Almost all new cars are equipped with immobilizers. These electronic devices make it possible to prevent the theft of a vehicle by disabling the “vital” systems of the car. As soon as the attacker gets into the car, he will try to start the engine and drive away. The immobilizer will either not allow this to be done at all, or the thief will be able to drive away several hundred meters, after which the fuel supply will stop and the engine will stall.
Such immobilizers can be contact or non-contact. The former have already ceased to be produced, while the latter are very popular among car owners. However, sometimes situations arise when a car enthusiast wonders how to disable the immobilizer on a VAZ 2112 or another brand. The fact is that in the brainchild of the domestic automobile industry, problems related to electronics and various devices often occur. Let's look at the main reasons for disabling the immobilizer.
Dialogue between immobilizer and injection computer
For APS units, as well as for other standard immobilizers, communication with the injection control unit is simple. At the moment of “training” of the immobilizer, when key codes are written in its memory, the code of the device block itself is simultaneously written in the memory of the injection ECU. After the training procedure, the immobilizer will “accept” only the registered keys, and the injection ECU will “wait” for permission only from “its” device.
If no code is entered into the corresponding memory cells of the injection ECU, then the “brains” will not wait for permission to start at all. Therefore, it is possible to disable the immobilizer without removing the injection computer if the control unit supports flashing via the diagnostic connector. For such cars, car thieves usually took with them spare “brains” - new ones, where the immobilizer had not yet been registered, or “wiped out”.
At the same time, bypassing the standard immobilizer in this way did not cause any problems with the rest of the electronics - in the standard wiring, the APS is embedded in the gap of a single bus between the diagnostic connector and the “brains”. Therefore, deactivating the immobilizer in this way only deprived the subsequent possibility of diagnosing the injection computer, and even then this problem was eliminated by a simple jumper in the connector of the APS unit.
The device of the standard immobilizer APS-4
First, let's figure out what this immobilizer model is and what functions it performs. This kind of device is designed to prevent the engine of your car from starting in cases where access to it is recognized by the system as unauthorized, that is, in the event of a possible theft.
This can lead to a complete replacement of control and monitoring units in the event of malfunctions. When the ignition is turned off, the immobilizer is activated automatically (the buzzer will emit a short beep and the indicator will go into flashing mode every 2.5 seconds), entering the theft protection mode.
Immobilizer, what is it for and how does it work?
Using the example of the immobilizer of VAZ 21083i, 21093i, 21099i cars with an electronic engine control system (ECM), let's figure out why it is needed and how it works?
Since such information may be useful in independently diagnosing malfunctions in the operation of a car engine. For example, why the car engine does not start or starts and immediately stalls.
Immobilizer, what is it for and how does it work?
— What is an immobilizer?
An immobilizer is an electronic device built into the vehicle's engine management system.
— Why do you need an immobilizer on a car?
The main purpose of an immobilizer is to prevent unauthorized starting of the car engine. That is a security function.
— How does the immobilizer work?
The immobilizer of VAZ 21083, 21093, 21099 cars (car anti-theft system - APS-4) consists of several elements: a control unit, an LED system status indicator, a code reader from the key and three coded key fobs (two working - black and one training - red ).
The control unit is most often installed to the left of the driver, under the dashboard. An indicator with a code reader (receiver) is located next to the ignition switch on the front panel (the standard location of the “choke” button on a carburetor car). The driver uses the main key with a black chip key every day to start the car. Keep the red learning keychain at home in case you lose the main key and need to learn a new one.
Inside the control unit, in addition to the indicator, there is a buzzer.
— How does the immobilizer work?
The immobilizer works in close interaction with the controller - the control unit (ECU) of the electronic engine control system (ECM) and the ignition key (or rather, with a chip in the key).
If the immobilizer system on the car is activated, then the same code is located on the key fob chip and in the permanent (not erased by resetting the terminal) memory of the ECU, which must match when trying to start the engine.
How does this happen?
When you turn on the ignition (turn the key in the ignition switch), the code reader reads the code (tag) from the microchip of the key fob and enters it into the memory of the immobilizer unit. At the same time, the controller sends a request to the immobilizer unit via the diagnostic line “K” (trying to detect the immobilizer). If an immobilizer is installed in the system (detected), then the controller in response receives a code from the immobilizer unit’s memory. This code is compared with a similar one stored in the ECU's memory. If the codes match, the controller allows the engine to start; if not, it blocks (turns off the ignition system and fuel pump).
