The technical content depends on the configuration of the liftback. The “Standard” version has the suspension from the previous generation of Kalina, a “long” steering rack (such cars do not have an amplifier) ​​and minimal sound insulation. In the “Norma”, which already has an EUR and a “short” rack, the front suspension has increased caster, and the sound insulation package has also been expanded. Finally, “Lux” can boast of stiffer suspensions and the most complete set of anti-noise. Therefore, two “Grants” in different configurations turned out to be very useful in the test. There are no revelations on the Norma: the omnivorous chassis is combined with a retuned, but still far from ideal, electric booster. In addition, the VAZ team mentioned a new vacuum booster and master brake cylinder. I also did not notice any global improvements in braking.

Modifications of Lada Granta sedan

The pre-styling version of this station wagon was offered on our market from 2012 to 2022.

Trunk Kalina sedan

The configuration in this version is the first model whose dimensions were calculated by a computer program. The model has been produced since 2004. The sedan's dimensions are similar to the station wagon, but due to the difference in design types, the sedan's interior seems more spacious:

  • length 4040 mm;
  • width 1700 mm;
  • height 1500 mm;
  • vehicle clearance 160 mm.

The trunk of the sedan is 400 liters. This figure can be increased by folding the passenger seats. Trunk volume Kalina sedan:

  • trunk width – 97 cm;
  • height – 51.5 cm;
  • diagonal – 97 cm.

The sedan has a fairly spacious interior and a roomy trunk, although it is not specifically designed for transporting large cargo. You cannot put large items in the trunk, but it is easy to transport luggage up to 500 kg.

Internal dimensions of Lada Granta

Equally important when purchasing are the internal parameters. They influence the comfort of being in a car and making long trips. An additional advantage is the possibility of numerous adjustments to the position of the seats, if there is enough space in the cabin to move them, rearrange them and several tilt modes.

For the stylish Lada Granta, the overall dimensions inside are really well thought out and allow all passengers and the driver to spend even long trips with maximum comfort.

The height from the junction of the seat and backrest is 910 mm for the second row and 990 for the front seats. The seat widths are 49 cm and 51 cm respectively. The distance from the second row seat to the first varies from 12 to 33.5 cm, which allows passengers to sit comfortably in the seats.

The height of the seats relative to the floor of the cabin for the second row is 34 cm, and for the first 28.5 cm (subject to slight adjustment). The distance from the pedals to the edge of the seat can be from 33.5 to 56 cm.

The trunk dimensions are another advantage of the Granta. The width of the compartment is 135 cm, but the width of the opening is much smaller (95 cm), which must be taken into account when loading the car. The depth of the trunk is 1 m and 2.5 cm. Its height is as much as 60 cm, which allows you to transport even a variety of household appliances without any problems.

The steering wheel parameters will certainly be of interest to the future driver. The width of the front pillar is 4 cm, but the diameter of the steering wheel is 37.5 cm. This arrangement is very convenient and allows you to easily drive the Grant. In addition, all other characteristics allow for comfortable trips on any route, with any load in the trunk and any number of passengers.

Characteristics of the Lada Granta interior

The interior is typical for a budget car. The gray plastic of the dashboard doesn't even try to seem soft. There is nothing superfluous on the dashboard - a speedometer, a tachometer, a scattering of pentagrams and a trip computer screen. It is simple and informative. The same can be said about the “twists” who manage the operation of the stove and air conditioner. The only thing that stands out on the front panel is the screen of the multimedia system equipped with a touchpad. It has good performance, but mediocre brightness: when exposed to sunlight, it becomes impossible to read data from the screen.

But the rear passengers have practically nothing except seats and a roof over their heads - no ashtray, no USB connector, no niches in the rear doors where they could put anything, only pockets on the backs of the front seats. However, this is normal for a budget car.

Lada Granta - dimensions, ground clearance

The entire Lada Granta family is class B in size. If we talk about the sedan, the length of the Lada Granta sedan is 4.26 m, the width reaches 1.7 m, and the height is 1.5 m. The liftback has a length even smaller - 4.246 m, height and width remained unchanged. The wheelbase of both cars is the same: 2.476 m. The front track of the car is larger than the rear: 1.43 m versus 1.414 m. The clearance of the Lada Granta when fully loaded reaches 16 cm. As for the curb weight, it is 1.075 tons (for the liftback - 1.085 t.), and the total is 1.56 t. for both cars.

