The disadvantage of the first front-wheel drive VAZ cars was the poor performance of the interior heater. Until the engine warms up to operating temperature, the cabin is cold. This is due to the design of the small circulation circuit, into which coolant enters in small quantities. The problem is solved by installing an additional electric pump from GAZelle.

- four-pin relay;
- multi-core wires and a two-pin connector;
- fuse socket;
- hoses and clamps for connection to the cooling system;

The pump is placed on a homemade bracket, screwed to one of the bolts on the mounting flange of the gearbox. The antifreeze is first drained and the thermostat is removed, which will interfere with the installation of an additional pump. This is especially true for the injection model VAZ 21099.

Sometimes the pneumatic drive of the damper on the secondary chamber refuses to work normally.
Troubles also arise with a worn out diaphragm in the forced idle economizer system. If for some reason dirt gets into the mechanism or the adjustments are broken, then the second chamber may not open at all, or it may open, but with a serious delay. This leads to a significant decrease in dynamics. Power is lost, the maximum speed of the car decreases, the engine is unstable at high and medium speeds. Despite all this, the DAAZ-1107010 “Ozone” carburetor produces good dynamic characteristics with a fuel consumption of about seven liters per 100 kilometers. Naturally, the device must be constantly monitored and maintained. To avoid contaminating the internal chambers, it is recommended to periodically clean them. A special carburetor cleaner is used. This chemical is sold in aerosol cans.
Preparing to modernize the engine power system
In order to install two carburetors, it is recommended to initially drain the antifreeze through the fuel heater. After this, it is necessary to dismantle part of the fuel system. To remove the intake manifold, you need to unscrew the five bolts that secure it.
Connecting the carburetor to the manifold is not done on the car. This type of work is carried out in good lighting. Having connected the carburetors one by one to the intake manifolds of the Oka, you need to open both chambers and check the condition of the joint. This creates strong resistance to air flow, which significantly reduces the effect of installing two carburetors.
"Solex"
These mechanisms are no less popular. DAAZ-21053 is especially popular. It is also manufactured under license. This carburetor has good dynamic characteristics and is also economical. This is a good solution if you need a carburetor for the “Six”. The design of the Solex is fundamentally different from all previous devices from the Dmitrov Automotive Unit, equipped with a fuel return supply system.
With this solution, gasoline can be returned to the car's gas tank. By using a reverse fuel supply system, it is possible to save up to 400-800 grams of fuel per hundred kilometers. Some versions of Solex can be supplemented with auxiliary electronic systems. Among them is an idle system with the ability to adjust using an electric valve. Also found on export models. In the CIS countries, a model with an electric idle air valve was widespread. This two-chamber carburetor turned out to be quite difficult to operate.
The channels are made narrow and often clogged. If the device is not maintained, then the idle system begins to malfunction first, and then all other components. In terms of fuel consumption, the Solex on the VAZ-2106 consumed from 6 to 10 liters when driving in quiet mode. In terms of dynamic characteristics, the unit is second only to the early Weber. If you do preventive carburetor repairs in a timely manner, Solex will not cause any special problems.
Procedure
Remove the old carburetor and manifold and set it aside. Now comes the responsible part. We put both carburetors on the manifolds and open the dampers. You need to look inside and see if the edges of the collector are sticking out. If you chose Solex, then there shouldn’t be such a problem, but it wouldn’t hurt to check. But Weber has exactly the same problem.
We take a drill, load the cutter and grind the edges. Every time you need to try on the carburetor and check it. However, the work is not difficult, but it requires patience and accuracy.
It is advisable to remove the cylinder head, but it can be done without removing it, it just won’t be very convenient - you need to fit the manifolds to the block and make the necessary slots for the threads. It's not difficult either. Everything is customized in place. The central fastener can be made from 4 mm sheet steel.
We install the manifolds on the cylinder head and connect the heating with the vacuum brake booster. If you have 2101, then these holes can be plugged.
If the carburetors are new, then there should be no problems, if not, then we take them to the carburetor for a rebuild and the same adjustment. To do this, the quality and quantity screws must be unscrewed at the same speed. The next stage is merging the gas and choke pedals. With Solex, usually there are no problems - you only need a cable, but Weber will be a creative process for you. The main thing is synchronicity of work.
How to choose a carburetor and what to install on a VAZ-2106?
Those who like to make improvements to classic models from AvtoVAZ and simply owners who want to improve the performance characteristics of the car most often choose Solex. Models used are DAAZ-21083. Installing them on classic models is impossible without significant modifications.
When thinking about which carburetor is best to install on a VAZ-2106, you need to take into account the engine size. For 1.3-liter units, the DAAZ-2018 option is perfect. For engines with a volume of 1.6 liters, the best choice is DAAZ-21083. The differences between these two models are in the cross-sectional diameter of the diffusers, as well as in the sizes of the fuel and air jets. If you install this carburetor as it is, then at speeds close to 4 thousand, the air emission speed can reach supersonic, which is not acceptable. But this will not affect acceleration in any way. It is necessary to enlarge the diffusers on the first and second chambers and install other jets. After this, fuel consumption will be the same as on 21053, and the dynamics will be better than on 21073. For VAZ-2106 cars, the price of such a carburetor will be about five thousand rubles.

This issue must be approached with all responsibility, understanding that instability of the fuel level will lead to a lean mixture.

- a set of small open-end wrenches - 8, 10, 13 mm;

Idle speed adjustment
The second setting of the VAZ-2109 carburetor is idle speed, it can be partial or full. The first is for minor speed adjustments, the second is for adjusting the amount of air (setting CO emissions in the exhaust gases).
Partial adjustment is performed using the air-fuel mixture “amount” screw. This screw sets the opening angle of the throttle valves, which ensures that the air-fuel mixture enters the cylinders when the accelerator pedal is released. The “quantity” screw rests on the throttle valve control lever and when screwed in, it pushes the lever, causing the valves to open slightly.
Partial idle adjustment is performed with a warm engine and creating a load on the vehicle's on-board network by turning on the high beam headlights and the interior heater at full power. The adjustment is carried out with the engine running by screwing in/unscrewing the “quantity” screw until the optimal idle speed is established, which for the VAZ-2109 is 800-900 rpm (this can be tracked using a standard or plug-in tachometer).
If it is not possible to set the required speed or the motor operates unstably at it, a complete adjustment is made, which is made by two screws - “quantity” and “quality”.
The algorithm for this adjustment consists of the following stages:
- Warm up the engine and then turn it off;
- We find the quality screw (it may be closed with a plug that will have to be removed), screw it in until it stops, and then unscrew it 3-4 full turns;
- We start the engine, turn on electrical consumers (lighting and stove) to create a load in the on-board network;
- By rotating the “quantity” screw, we achieve 700-800 rpm on the tachometer;
- By turning the “quality” screw, we set the maximum possible speed (they will increase to a certain level, and then stop. The moment the speed increase stops is considered the maximum);
- We set the “quantity” screw to 900 rpm;
- Using the “quality” screw we lower them to 800 rpm;
- We slowly tighten the “quality” screw until interruptions appear in the operation of the power plant, after which we unscrew it back 1 turn;
- We adjust the speed with the “quantity” screw, bringing it to a normal value - 800-900 rpm;
After the adjustment operations, we check that they were carried out correctly. This is done by sharply pressing the gas pedal and then quickly releasing it. With a properly configured carburetor, the engine should respond quickly to pressure, without any failures or hesitations. And after releasing the pedal, the speed will drop to the idle level, without sags or instability of the engine.