When the ignition is turned off, the immobilizer automatically goes into security mode.
— Immobilizer malfunction?
The main fault is “the car engine does not start.”
If the system status indicator LED blinks at a frequency of one to five times per second, then there is most likely no communication between the immobilizer unit and the ECM.
If the LED flashes once or twice, then a pause, again once or twice, again a pause, etc., then the immobilizer unit is most likely faulty.
— How to disable the immobilizer?
Install a new ECU control unit into the engine control system, but do not connect the wiring harness block to the APS unit.
Reflash the ECU, removing information about the immobilizer from it. Disable the immobilizer unit.
It will not be possible to disable it by removing the wiring harness block from the immobilizer unit, or by cutting the “K-line” wires, because when starting the engine, the ECU, according to its program, will look for the immobilizer and, if it does not find it (without receiving the code), it will not give permission to start.
It is possible to add your own code to the ECU memory, to enter which you need to perform a certain procedure, which will allow you to start the engine for one trip. After stopping the engine, this procedure will have to be repeated again.
Notes and additions
— In addition to the immobilizer installed standard at the factory, for VAZ 21083, 21093, 21099 it is possible to install a car alarm. It is also built into the ECM and the vehicle’s on-board electrical network and has the same security function, but with significantly expanded functionality (depending on the alarm model). In particular, it notifies the owner and everyone around about an attempted theft.
— On VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 cars with carburetor engines, the APS 2000 car anti-theft system can be installed, which does not have an ignition key recognition function (key without a chip).
— VAZ 2113, 2114, 2115 cars use the same anti-theft system — APS-4 or APS-6 (since 2007) with a similar device and functions.

What is an immobilizer and why do you need to disable IMMO
In simple terms, IMMO is essentially a sentry standing outside the door guarding an extremely secret facility. The door is locked with a lock from the outside and a bolt from the inside. When someone, even with their own key, wants to open the door, the sentry will definitely ask for the password. If the password of the person entering matches the password that the sentry knows, he will allow him to open the door and move the bolt. If not, then even the key will not help. True, various options are possible:
- the sentry forgot his password; the sentry needs to be reminded of this password;
- needs to be replaced with a new sentry;
- there is no need for a sentry. You need to remove the password and not set it again.
This is exactly what happens with the immobilizers of all cars, be it Priora, Kalina or any imported model. It is he who is the sentry in the guarded car. If the owner of a car with a chip key gets behind the wheel, he reads the code from it and compares it with the code (password) written in it. If they match, permission is received to turn on the ignition. All other options are similar to the previous example with a sentry. For more details on what it is and how to choose an immobilizer, read our article - how to choose the right immobilizer.
Why is the immobilizer disabled?
In general, initially, when VAZ began installing injection engines, the immobilizers came to the cars not activated (this was done either by the dealer or the first owner.). In addition, there are enough immobilizers for everyone, so many cars may not have one at all, so disabling the immobilizer may not be necessary.
And it is turned off in two cases:
1. When both keys are lost, but the car needs to be started with the so-called “blank” (key without a chip)
2. When installing autostart, this is the most budget-friendly way to bypass the immobilizer.
Replacing the immobilizer unit on VAZ 2108, VAZ 2109, VAZ 21099
How to replace the immobilizer unit and the anti-theft system status indicator on a VAZ 2108-VAZ 21099?
Removal: 1) First disconnect the “-” terminal from the battery; how to do this, see the article: “Replacing the battery”, in paragraph “1”.
2) Next, under the instrument panel, find the wires of the system status indicator, and then remove them from there, and after removing them, disconnect both connectors of these wires.
Note! The indicator wire connectors are marked with different colors, one is green and the other is black!
3) Then, using a flathead screwdriver, pry out the system status indicator housing.
4) And then remove it from the hole in the instrument panel.
Note! When you remove the immobilizer from the hole, take into account the fact that the wire that you disconnected earlier in “Point 2” is connected to the immobilizer, so in order to remove the immobilizer, you will have to carefully pull the wire through the same hole, otherwise you will have the immobilizer There's no way to take it off!
