VAZ 2114 cigarette lighter does not work - how to remove, replacement, repair

Before we look at the main topic - how to remove the cigarette lighter of a VAZ 2114, you should first find out - what is a cigarette lighter, where is it located and how to use it?

A car cigarette lighter is a special electrical device, usually located on the front panel of the car and used for lighting cigarettes (hence, as you might guess, the name), as well as connecting various electrical appliances and tools (more precisely, they are connected to the cigarette lighter socket, and not into the cigarette lighter itself, which is only a removable part. However, in most cases, both parts of this device are called the same...)

Cigarette lighter VAZ 2114

Inside the connector of this device there are two contacts, which, in turn, are connected by wires to the on-board network.

The removable part, which serves for lighting the cigarette, is also designed quite simply - it contains bimetallic contacts and a conductive spiral, which heats up when connected to the network (the vast majority of cigarette lighters also have a button that turns the heating process on and off, which protects the device from quickly burning out (in case the heating was constant...)

It should be noted right away that in addition to its main purpose, a huge number of different equipment can be connected to the cigarette lighter socket (for this it must have a suitable connector).

Among them:

  • chargers for mobile phones;
  • compressors for tire inflation;
  • car vacuum cleaners;
  • mini refrigerators;
  • audio recorders;
  • measuring instruments, and much more.

Thus, the cigarette lighter is a fairly universal and necessary device inside the car, which is why it is so important that it is in good condition.

Causes of cigarette lighter failure

Reasons for failure:

  • Fuse blown; Most often this happens due to devices with a high charge. The fuse is not able to cope with the load, because it also has its own voltage limit. Every motorist, if he uses larger devices, must have a battery with him.
  • Use of the socket for purposes other than its intended purpose; Gadgets that are not intended for the cigarette lighter are used. It can only charge phones, tablets and navigators. Heavier devices are beyond his strength.
  • Burnout of the socket. Non-standard plugs are inserted into its connector, or they dangle freely.
  • Burnt out backlight; If the device is used frequently, its spiral burns out; you can replace the cigarette lighter head. However, if this scheme does not work, you should look for a problem in the electrical network. Most often, the spiral burns out due to the driver’s dishonesty and its use for other purposes, since not all types of gadgets are suitable for the cigarette lighter.

Checking for damage

To check for a cigarette lighter malfunction, we will need:

  1. Two screwdrivers (one Phillips, one slotted);
  2. Soldering iron;
  3. Two tweezers (one curved, the other straight);
  4. Toaster for cars;
  5. Pliers.

Video instruction

The connection is carried out in the same way for all models of the VAZ family: 2110, 2111, 2112 or 21124. If the cigarette lighter does not work, then before removing it and proceeding with dismantling, you need to buy a new part.
There are many options on the market. The main factor when choosing a cigarette lighter is the cost of the element. A price that is too low indicates that low-quality materials were used in production. When heated, they may be damaged, and the cigarette lighter itself may not work correctly. Short elements are sold according to European standards. This part will not be suitable for older models - you will have to change the socket itself, additionally purchasing a Europanel.

The video will tell you how to choose a device for a VAZ 2112.

Where is the cigarette lighter fuse located?

It is on the four that the fuse is located in the mounting block located in the engine compartment. You can see it when you open the hood. The block is in the right corner.

When is replacement not needed?

In some situations, the cigarette lighter may not please the owner due to its lack of functionality. For now, this is not a reason to be inclined to replace it. First, it is advisable to check the serviceability of the fuse. It would also be a good idea to make sure there is stable contact with the ignition switch. The indicated “bottlenecks” should be carefully checked, and then a verdict about a malfunction of the cigarette lighter socket should be made. In most cases, the problem can be solved by correcting the specified defects. And then you won’t have to figure out how to remove the cigarette lighter.

Common cigarette lighter malfunctions

Among the most common cigarette lighter malfunctions you can see the following breakdowns and defects:

  1. Blown fuse element. Let us remind you that the mounting block with inserts is located under the panel in the cabin. We are interested in the component labeled “F20”.
  2. Broken filament of the power element.
  3. Progressive corrosion on the socket contacts, as a result of which they do not “show” sufficient electrical conductivity.

How to remove the cigarette lighter of a VAZ 2115 yourself

The design of the device on later AvtoVAZ models is not fundamentally different from its predecessor. Therefore, you can remove the cigarette lighter for modification 2115 in the same way as for 2114.

  1. After removing the negative terminal, remove the left plastic cover near the driver’s feet.
  2. Disconnect the cigarette lighter contact blocks.
  3. Remove the ashtray light bulb.
  4. Disconnect the light filter.
  5. We remove the old element from the center console by prying it off with a screwdriver.
  6. We install the new part and begin assembly.
  7. We mount the backlight ring.
  8. We install the new car cigarette lighter in the seat.
  9. We install the ashtray light bulb.
  10. We connect power via a three-pin connector.
  11. We tighten the screws that hold the facing plastic near the legs.
  12. Connect the power and check that the device is working correctly.

