VAZ 21114 engine: characteristics, malfunctions and tuning


The 2111 engine available in the AvtoVAZ manufacturer’s line did not meet the Euro-3 environmental standards existing at that time. In general, the design satisfied the management of the manufacturer’s plant in terms of cost, and the users in terms of technical characteristics. Factory tuning made it possible to obtain a modification of the 21114 engine, different configurations of which comply with Euro-2, Euro-3 and Euro-4 standards.

Technical characteristics of motor 21114

Initially, the manufacturer AvtoVAZ built into the engine the possibility of industrial tuning. However, the number of design techniques is limited:

  • modernization of the combustion chamber;
  • relief of CVS.

In this case, the following technologies were used for engine 21114:

  • increasing the height of the cylinder block by 2.3 mm, changing the cylinder head threaded connection to M12 x 1.25 mm;
  • use in the engine of a crankshaft from 11183 for a piston stroke of 75.6 mm;
  • installation of pulley and flywheel, ShPG from 2110;
  • enlargement of the combustion chamber to dimensions of 5 x 8.1 cm.

After replacing the pairwise-parallel injection with a phased one, the engine layout changed; for the convenience of repair departments, a special marking 11180 is applied to the cylinder head. The designers were not tasked with increasing power, but the cylinder volume still increased by 0.1 liters in comparison with the original ICE 2111.

The modernization of the eight-valve engine for front-wheel drive models took two years. The main goals were to reduce fuel consumption and increase dynamic performance by reducing mechanical engine losses, and at the same time reducing harmful vibrations and noise. And of course, increased reliability. Euro 4 standards require that the engine maintain its original emissions parameters twice as long - up to 160 thousand km. And we almost doubled the resource: from 120 thousand to 200 thousand km. The connecting rod and piston group of the VAZ-21116, like the sixteen-valve one, is purchased. In the future, we plan to produce some parts ourselves, and we will continue to purchase some from foreign partners from the Federal Mogul group, who intend to localize the production of components in Russia. We also take into account the interests of the Renault-Nissan alliance. If engine production volumes increase, then it would be reasonable to purchase additional equipment and organize the production of connecting rod and piston group parts in Togliatti.

To disassemble the cylinder head on a VAZ 2190 Lada Granta with VAZ 11183, 21116 and 11186 modification engines, prepare a standard set of tools. Remove the cylinder head from the car. Disassembly is carried out for the purpose of repairing the cylinder head, or replacing attached elements in the event of their failure. Perform the following sequence of actions:

  • First of all, it is necessary to remove the intake module along with the throttle assembly. To do this, unscrew the five nuts securing the module to the intake manifold and remove it.
  • Next, unscrew the two nuts securing the front thermal insulation shield and the transport eye.

  • Remove the insulating shield and eyelet from the studs.
  • Next, unscrew the two nuts for the rear fastening of the intake and catalytic manifolds (the same nuts also secure the rear thermal shield).

Model features

The developers have built into the 21114 engine a potential of within 120 hp. With. without reducing service life. For sports cars, boosting up to 180 hp is possible. pp., but the production of piston and CV gears will increase sharply, and major overhauls will be required more often. To improve engine parameters, the timing structure has been modified:

  • camshaft drive by toothed belt;
  • pin at the end of the camshaft for reading by the timing sensor.

All available attachments are driven by one belt. Another feature is the partial integration of the exhaust manifold with the exhaust system. The resulting catalytic collector includes a catalytic converter and a muffler exhaust pipe.

The polymer receiver has a configuration that differs from the shape on the basic version 2111. In the fuel system, the return line is replaced by an injector ramp, which by default is equipped with either Boshevsky 0280-158-022, or yellow VAZ 20734, Siemens injectors. Instead of the ignition module there is a coil with 4 pins; the ECU uses an M7.9.7 or January version 7.2 controller.

The cooling system is equipped with a new thermostat, and the internal combustion engine includes an 80-amp generator. The repair manual contains a step-by-step description of all operations, for example the procedure for changing the oil. The manufacturer recommends not using turbines when upgrading engines with your own hands.

Malfunctions of the VAZ 11186 begin after 60,000 kilometers, if you do not visit the service center at 40 thousand. Knocks may appear in the VAZ engine. They indicate unadjusted valve clearances

If the speed in the VAZ engine fluctuates. The problem may lie in a malfunction of the throttle valve. It is necessary to check the functionality of the damper sensors. If they are not working properly, replace them with new ones.

If the thermostat breaks down, the VAZ 11186 engine begins to warm up slowly. When starting, it stalls - problems with the mass air flow sensor. If the mass air flow sensor is not repaired in time, the car may stall while driving somewhere on the highway.