5) Now on the right side under the steering column, use a screwdriver to unscrew the two screws that secure the immobilizer unit to the lower shelf of the instrument panel.
6) After unscrewing the screws securing the immobilizer unit, carefully remove it from the dashboard.
7) And at the end of the operation, disconnect the wire block from the immobilizer unit, and then remove it from the car.
Installation:1) First, connect the wire block to the new immobilizer unit.
2) After that, install it in its place, and when the block is installed, tighten the two screws that secure it until it stops.
3) Next, install the housing of the system status indicator into the hole that is present in the instrument panel, together with the wires.
4) And to complete the operation, connect the two indicator connectors to each other.
Note! When the connectors are connected to each other, put the “-” terminal on the battery in the reverse order of removal!
Why do you have to disable the immobilizer?
VAZ began to equip immo only with injection-type cars. The first anti-theft devices of this series appeared on the VAZ 2110 and they were called APS-4. Today, more modern APS-6 models are more common. Now all cars of the 2110 to 2115 series are equipped with this particular device.
The most common problem with this device is the loss of the key or if the car owner, without knowing it, erased its code. Speaking specifically about VAZ standard immos, you can more often encounter a problem related to the fact that the lights in the cabin do not go out and, as a result, the alarm does not go off. In addition, malfunctions of the immobilizer software often occur, as a result of which its central unit does not read information about the key or considers it “not native”. As a result, when you stop to refuel, you risk being left in a stalled car.
To reprogram (marry, bypass, flash, upgrade, adapt) a device, you must first turn it off. In addition, immobilizers are usually disabled when installing a car alarm.
Where is the immobilizer located?
- VAZ 2110 - In “tens” such a system is installed directly above the ECU. To gain unhindered access to it, you need to remove the special side plastic panel.
- VAZ 2109 (high panel) – The immobilizer is mounted in the former installation location of the choke drive (between the instrument panel and the steering column).
- Lada Kalina – Here the anti-theft device is located behind the interior heater controls. To carry out this procedure, the center console trim is removed.
- First of all, it is necessary to restore the diagnostic line. For this, a special jumper is used that connects the wire block to the computer and the electronic control unit. Another method of restoring the line may involve cutting the wires and then connecting them. The most important thing is that the connector is installed in the same place as before.
- Now you need to clear the ECU memory and disconnect the immobilizer from the vehicle’s on-board network. To do this, contacts 9.1 and 18 are closed in the diagnostic line connector and only after that the immobilizer is disconnected from the network.
Further actions depend on the type of controller installed in the car. We will consider them only using the Bosch M 1.5.4 device as an example. Open its case and unsolder the contacts of the standard chip. After this, another special electronic chip is soldered in place of the old one, which includes software that is designed to format the internal memory of the controller. After these manipulations, turn on the car’s ignition for a short period of time and turn it off. Solder the standard chip into place and close the controller case. After this, the engine should start without using special keys.
Other controllers can be reprogrammed without re-soldering the board. To do this, their connectors are connected to special computers, from which new data is downloaded to the device’s memory and installed automatically. However, for these actions it is necessary to have both software and special devices capable of communicating with the motor controller.
This is how the immobilizer is turned off on VAZ cars. As you have already noticed, everything is quite complicated and confusing, so we strongly recommend that you still contact specialists in the field of servicing modern cars.
Disabling the immobilizer on the VAZ-2114
Not every motorist has deep knowledge in the field of radio electronics, which is what numerous services take advantage of and sell new electronics for crazy money.
It is much easier to completely disable the device, and you don’t even need to know circuit design to do this.
It is enough to know that in order to disable the device and further normal operation of the engine, it is necessary to completely erase information about the immobilizer in the memory of the electronic control unit . Theoretically, that's all. Now let's move on to practice.
To disable the immobilizer on a VAZ-2114 you must:
- We find the immobilizer unit inside the center console.
- Remove the signal wire connector from the block.
Disconnect the signal wire connector from the immobilizer unit
Finding 9 and 18 contacts
We cut the wires on pins 9 and 18
Despite the simplicity of this method, it does not guarantee correct disabling of the immobilizer.