Cigarette lighter repair

Fuse

The fuse we need can be designated F4 or F7. Its current strength is 20 amperes. To find it, open the hood of the four and find the black box, where the part we need is located. We extract it and test it using a tester. If it gives a signal that the fuse is working, we put it back. Otherwise, you will only have to change it (you can only change it with the same voltage, otherwise it simply will not cope with its role).

Bulb

Once a light bulb burns out, it will no longer be possible to repair it. All that remains is to change.

Radio tape recorder

To make the task easier, car enthusiasts often connect the power of the radio to the cigarette lighter contacts. By their actions, they lead to the inoperability of the radio and blown fuse. In this case, you will have to call a specialist, since it will be difficult to solve the problem on your own.

Button stuck

Sometimes the key stops working and nothing happens when pressed. There are three solutions. Try removing the non-functioning part, restoring the contacts, or replacing the button completely.

Open circuit

Each cigarette lighter has its own fuse, that is, a tin wire. If the cigarette lighter overheats, it may break the contacts and melt. To understand whether the AP is working or not, use a tester and find the location of the wire break. It will be extremely difficult for an inexperienced car enthusiast to find a break and troubleshoot problems, so it is better to call a specialist or a more experienced driver.

Semiconductor

Often the cigarette lighter semiconductor fails. There are times when, if a part malfunctions, it will be enough to repair it. We simply remove the semiconductor and reassemble the device. We check the functionality of the cigarette lighter.

Oxidation contacts

With prolonged use, oxidation and rust appear on the contacts. This can be seen with the naked eye. Due to the lack of a tight connection, connected electrical appliances may burn out. Remove the cigarette lighter and clean the contacts with a file.

Wiring short circuit

Short circuits in the wiring can be prevented, but only by replacing the wiring itself.

Replacing the cigarette lighter in Kalina

Replacing the cigarette lighter is identical for both generations of Lada Kalina. Using a similar algorithm, the cigarette lighter on Grant and Priora models is replaced.

How to remove the cigarette lighter? We proceed in the following sequence:

  1. After opening the hood, disconnect the “negative” terminal from the battery, thereby de-energizing the vehicle’s on-board network.
  2. Inside, unscrew the three screws that hold the protective panel of the parking brake limit switch. We also unscrew the rear screw and side fasteners.
  3. We remove the protective cover from the gear selector lever, and then remove the protective cover of the tunnel.
  4. Now you can get to the cigarette lighter socket. We disconnect the connector with cables from it.
  5. We see special latches that we gently press to release, which allows you to remove the cigarette lighter.
  6. Having replaced the old socket with a new product, we assemble the unit using the reverse algorithm.

Cigarette lighter replacement is complete.

How to connect the device to a cigarette lighter without a plug

Some owners decide to abandon the device itself and prefer to install other devices directly. To connect the device directly without a plug you will need:

  • blowtorch, solder;
  • screwdriver.

Procedure.

  1. We dismantle the car cigarette lighter, gaining access to the cables.
  2. We connect the wires of the installed device, observing the polarity.
  3. We carry out the assembly.

Connection diagram.

  1. A constant minus. Comes to the car body.
  2. A constant plus. Connects through a fuse to the battery.
  3. Plus, coming up to the backlight bulb.

Cigarette lighter not from ignition

There is a way to connect directly to the car battery. This scheme has advantages: if you connect the cigarette lighter directly to the battery, you can avoid interfering with the wiring itself and the fuse. The work will take less time; the positive cables should be led directly to the battery, and the negative cables should be attached to the car body.

It is also important to remember that you need to select the right spare parts. Initially, this concerns the wires. Each square millimeter of cross-section is designed for 5-10 amperes of current. Should be taken with reserve. A cross-section of 3–5 mm is quite sufficient to transmit the required voltage. Otherwise, the wires may burn and the fuse will trip. This will result in a risk of short circuit. The circuit should be routed through an additional fuse with a rating specified by the manufacturer.

Design and operation

The cigarette lighter in a car consists of a chrome-plated metal body, a heating element with a coil of high resistivity material (nichrome or similar), a plastic push-button handle, and a coil spring inside the housing. The cigarette lighter socket is a steel cup with a bimetallic heater retainer on the end wall of the housing inside. The common wire of the car's electrical equipment (ground) is connected to the body of the cigarette lighter socket, and the power (+) is connected to the heater retainer. To illuminate the cigarette lighter socket in low light conditions, a light guide made of transparent greenish plastic is installed on the body, onto which a socket with a small light bulb is attached. One of its contacts is connected to the socket body, and the other to the wire that supplies power to the instrument lighting.

