Changing the clutch cable on a Lada Priora with your own hands

As practice shows, replacing the cable connecting the clutch drive with the gearbox on a Lada Priora is very rarely required. It breaks quite infrequently. The most common problem with it is the threads; its components become frayed. For this reason, the clutch mechanism begins to jam regularly and the pedal eventually does not want to return to its place.

The replacement procedure is not particularly complicated, but it does require time and some effort. For work you will need the following tools and materials:

  • a set of keys;
  • flat screwdriver;
  • cable clamp.

You can get to it in Priora only through the engine compartment. To do this, of course, you will need to open the hood. The cable itself is located next to the gearbox.

In what cases does an element need to be replaced:

  • when broken;
  • due to jamming;
  • due to stretching;
  • in case of failure of the mechanism regulating its length.

How to install

Before installing a new cable, you need to thoroughly lubricate both the bushing and pin on the pedals.
The plastic composition Litol-24 is best suited for this. Then the end of the cable is threaded into a hole located in the bulkhead of the engine compartment on the passenger compartment side of the car so that it ends up in the engine compartment. The rubber cover is also tucked in there.

The gear tip driver is put directly onto the clutch drive pin and secured with a bracket.

The end of the shell is secured with a nut to the pedal bracket. Make sure that the fixation is secure. It is unlikely that anyone will like to, if something happens, climb there again due to a poor-quality connection.

Next, under the hood, the lower part of the shell is stuck into a special hole on the gearbox bracket.

The leash is screwed onto the end of the cable (there is a thread there) - the latter should protrude approximately one turn outward, but no more.

Now comes the time to adjust the clutch drive. Upon completion of this process, the pedal is pressed all the way two or three times and then the setting is repeated.

The working surface of the tip driver must be treated with the above-mentioned lubricant.

All that remains is to make sure that the entire mechanism is now working properly and install all previously removed parts in place.

Approximate prices

A new clutch cable on a Priora is sold in stores across the country for 350-850 rubles . The most expensive is the original spare part. Approximate prices for cables from different manufacturers are given below:

A used clutch cable can be found for 250-400 rubles .

If a spare part is purchased through a private advertisement or from an online store, delivery may be required. This service is usually paid. Its price depends on the transport company and the distance from the seller to the buyer, and the type of delivery. On average, goods are delivered throughout the city for 300-500 rubles . Some online companies do not charge for delivery.

What is this part and signs of wear?

The clutch cable is a mechanism that provides traction between the vehicle and the road surface. This element is present in cars with manual and automatic gearboxes. This part is made from friction material . Over time, the cable wears out, stretches and breaks.

Signs that it’s time to change the cable on a Priora car:

If the clutch cable is disconnected, then simply put it back in place. If it is worn out, then it is replaced with a new one. This part cannot be repaired.

Finalization

Purpose: install a gasket between the clutch cable and the gearbox fork

Procedure:

  1. Remove the clutch cable end from the fork.
  2. Unscrew the cable end, having previously measured the length of the free threads.
  3. Remove the clutch cable boot.
  4. Remove the rubber insert from the cable stop (photo No. 1).
  5. Instead, install a round washer made of porous rubber (diameter 32-35 mm, hole 12-13 mm) (photo 2).

  1. Cut a piece of rubber measuring 20x70 mm, 2.5-3 mm thick.
  2. Glue it (for example, with “Moment” glue) to the plastic cable stop (one turn), secure with electrical tape 1.5 turns.

  1. Insert the cable into the bracket on the gearbox and put on the boot.
  2. Screw on the tip, leaving a couple of millimeters less free threads on the stud (since the new gasket is thicker than the factory part).
  3. Place a 2 mm foam rubber spacer between the cable tip and the fork lever.
  4. Adjust the clutch pedal.

As a result: the effect was noticeable immediately. Now the rattling can only be heard with the windows open. After modifying the clutch cable fastening, the car drove more than 15 thousand km, the gearbox noise was within normal limits. Increased vibrations and noise were noticed only at a temperature of -20°C, when the rubber gaskets become hard. The author has posted sound files (engine acceleration-braking mode at 1500-2000 rpm in 3rd gear), which shows what the noise was from the gearbox before and after modification. On foreign cars, increased clutch cable vibrations are dealt with using a special weight (Renault Logan cable). You can repeat the foreign experience in a garage, for example, wrap a bitumen ball around the cable sheath (taken from a vibration damper).