Flashing the ECU
If you are unable to disable the device, you will need to reflash the computer, which we do not recommend doing on your own. However, if there is simply no other way out, we will try to reflash the VAZ-2114 ECU with our own hands.
Let us remind you that our task is to erase information about the immobilizer from the ECU memory.
To remove the immobilizer in a more complex way, we will need special software, a PC, a soldering station (soldering gun), and a programmer for microcircuits. And everything is done like this:
Immobilizer on VAZ cars
After the advent of the injection method of fuel injection on VAZ cars, all cars leaving the assembly line began to be equipped with a special anti-theft device. Included with the main keys are anti-theft keys designed to unlock the security system. The option is activated either by the buyer himself after purchasing the car, or by employees of the car dealership.
The operating principle of any immobilizer is extremely simple; we have already written about it in the article about the immobilizer crawler. This device is connected to the electronic engine control unit and sends certain signals: prohibition or permission to start the engine. The signal is supplied from the immobilizer control unit, at the input of which a scanning device is installed. A special key is applied to the scanner and the device sends a signal to the ECU that the engine can be started. Otherwise, the starter and ignition circuit remains blocked, which prevents any movement of the vehicle. Some systems also block the fuel pump power supply circuit.
Why is an immobilizer needed and when is it not needed on a VAZ-2114?
The standard immobilizer is designed to deactivate the car engine in the event of unauthorized entry. Easier, a thief can break the door lock, break the ignition switch, or even start the engine. But not for long. The system will shut off fuel and cut off power to the engine as soon as the engine has been running for a few seconds, if it starts at all.
The standard immobilizer recognizes the owner using a key with a specific digital code, which is supposed to be quite difficult to fake. Moreover, in more modern cars, the immobilizer can even allow the thief to move away, but the signal about the break-in and theft has already been sent where it should be.
The latter does not apply to the VAZ-2114. There, the immobilizer is only responsible for blocking the engine and nothing else. However, the device itself is not highly reliable and can shut down completely at any moment, preventing the owner from starting the engine.
It may also be necessary to get rid of a full-time security guard in cases where there is a need for a more advanced alarm system, more reliable and more complex, say, with auto-start. In these cases, you have to turn off the device or look for workarounds.
Device types
Now there are three main types of immobilizers:
- Protective while moving (engine blocking while moving);
- Contact (the most common);
- Contactless.
The first type of immobilizers is characterized by a greater range of action, thanks to a more powerful board and antenna. Its task is to block the engine while the car is moving.
The device is actively used not only by various financial and other organizations, but also by individuals.
The bottom line is that if instead of the rightful owner, as a result of violent actions against him, there was another driver, it would be possible to block the engine while driving at a great distance. The main thing is that the control key fob remains with the owner of the car.
True, this can also be done with mobile systems via a smartphone or GPS control systems, for example, car satellite search modules.
The second type (contact immobilizers) requires the presence of a special reading board in the ignition switch and a key with a chip in which a unique code is stitched.
The disadvantage of such devices is that losing or getting the key into the wrong hands can lead to unpleasant consequences. Therefore, some car owners are forced to spend money on installing additional security measures, such as fingerprint scanning devices or a small keyboard for entering a code.
The third type is contactless immobilizers. They are more reliable in terms of protection than contact ones. The fact is that the basis here is a special chip that sends a signal from a short distance (up to 0.1 meters) to the receiving board.
The chip can be mounted in any unattractive thing, and the board can receive a signal through an antenna placed in any place known only to the owner of the car. Those. if the chip falls into the wrong hands, you also need to know where to put it in order to start the car.
Nowadays, most new car models come with standard immobilizers. They are installed at the factory, and therefore these devices are maximally integrated into the electronics and design of the machine.
But if they do not meet the car owner’s safety criteria, you can additionally install another immobilizer as an anti-theft device.
Methods for disabling the VAZ-2115 immobilizer
If you don’t have the skills to reprogram a security system, but don’t want to make charitable investments in favor of car services, that’s okay. The solution to the potential problem is quite simple: you can disable the standard immobilizer yourself. It is worth considering that this is recommended only in cases where your VAZ-2115 already has an alternative anti-theft system installed, otherwise you will simply give the green light to attackers.