There may be problems with the ignition unit or the standard electronic unit. The latter is unreliable. Therefore, if glitches appear in the control unit, it is better to replace it immediately.

Among the critical breakdowns, experienced mechanics identify problems with the pump and tension roller. If the roller jams, the teeth of the timing belt are cut off. The valve bends in almost every such case. The engine is immediately sent for overhaul. Therefore, it is better to avoid roller wedge and problems with the pump.

Advantages and disadvantages

Since the 21114 motor is already an improved version of the 2111, there are no obvious shortcomings here. The main “diseases” of internal combustion engines are:

  • intense heating of the pistons - there are no special nozzles for oil cooling; they will appear only in later versions of the manufacturer;
  • cylinder head – not suitable for other engines

Reliability, weaknesses, maintainability

These three main indicators complement the technical characteristics of the engine in sufficient detail and give a more complete picture of the power unit.

Reliability

VAZ-21114 is one of the few engines with high reliability. Car owners have repeatedly spoken about this on forums. Car service technicians share the same opinion.

For example, the engine of a Lada Kalina 1117 with a mileage of 130 thousand km was inspected. The result was amazing. The pistons are clean, the hone on the cylinder walls is preserved, and there is no carbon deposits on the valves.

Traditionally, for the VAZ company, the 21114 engine was installed on the entire line of cars produced at the time of its inception:

  • 21101 – four-door sedan;
  • 21112 – five-door station wagon;
  • 2113 – three-door hatchback;

The VAZ-21114 engine was created in 2004. It was first presented to the general public in the same year at the AvtoVAZ auto show. The basis for the development of the new power unit was the famous VAZ-2111. Essentially, the new engine is an improved version of its predecessor.

ICE production has been established in Tolyatti. Engine production continued until 2013.

Initially, it was planned to equip the promising Lada Kalina and Lada Priora with this unit. But later this engine began to be installed on other car models.

The VAZ-21114 is a gasoline in-line four-cylinder aspirated engine with a volume of 1.6 liters and a power of 81.6 hp. s and a torque of 125 Nm.

Causes of breakdowns and elimination

Thanks to the deep grooves in the pistons, the 21114 engine does not bend the valve, reducing the frequency of overhauls until the full service life of the piston group or rings is exhausted. However, there are smaller faults characteristic of it:

Method for increasing the power of an 8 valve engine with a split gear

The split, that is, adjustable gear was not used in the last project. It is better to install it on “non-plug-in motors”. Setting method:

  1. The moving and fixed parts are marked with a mark, the same as on a standard pulley;
  2. Installation is carried out in the usual manner, aligning the crankshaft and timing mechanism according to the marks (as when replacing a belt), you should also remember about the correct tightening torque of the belt;
  3. If in the 4th cylinder the intake and exhaust valves are not open “to the maximum”, we carry out an adjustment: loosen the outer screws, and, holding the outer part of the gear, set the camshaft correctly. Tighten the fixing screws.

By default, the 21114 engine has a power of about 82 hp. With. To safely increase this characteristic to 120 hp. With. Several types of tuning are used:

  • replacing the standard camshaft - modifications of the Dynamics 118 or Nuzhdin 10.93 are usually used;
  • installation of a split-type gear - additional phase adjustment is required, power increases to 85 hp. With.;
  • 54 mm damper with receiver – it is necessary to install a zero resistance filter;
  • modification of the intake tract - polishing the channels, ensuring their equal length;
  • replacing the exhaust manifold - spider configuration 4:2:1 on the exhaust manifold (direct-flow);
  • valve relief - T-shaped modifications are used;
  • modification of the cylinder head - milling on a machine.

Additionally, instead of the standard piston group, you can install a lightweight kit from Priora, completely suitable in size. Chip tuning is useless for this engine.

Thus, the 21114 engine became an improved version of the basic version 2111. Most of the components and parts were used from the manufacturer’s previously existing engines to reduce costs while achieving Euro-3 standards. However, unique units also appeared, which were then used in subsequent versions of VAZ engines, for example, cylinder head and crankshaft.

It's no secret that in its standard, that is, in serial form, the engine does not develop all the power it is capable of. You can configure the firmware in a new way, but you won’t be able to significantly change the load curve without reducing the environmental class. You can buy a "racing camshaft" to install in place of the stock one. But then the firmware will have to be changed to accommodate the new phases... Let's consider what happens if we use only accessible tuning methods. Let's say right away that on the VAZ-2114 hatchback the increase in power can be 20% or even 25%, and we are talking about only 8 valves. There is no need to bore the valve channels.