Let us remind you that owners of Lada Granta, Kalina and Priora cars also encounter clicks in the clutch pedal.

Removing clutch pedal clicks

How to adjust the clutch? If the clicking becomes constant, then you can get rid of this problem in a simple way, showing a little ingenuity, and you need to use an ordinary ruler. As a rule, clicking sounds come from the clutch control unit. You need to do the following: open the hood of the car and inspect the area to the left of the battery. This is where the clutch cable goes into the fork. To inspect it you will need to pull it out of the plug.

Using a ruler, measure the distance from the base of the cable to the adjusting screw. The distance must be exactly 27 mm. The main factor in adjusting the Priora clutch is accuracy. It should be noted that this indicator should in no way increase or, conversely, decrease with a deviation of even one millimeter.

Otherwise, the pedal will continue its annoying clicking. Now you need to put the cable back. After adjusting the distance, you need to depress the clutch pedal several times. Having eliminated this problem, the softer operation of the clutch release pedal will immediately become noticeable, compared to how it worked before the adjustment.

How to replace the clutch cable of a Lada Priora

Causes of breakdowns and solutions to problems

Domestic automakers are not particularly reliable and durable in their parts and assemblies. It is not surprising that many car components quickly fail and are no longer suitable for further use. All this causes many car owners to have characteristic problems in the operation of the clutch mechanism on their car. However, you should not blame only car manufacturers for all the problems that arise, since many malfunctions are the result of careless operation of the car by the car owner himself.

The cable should be adjusted as often as possible. The fact is that such preventive work helps to avoid a number of problems and, accordingly, allows you to save a considerable share of the financial resources of car owners. Normal operation of the clutch mechanism is the key to safe operation of the vehicle.

Replacing the clutch cable on a Priora

Welcome! The clutch cable is rare, but it still happens, and the most common thing that happens to it is the metal part of the cable waving, which is why it starts to jam and the clutch pedal simply cannot return back, but we won’t talk about the symptoms (More on that below we have already written) but let us briefly explain why this cable is needed at all, its real name is: “Clutch release cable”, you can already understand that thanks to it the clutch is disengaged (That is, the release bearing separates both disks from each other, thanks to which you can change the speed and in general, the clutch will be disabled when the engine can even work) and if this cable is not there, then switching gears will become much more difficult (Without a clutch you will have to switch them, it’s possible, but you just need experience and quick hands, if you are interested in that how you can change the speed without pressing the clutch pedal, then in this case, watch the video below, everything is explained there and shown with a clear example).

Note! To carry out the work of replacing the clutch cable, you need to stock up on: All the keys that are in your kit (If you have one) and a ruler or caliper (In general, something that can be used to measure the distance between the fork and the leash) and we also recommend in a spare parts store for a car, buy a clamp that attaches the clutch cable to the pin, just tell the consultant that you will still need this clamp if you suddenly lose the old one (And it’s very easy to lose it)!

Replacement algorithm

Location of the clutch cable under the hood.

  1. Open the hood and remove the air filter housing. To do this, remove the sensor (mass air flow sensor), unscrew the clamp and remove the housing itself from the mounting holes.

Scheme for dismantling the air filter housing.

We use a key set to 17. Spray with WD-40 if it’s difficult.

We carefully pick up this bracket with a screwdriver.

Installing the cable is not all because you need to adjust its tension. To do this, you need to pull the cable all the way forward by the threaded end. Taking a caliper, measure the distance from the clutch release lever to the cable. It should be 27 mm .

Next, we assemble everything in reverse order.

How to know when it's time to change the cable

The following signs indicate the need to replace the clutch cable:

  1. Clicking sounds appear when you press the clutch pedal. They can be eliminated by tightening the cable. If such manipulations do not help, the part will have to be replaced.
  2. Periodic pedal jamming .

You should not delay replacing the cable, because it can break at the most inopportune moment. In such a situation, you can engage first gear and start from the starter. The car will roll forward with the starter and start, you will have first gear to get to the service station or parking lot! But this is dangerous and we do not recommend doing this. Moreover, this can be bad for the starter.