Naturally, the trunk volume of Lada Grants also varies. Oddly enough, the sedan has more - 480 hp, which is 40 hp. more liftback indicators. However, everything changes if you fold the seats: then the volume increases to 760 liters. All cars in the family are front-wheel drive, with a transverse engine. The steering is a classic rack and pinion design. The front suspension is independent, made according to the MacPherson pattern. The rear design is simpler - spring, semi-independent. The front brakes are disc brakes, with ventilation, and the rear brakes are traditional for budget VAZs - drum brakes. The gas tank of all cars is the same - 50 liters.

Body. Description of design

The LADA GRANTA body is all-metal, welded, load-bearing structure. The body is welded on an automatic line. Most of the body panels are galvanized to improve their anti-corrosion properties. Electrozinc coating on the inside is applied to the front and middle floor panels, body sides, the A-pillar amplifier, the outer panels of the trunk lid and doors, the front and rear fenders and a number of other parts. The rear wheel arches are galvanized on the outside. Electrozinc coating on both sides is applied to the rear panel, cross members and floor connectors, to the inner panel of the trunk lid and hood, to the trunk lid reinforcement and to a number of other parts. The thickness of the main body panels is 0.8 mm. The body elements are connected to each other by contact welding, and in hard-to-reach places - by semi-automatic electric welding in an inert gas environment. Panel joints and welds are sealed with mastic. After welding the panels, the body is phosphated, electrophoretic and secondary primers are applied and painted. Hidden body cavities are treated with a preservative at the factory. In the body structure, passive safety elements are designed taking into account current and future passive safety requirements. The front and rear bumpers are made of impact-resistant material to absorb impact energy during a collision. The B-pillars, roof and sills are reinforced. All doors are equipped with metal bars to improve resistance to side impacts. All glass is curved, polished, safety type. The windshield is three-layer, the rest are tempered. Rear window - with heating element. The windshield, rear and rear side windows are glued into the body openings and are part of its power circuit. Door glass is sliding. Depending on the configuration, the door glass can be driven by either mechanical or electric window lifters. Depending on the configuration, vehicles may be equipped with central locking, which simultaneously locks or unlocks all doors and the trunk lid. The rear doors are equipped with locking locks, which can be used when driving with children or in other cases when conventional locking cannot provide sufficient protection against unwanted door opening.

The owner of the Izh 2126 Oda claims that his car is more spacious than the Granta liftback.

Let's take a closer look at these cars, take comparative measurements of the interior and draw parallels.

We will not express our ideas; every sandpiper praises his swamp. Everyone remains with their own worldview. And you yourself must decide which car is larger, more comfortable and spacious.

Let's take a look at the factory dimensions of these cars.

For the base of convenience and space in the cabin, we will take the Vesta sedan, also for a work employee. Let's compare them together.

What did we learn from these measurements?! Whatever you say, Oda seems smaller than Granta, but some measurements show discrepancies. For example, the luggage compartment opening turned out to be significantly larger than that of the liftback.

There is certainly a plus in this, but the size of the luggage space itself is significantly smaller, both from official figures and visually.

Oda’s trunk door spans the entire width of the car, which is why the required opening is enlarged.

In a liftback, the luggage compartment door seems to be locked from inside the car, in other words, it is not the entire width of the body. It’s not for nothing that the car turned out to be more torsionally stronger than the sedan. The width of the opening box affects.

Based on measurements from inside the luggage compartment, we also see numbers that speak for themselves.

Also, the depth of the loading space allows you to make sure which trunk is larger and deeper.

Let's take a look at the car door cards.

As can be seen from the measurements, the width of Oda turned out to be slightly wider, by two centimeters. Oda door cards are flat and do not protrude. The doors are thin.

At the elbows, at the level of the elbow, Grant’s width was 140 cm. And at the level of the forearm, at the top of the cards, it was 137 cm.

But visually the place in Grant seems larger. This probably affects the height and length of the cabin. In Oda there seems to be less space, this is felt both behind the wheel, in the driver’s seat, and in the passenger seat. Everything seems narrow, the roof and pillar are pushing in. Maybe this is due to the tilt of the racks; on Oda they are inclined at the most obtuse angle than on Grant.

Serial production of the Lada Granta sedan began in 2011. Initially, it was planned that the new product would replace three models at once, the Samara and Kalina families. At first glance, everything looks logical.

Now Granta is the most modern model of AvtoVAZ OJSC. Its starting price is lower than that of Lada Kalina and Samara. Sales results show us the real picture.

In the first 5 months of 2013, the leader is the Granta (67,236 units sold), the Kalina is in second place (34,173 units), and only the Samara family is in sixth position among all Lada models (16,565 units).

Based on these indicators, it can be assumed that sooner or later the production of Lada Samara will be discontinued. As for the Kalina model, it will definitely remain on the assembly line, especially since this car was restyled in 2013.

