resistance to duplication.
- Structural elements of bollards that are susceptible to mechanical action are always made from high-strength metals. Thanks to this, the likelihood of them being damaged during hacking is minimal.
- According to consumer reviews, such mechanisms usually function without failure.
Disadvantages typical for certain types of blockers:
- The arc mechanisms only secure the transmission selector, but they do not block the gearbox linkage. If an attacker disables this structural element, he will be able to change gears, even if the lever is blocked.
- The criminal will be able to get to the keyhole of the arc device from any direction. This will allow him to pick the lock.
- Arc-type devices are characterized by large sizes. The mechanism located in the cabin negatively affects its overall aesthetics.
User Master12Volt talked about why you should not install a transmission lock on your car.
Hacking using the bumping method
A cylinder lock with a flat key contains pins in its design and is easily broken using a bumper. This method consists of the following: the attacker installs a “blank” into the larva and taps it with a hammer. At a certain moment after the impact, the “workpiece” is quickly turned.
Hacking a pin lock using bumping
Multilock locks of the “classic” series are also pin locks, although their design looks non-standard. How such a lock is opened is shown in the video.
When planning to perform a hack, you need to make a suitable “blank” (blank) without errors. Probably, for mul t lock Classic locks, the blanks are made from ordinary keys. Now check out what the blank for the Interactive lock looks like.
Bumping of Multilock Interactive locks
In addition to the shape of the blade, here you will have to correctly select the rigidity of the rod installed between the disks. In reality, not everyone is able to open the multilock Interactive larva. We can only talk about the probability of hacking - it does not exceed 50%.
Multilock locks cannot be rolled or drilled. This is their advantage over other mechanisms with pins.
How to install Multilock on an automatic transmission yourself?
Instructions for installing a multiloc on an automatic transmission:
- At the first stage, it is necessary to provide full access to the gearbox control mechanism. To complete the task, the center console in the car is dismantled. This procedure is done differently on each individual vehicle model. When dismantling the console, it is necessary to unscrew all the fasteners and disconnect the connectors from the instrument panel so as not to damage the wires.
- Then you need to unscrew the gearbox control selector.
- The handbrake lever must be raised. It is necessary to remove the plastic trim on the center console tunnel located under the parking brake.
- Remove the screws that secure the plastic trim around the handbrake lever.
- Dismantle all parts of the center console. Removal of the left, right and other components is carried out in a certain order.
- Then the gear lever must be switched to parking mode.
- Unscrew the fasteners located to the left or right of the gear shift knob. Their location depends on the car model.
- Using a cutter, you need to make a small hole, the diameter of which should correspond to the size of the keyhole. Markings are made on the plastic in advance using a marker or pencil.
- Install the lock product. Fixation of the device in the seat is carried out using shear bolts, which are included in the package. Thanks to the use of such fastening elements, the likelihood of dismantling the lock is minimized.
- After completing the installation, it is necessary to diagnose the correct functioning of the lock and gear lever. If everything works correctly, then you can remove the heads of the shear bolts.
- Then you should find the standard rod nut and replace it with the part included in the package.
- Install the needle template on the device cylinder.
- Reinstall the part of the center console where the hole for the lock was made.
The “mos-olimp” channel, using the example of a Kia Rio car, showed the procedure for installing a multilock anti-theft device.
Locations for installation of larvae
When choosing a location for installing a lock, they take into account not only the convenience of its placement for the owner, but also the likelihood of detection of the system by criminals.
The most common fastening options are:
- Near the dashboard. Standard systems are built into the console itself.
- On the side of the selector lever. The cylinder will be located under the gear shift knob.
- Under the driver's or passenger's seat, or between the seats.
- Other places. The multilock can be located far from the automatic transmission, but this installation option will require large financial costs. However, previous installation options are checked by hijackers first.
The location of the lock will depend on the type of automatic transmission, vehicle design, and engine type.