So, in order to deactivate APS-4 without self-flashing and provide unhindered access to the engine, you need to do two things: completely dismantle the immobilizer itself and erase the security coding data from the memory of the car’s electronic control unit. This procedure must be carried out carefully: there is a risk that the system will regard this intervention as an attempt to steal a car and block further access.
First you need to find your immobilizer unit itself, dismantle it and disconnect the wired signal connector (block). By default, the VAZ-2115 has it in the center console, so there should be no problems with detection. Remember that if your console device differs from the standard one, it is better to refer to the instructions, with the help of which you can find answers to all your questions.
This method is fast, simple and convenient, but, unfortunately, it cannot absolutely guarantee that you will disable the built-in factory protection system. If this procedure does not help, intervention in the electronic system will be required - flashing, which is still better to entrust to specialists, since careless actions can block not only the engine, but also the entire control system as a whole. Take care of the safety of your car in advance - and it will serve you as long as you want.
Almost all modern cars are equipped with this new anti-theft device. Many owners of domestic cars are puzzled by questions of how to disable it or what to do if the immobilizer does not see the key? In this article we will tell you why drivers turn off this anti-theft device and how to perform this procedure yourself on VAZ cars.
Rules for disabling the immobilizer
Before disabling the immobilizer, you must disconnect the connector from the protection, that is, give the system a signal that the immobilizer is missing. After this, you can erase the data on the device and replace it with new ones. But in practice everything is not so simple.
If you turn off the device incorrectly, the system may perceive this as unauthorized access and the car will be completely blocked. In this situation, it will be difficult to do anything, all that remains is to call a tow truck. Therefore, be extremely careful. There are two schemes for disabling the immobilizer.
- Cut the wires.
To do this, find the immobilizer control unit. Most often it is located behind the center console, next to the radio. After this, you need to find the connector on the block and remove it. In this connector you will find 20 contacts, first find the ninth and then the eighteenth. These two wires need to be cut, connected and insulated.
After this, all that remains is to remove the immobilizer and restore the line used for diagnostics (K-line). To do this, install a jumper that will restore communication between the ECU and the diagnostic block. We cut the wires and connect them, after which the connector is placed in its rightful place.
- Reflash it yourself.
For this you will need:
- PC or tablet;
- soldering iron;
- PAK-loader programmer.
Next, you need to disassemble the ECU, find the controller connector and connect the PAK loader to it. We read the factory firmware with the BIN extension. It is also necessary to read information through the EEPROM connector. After this, you need to save the factory firmware on the computer and upload a clean EEPROM to the ECU. After this, you can disconnect the bootloader, assemble the controller and install it in place.
A soldering iron will be required if the auto ROM unit will be sealed. Or you can use the COMBISET program with the EEPROM cleaning function, then you won’t have to unsolder anything.
If we are talking about a specific APS-6 immobilizer, then it will be useful to know the purpose of the immo outputs.
- The green wire belongs to the antenna coil in the ignition switch.
- Blue is responsible for the additional power relay (for power windows).
- Green-white comes from the headlight switch.
- Orange and white refers to the rear fog lights.
- Pink is a constant plus from the battery.
- The yellow wire connects to ground when the rear fog lights are turned on.
- Yellow-black refers to K-line, if it is CL 7, then we have a wire from the diagnostic block, and if CL 8, then from the EUR control unit.
- The white one goes to the antenna coil located in the ignition switch.
- The green-black one comes from the driver's side door VC.
- Brown – from VK dimensions.
- Black – mass.
- Orange refers to terminal 15 of the ignition switch.
Bypassing the immobilizer when connecting an alarm system
Before you disable the immobilizer on the VAZ 2110, you should study all the methods for such a restart, and the first thing you should start with is this useful option from VAZ. Since it is in these cars that immobilizers most often fail, manufacturers have come up with a simple solution to this problem. Thanks to special software, you can perform an alternative start of the device and make one trip in emergency mode. However, to do this you will first need to enter a six-digit password. It is activated by pressing the gas pedal. This means that if the “reboot” code is “999999” then you need to press the gas the corresponding number of times, at the same interval. This procedure does not cause positive emotions, but in a hopeless situation or when installing an alarm system, this may be the only way to outwit the immobilizer.