But let's return to Lada Granta. The main goal that was set for the developers was to create the cheapest car in the company’s lineup. Therefore, we saved on almost everything.

Granta is built on a modernized Kalina platform. The suspension has been improved, although its design has not changed fundamentally: an independent McPherson suspension is installed in the front, and a dependent one in the rear. Ground clearance is 160 mm. Granta, in addition to the platform itself, also received doors from Lada Kalina.

Selecting the optimal Lada Granta Cross station wagon

Cross with eight-valve 1.6 (87 hp) and manual transmission in the basic Classic configuration costs 559,900 rubles.
The surcharge for a 16-valve valve of the same volume is 15,000, for a “robot” – another 25 thousand. Red Aurum, like other metallics, will cost 6,000 rubles. Having merged two models into a common family under the banner of restyling, AvtoVAZ got rid of the name Kalina. Now they are all Grants: hatchback, liftback, sedan and station wagon. The latter became the basis for the all-terrain version - Lada Granta Cross entered the market almost a year later than other modifications. For us, this is our first acquaintance with a representative of the updated line of the most affordable front-wheel drive vehicles from Tolyatti. To complete the picture, we took two cars: with a manual transmission and an AMT “robot”.

Before restyling, Kalina Cross existed in the VAZ range, and Granta is not very different from it. Thanks to this, she not only looked like the older Vesta, but also grew by 44 mm due to the front overhang extended by the bumper. The interior remained recognizably Kalinovsky, although the button illumination changed from green to white, and additional decor appeared around the central ventilation deflectors.

The ergonomic features are generally inherited. The steering column still does not have a reach adjustment. True, all Crosses are equipped with new front seats with height adjustment and poor lateral support. Alas, even in the lowest position you sit a little higher than you want. Visibility is excellent. But the build quality is traditionally inconsistent. In an attempt to close the window, you pull the window lifter button towards yourself and pull the entire block out of the armrest.

It is incorrect to compare head-on the same-named configurations of regular and elevated station wagons. For example, the top-end Luxe version of the Cross has parking sensors in the rear bumper and a light sensor. In the more democratic Comfort, the cross-country Granta is richer in climate control, which even in a single-zone version is more convenient than an air conditioner. You can roughly estimate that the surcharge for increased ground clearance by 18 mm, larger wheels and a practical body kit made of unpainted plastic is about thirty thousand rubles.

It’s a shame that for the Cross the stabilization system is not offered at all, while in any of the Grants it can be obtained by raising the level of equipment to the maximum Luxe Prestige. Cross is also deprived of a four-speed Jatco automatic transmission: all two-pedal cars are equipped with a modified AMT robot. We already met him at Vesta, but there he assists the 122-horsepower 1.8 engine. Granta has a different engine, and the displacement is two hundred cubic meters more modest.

On the outside, our two 16-valve station wagons produce 106 hp. absolutely the same. And in the cabin of a car with an AMT “robot”, the selector is only partially reminiscent of West’s. It has the same pad as in Vesta, but the lever itself and the podium are different. There is no parking position. The engine should be started in neutral, and can be turned off in gear. Then in the parking lot it is not necessary to secure the car with the handbrake.

The finished AMT gearbox works tolerably well. I liked her on Grant even more than on Vesta. When driving calmly, the “robosarai” is generally a good boy: it starts off confidently, quickly shifts up and is a little impudent, with a shift downwards. As the pace increases, pauses in switching increase, which are characteristic of all “robots” of this type, but this is not very annoying. With the creeping mode it became easier in traffic jams: release the brake - you roll. However, the clutch works with slippage, and Granta still protects it. After standing for a while, the clutch opens, and when gas is added, it closes with a slight delay.

Outside the asphalt, the “robot” does not cause much trouble. The clutch operates smoothly and it is convenient to control the traction. On developed terrain, there is a lack of an assistant when starting on a climb, which only regular Grants have. In order to move uphill without recoil, you have to assist the box with the parking brake lever. It is better not to allow one of the drive wheels to hang out, but to overcome the folds of the terrain while moving. Highly located bumpers do not give much reason to fear for their safety.

A station wagon with a manual drives about the same on rough roads. In theory, manual control allows you to manage traction more efficiently, but in practice, you can completely stall on a climb, which I was not able to do with the “robot”. And yet, it is the three-pedal Cross that leaves the most pleasant impression, allowing you to make full use of the engine’s capabilities.