The cigarette lighter works as follows. One end of the heater spiral inserted into the socket is in contact with ground through the cigarette lighter body. When you press the handle-button, the heater is fixed with a bimetallic latch, to which at this moment the other end of the spiral is connected. The current flowing through the nichrome wire heats it up. This also heats up the bimetallic clamp, which, when a certain temperature is reached, straightens and ceases to hold the heater. Then the cigarette lighter button, under the action of a spring, breaks the electrical circuit of the heater with a characteristic click and jumps out.

Electrical appliance protection

The electrical wiring is protected from a short circuit in the cigarette lighter by a fuse link in the fuse box. It is denoted by CIG, cigar, or a pictogram depicting a smoking cigarette. The rating of this fuse is most often 15 A.

The device is protected from fire by a low-melting metal washer installed under the nut securing the power terminal. The principle of operation of this protection is as follows. When the nichrome spiral is overheated for a long time, the end of the socket body heats up to the melting point of the protective washer. Melting, the washer flows down and connects the power terminal to the body of the device connected to the common wire of the electrical equipment. As a result of this short circuit, the fuse-link burns out, the cigarette lighter is de-energized, and heating stops.

Common reasons for refusal

The reason why your cigarette lighter is not working may be due to the following faults:

  • The fuse has blown.
  • Broken filament coil.
  • Fire protection activated. With this malfunction, the new fuse fails during installation. Triggering of fire protection often occurs due to accidental pressing and prolonged holding of the cigarette lighter button. What can happen, for example, when you try to reach an object that has fallen on the floor and rolled under the seat.
  • Corrosion of power terminals and cigarette lighter ground.

Frequent problems and ways to solve them

Before changing the cigarette lighter, you should inspect other common breakdown areas. It may be possible to repair the part without replacing or dismantling it.

Frequent problems include:

  1. Blown fuse. To check this element, you need to connect a standard 12-volt lamp to the socket, and then turn the ignition key. If the lamp does not light, the fuse has blown. It needs to be removed and replaced. You need to get to the block under the front panel and remove the non-working element.
  2. Loose or oxidized contacts. It is necessary to check the connectors of the VAZ car cigarette lighter for the presence of rust, tighten them for tight contact.
  3. Fallen wires. There is an age issue that should also be taken into account. To eliminate this, you should solder them to their seats.
  4. Burnt out spiral. Treated by dismantling and installing a new nest. To extend the lifespan, it is advisable not to connect devices with high current strength, such as a compressor for inflating tires.

Maybe the fuse has blown?

Before removing and replacing the VAZ 2110 cigarette lighter, you should check the serviceability of the protective element. This is a fairly common failure. The car circuit in this area is protected by a 25 ampere fuse. This means that devices with a total power of more than 300 W (12 volts * 25 amperes = 300 watts) cannot be connected to the socket.

Otherwise, the fuse on the VAZ 2110 will blow out. A hint that it was he who “gave up” is the failure of the heater fan. If the device does not work, the fuse should be replaced. The location of the mounting block is to the left of the steering column, behind the decorative panel trim.

To make it easier to pull out the fuse, you should use tweezers. It is necessary to change the part with index F-18. The fuse rating is 25 amperes. It is prohibited to install parts designed to carry high current. An unsuitable fuse may result in a short circuit, damage to wiring cables, or fire.

Location of fuses on the diagram for VAZ 2110

The main unit is located behind a protective cover that protects it from moisture, dust and dirt. Location: near the left foot at the bottom of the dashboard. The main fuses and fusible links of the car are concentrated here. The console controls most of the car's electrical equipment.

There are also auxiliary blocks - one is located in the niche of the gearbox housing and contains mainly protective relays. It can be found behind the plastic cover on the left side of the front passenger footwell.

Which fuse is responsible for the cigarette lighter?

The car circuit has a number of fusible links responsible for protecting the on-board circuits. Insert F18 is responsible for the cigarette lighter device. The fuse has a rated limit of 25 Amps. It is quite easy to find the part in the main fuse box. She is located in the bottom row, third from the right.

Fuse blown

When such a breakdown occurs, the entire system stops working. Any manipulations of the car enthusiast remain without reaction or response. If the insert burns out, check the lines and contacts for short circuits. Only after eliminating the breakdown can you change the VAZ 2110 fuse.

Replacing the fuse

To change a burnt-out element, follow a simple procedure:

  • find the required insert;
  • carefully remove the damaged part from the socket;
  • inspect the nest for damage or burns;
  • insert the new fuse into the seat.

Important! It is strictly not recommended to pull out the fuse by swinging it - this can damage the socket or tear off the thin leg, which will cause even greater damage. For replacement, special forceps or tweezers are used.