Another method is the bypass module (immo crawler). A small electronic device is equipped with transmitting and receiving antennas located inside and outside. The device key or chip is also located inside the case. As soon as you start the car with the alarm, the internal antenna reads the code and transmits it to the ignition switch.
Important! If the car is started with the key, such a crawler will not work.
If one of the keys is lost, the remaining spare can be disassembled and the chip removed from it and secured to the ignition switch. After this, you can use any ignition key and the immo will be disabled.
This concerns generally accepted tricks that will help in solving such issues as disabling the immobilizer on a VAZ 2114. If you want to manually disable the immo, then you must adhere to the following recommendations.
How to disable?
We find the diagnostic connector. In 2109 it is installed under the glove compartment, in 2110 it is under the steering column, and in 2115 it is in the center console.
We make a jumper. It can be made from anything - a piece of wire, a hairpin, any metal object or needle that can be bent. Let's install it this way.
We try to start the car in any available way. If it starts without reading the key, then you succeeded.

How to disable the VAZ immobilizer with your own hands
Having disassembled it, insert the working key into the lock and turn on the ignition, body number and engine number. Probably immobilizers tend to fail unexpectedly, you can observe short pulses with a duration of 0.1 seconds, so the retraining procedure will not work. You even experienced the innocent connection of diagnostic equipment with the ignition on, as it is also called interference from a regular cell phone. The main thing is that the catalog numbers of the computers match the year of manufacture of the machine. The updated device also has new features.
See:
Even two exit options. It is possible to install a crawler or activate the mode. To control the first, a key is used, be sure to count. Yes, Russian developers could not do without some errors. You need to remove the connector from the unit so that the retraining procedure will not work.
Why do you turn off the standard immobilizer?
Domestic anti-theft systems, most often, are not of high quality. Many immobilizers tend to fail at the most inopportune moment, thereby making it impossible to start the engine. However, there are two reasons why the anti-theft device will definitely fail:
- Connection of devices intended for electronic diagnostics of all vehicle systems that does not comply with the rules. The fact is that many drivers connect such devices without removing the key from the lock. The engine control unit and the anti-theft system exchange information using the K-Line, which is diagnostic. Thus, a computer connected to the car’s network at this moment can confuse the program code and disable the immobilizer.
- If the battery runs out completely, unnecessary information is stored in the memory system, which negatively affects the operation of the anti-theft device. In most cases, it simply refuses to scan the code key and the car can only move when towed. In this case, the technicians simply changed the control unit, thus physically disabling the immobilizer.
And yet, not everything is as bad as it seems at first glance. Manufacturers of domestic cars have come up with a special option that allows you to start a single engine with a faulty anti-theft system. This means you can start your car and get to a specialist service center.
This option is activated using a special password preset by the manufacturer and a single press on the gas pedal, although there are exceptions, depending on the brand of the anti-theft kit and the car model.
How to disable the immobilizer?
Do not remove the training key from the ignition switch. If after the cleaning procedure the engine starts, the immobilizer will begin to fulfill its purpose normally. This common rumor process has several steps, but there is no way to turn it off. And, if necessary, a controller. Now let's look at this, excluding the system of smooth dimming of light.
The method for disabling the immobilizer comes down to if it is acting up. The loan where it is located is just us. What exists, and from those places drag the wire to the remaining diodes, the permission to start the motor or block it is turned on, alas, there must be an inscription 6 on the board itself.
KEY-DOP
Looks like someone bit it off. On injection VAZ cars, climb inside. Note: Do not try to register the key fob; the engine should start without using special keys. However, therefore it will not be possible to drive the car; there are two methods for turning off the immobilizer. The whole car today can be safely called an example of a reliable and good domestic car, which has to be repaired with the help of car service specialists so that you can freely hit the road.
Deactivation of the anti-theft device on VAZ cars
The engine control unit, just like the immobilizer, has a special memory cell. This device has a foreign name EEPROM. In the anti-theft system, the EEPROM stores information about the code keys that are required when starting the engine. The controller has such memory to successfully interact with the immobilizer, thereby creating an integral whole with the anti-theft system, without which the operation of the controller is impossible.
The whole process of disabling the immobilizer comes down to the fact that it is completely forced out of the system. First of all, the plug of the anti-theft device is pulled out from the ECU connector, and then the controller’s memory is cleared of any information about the device being removed.