In the city it’s easier to start on time and quickly integrate into the flow, and on the highway it’s easier to overtake. The cable mechanism is well tuned, the clarity of switching does not raise any questions. The accelerator drive is sensitive, the responsiveness is almost carburetor-like. I don’t see the point of paying even 25 thousand extra for a “robot”. According to statistics, Grants in general and Cross in particular are usually purchased with a manual transmission, and only every tenth buyer chooses two-pedal cars.

The ability of VAZ cars to drive differently, even if they belong to the same batch, has been repeatedly noted. Ours are managed the same way. The Kaluga electric power steering provides them with a light steering wheel with a clear zero position and a logical increase in reactive force. Both Ladas immediately respond to the steering wheel’s deflection with a roll, coming to the arc with a slight delay and turning slightly as it develops. Both begin to slide their front axles to the outside of the turn early due to the modest grip properties of the Pirelli Cinturato P1 tires.

But the two Grants slow down differently. The one with “mechanics” is disappointing with its weak brakes. The free play of the pedal is indecently large, the moment of operation is difficult to predict. The drive in a station wagon with a “robot” works much better. No differences were noticed in the suspension operation. Any of the Grants pleases with excellent smoothness and some kind of exorbitant energy intensity. At the same time, Granta Cross no longer suffers from the early response of shock absorbers on rebound, which is characteristic of the “cross” Kalina.

Apart from AvtoVAZ, no one else offers inexpensive “sheds”. The main competitor of the economic Grant is its own Largus, which was minimally updated in the summer. The most popular (41% of sales) is the Granta station wagon in the inexpensive Classic configuration for 505,500 rubles. The most popular Largus Classic is more expensive: 624–677 thousand. By the standards of the segment, the price difference is noticeable, but people are willing to pay extra for the more spacious Largus, which, based on the results of the first half of 2019, sells three and a half times better than the Granta.

Largus, like Granta, has a Cross version, and it accounts for as much as 38% of Largus sold. The upbeat Granta has not yet gained momentum, but the results of the first month suggest good potential. Moreover, the Grant Cross is taken at the top, albeit with “mechanics”. Well, we must not forget that crossovers accounted for 65% of sales of Kalina station wagons. Cross looks more elegant, and a couple of centimeters under the belly are not superfluous. So we can assume that subsequently at least half of all sold "sheds" of the Granta family will be cross-matched.

What are the characteristics of the trunk?

What is the actual volume in liters? If you fold the rear row of seats, the Granta's trunk volume will reach 770 liters, and in the standard position of the rear passenger row, the trunk volume will be 440 liters. This model is the first ever liftback among the entire AvtoVAZ family. In terms of luggage compartment capacity in its standard state, the Granta managed to outstrip such a popular European hatchback as the Volkswagen Golf. However, with the rear row seats folded, the Golf takes the lead thanks to the trunk volume of 1200 liters, which turned out to be unattainable for the Lada designers. After all, the primary goal was to maintain a single wheelbase and platform similar to a sedan.

So, what is the real opinion of Granta owners about the capacity and ease of use of the luggage section, because its volume in liters is quite impressive. The Internet is replete with an incredible variety of photographs posted by the owners. Sometimes the Lada Granta liftback can plunge you into amazement - how much useful luggage its luggage compartment is ready to accommodate. However, in reality, not everything becomes as rosy with the amount of space in the trunk as it is positioned in advertising.

The rear seats have the only ability to fold completely when the front seats are moved close to the instrument panel. The inconvenience is that the rear headrest requires preliminary dismantling before folding. The top shelf in the luggage compartment can be removed without any extra effort, which is very convenient when transporting large items. Due to this action, space will not be added, but the luggage will not rest against anything. Niches on the right and left sides are suitable for storing medium-sized bags or a set of essential tools in case of an unexpected breakdown.

Above these technological recesses there are hangers designed for bags, which eliminates the need to clutter the rear seats with them. There is a light above the left niche, but it turns on when the low beam of the head optics is activated. An excellent solution for cloudy weather or dark periods of the day, however, the inconvenience is that you may forget to turn on the headlights beforehand.

Under the luggage mat you can find a full-fledged spare wheel, to which the manufacturer has added traditional attributes: a jack and a wheel wrench. There is enough space in the niche to accommodate a spare wheel with a large radius (if you wish to install 16-inch wheels). There is still room for the tool. This is easy to verify, you just have to look at the photo.

The luggage compartment mat in the LADA Granta liftback made of rubber has not become popular among owners. The quality of the material is a little worse than expected, and it will not be possible to stick a traditional “motorist’s bag” to its surface with Velcro. The option of a rug with a pile covering will not be practical, since it is subject to the risk of contamination from spills of various liquids or dirt.

The rubber cover in the trunk can be easily placed on top of the standard one.
