, thermal valve clearances on Daewoo Matiz 0.8 must be checked every 30,000 km , and if there is a violation, adjustments must be made on at least one cylinder. the cylinder head has been repaired or gas equipment is installed on the car.
In this photo report we will show how to quickly and without removing the timing case adjust the thermal valve clearances on a 0.8 liter Daewoo Matiz .
We adjust the valve clearances of Daewoo Matiz
The adjustment is carried out with the engine cooled down to 20 degrees. If the temperature is higher or lower, it is necessary to adjust the gap size plus or minus one hundredth.
Table of clearance corrections taking into account temperature
First, let's jack up the car and remove the front right wheel and mudguard, install a stand under the hub and lower the jack.
Open the hood and remove the air filter along with the housing and the entire pipeline assembly.
Now it’s the turn of the ignition module. We disconnect the high-voltage wires and the terminal block on the back of the module. After this, unscrew the three bolts securing the module and remove it.
Disconnect the vacuum hoses and remove the throttle cable. Now remove the connector from the sensor and the pipe behind it. They will also interfere.
We remove the breather hose and at the same time check its integrity. Especially in the place indicated by the arrow. If a crack forms there, we will get an uncontrolled air leak at the inlet.
Remove the timing cover. First of all, unscrew the two distant bolts on the right side. To do this we use a cardan and an extension. Next, unscrew the remaining four
Be careful not to tear off the splines. 5mm hex bolts
Now that the cover is removed, we will set the piston of the first cylinder to the top dead center of the compression stroke by rotating the crankshaft. To do this, we use a 17mm socket, an extension and a wrench. This is why we removed the wheel and mudguard.
To set the first cylinder to TDC, it is not necessary to remove the timing belt cover and align it to the marks. Although, this method has a right to exist and is considered correct.
You can go this way and after removing the timing belt cover, set marks on the crankshaft and camshaft pulley. However, in the case when we have no complaints about the timing belt, we can simplify our life
However, it is much easier and faster to set the piston of the first cylinder to TDC, guided by the position of the piston and the camshaft cam. To do this, turn the crankshaft clockwise (!) until the piston reaches TDC and the camshaft cam points straight down.
In this position we will be able to adjust both valves on the first cylinder, as well as the inlet of the second and the exhaust of the third.
First, let's check the existing gaps with feeler gauges. The feeler gauge should not fit freely between the valve and the rocker arm, but it should not fit too tightly either. The dipstick should slide with little effort.
If there is a need to adjust the gap, take a 12-mm spanner and tear off the fixing nut with it. Without removing the key, use a flat screwdriver to set the required gap by rotating the rocker arm pusher. Having achieved the desired gap, hold the screwdriver in this position and tighten the locknut. We check the gap again, and then tighten the nut with a force of 20 N∙m. We do the same with the remaining free valves.
Now rotate the crankshaft 360 degrees. At this time, the camshaft will rotate 180 degrees. In this position, we adjust both valves of the third (fourth cylinder on a liter engine), as well as the second exhaust (and third intake cylinder on a liter engine).
After adjustment, tighten the locknuts again and check the clearances on each valve again. When assembling, carefully wipe all mating surfaces with a rag, and tighten the valve cover crosswise, starting from the center, with a torque of 10 N∙m. We carry out the assembly in the reverse order.
Adjusting Daewoo Matiz valves every 20,000 km
Motor oil for the daewoo matiz engine
Daewoo Matiz is bought because it is compact, economical and inexpensive. Costs for spare parts are also not particularly high. But there is such a feature that it is necessary to adjust the valves of the Daewoo Matiz, because the engine used in this car does not have hydraulic compensators, so it has to be done every 20,000 km. make adjustments. It is also necessary to monitor the timing mechanism in general.
Why is valve adjustment necessary on Daewoo Matiz?
After a certain mileage, the gaps between the rocker arm and the valve stem begin to change from the original ones, and therefore require adjustment. According to the regulations, it is necessary to adjust the gaps on Daewoo Matiz after 20,000 km. mileage
Reasons why valve adjustment of Daewoo Matiz is necessary:
- the cylinders are not completely filled with a combustible mixture or air;
- when the gap becomes smaller, the valve in the seat does not sit tightly and compression worsens;
- if the gap has increased, this means that the gases leave the cylinders worse, and the mixture does not burn completely.
Also, if the clearances are not adjusted, the valve stems and other parts will wear out faster, carbon deposits will appear, and in general, the engine will fail faster and will have to be overhauled.
How to understand that it’s time to adjust the valves on the Daewoo Matiz:
- the engine power became less, that is, the car began to accelerate more slowly;
- there was a knock in the timing mechanism;
- the engine began to work intermittently;
- there were pops.
If all this appears, then it’s time to work on the car.
Preparing to adjust the gaps
Any adjustment must be made on a cold engine. For work you will need: open-end wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers, sockets, imbus wrenches, measuring probes. Next, you need to disconnect the negative on the battery and get to the timing mechanism.
Then you need to remove the air filter housing, unscrew the clamps, bolts, etc. Next you need to remove the ignition coil block, because without this it will be impossible to adjust the valve clearances of the Daewoo Matiz. By the way, the spark plugs in the car must be of high quality so as not to ruin the engine, it is better to immediately take the original, how to distinguish original spark plugs from fake ones. To remove the coil block, you also need to loosen the harnesses, disconnect the wires, unscrew the bolts using a socket, remove everything that is in the way and dismantle the ignition coil block. After this, you need to proceed to removing the throttle assembly.
To do this, you also need to do a lot of physical movements: disconnect from the air duct, then remove the air duct, disconnect the wires from the XX regulator, other wires also need to be disconnected. Next, you need to drain the coolant from the tank. After this, you need to disconnect the throttle block pipes. Unscrew the bolts and remove the throttle assembly completely.
Next, you can remove the timing cover; by the way, the Matiz timing belt uses a belt. But it’s not so easy, to remove this cover you need to remove the fender liner from the right arch and unscrew 4 bolts.
Next, you need to do the following before adjusting the valves: you need to remove the release hoses, disconnect the harnesses from the bracket, unscrew the bolts that secure the cylinder head cover, and then you need to finally remove it.
The Daewoo Matiz valve adjustment itself
For intake valves, the gap should be in the range of 0.13-0.17 mm, for exhaust valves - 0.3-0.34 mm. Therefore, you need to take a feeler gauge with a suitable size so that it moves in the gap with little effort.
The adjustment itself goes like this: you need to take the head at “17” and turn the crankshaft clockwise until the mark on the pulley matches 0 on the lower timing belt cover. It is in this position that the gaps in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd cylinders must be adjusted.
If deviations from the required dimensions suddenly begin to appear, then in this case you need to loosen the lock nut with a 12mm wrench, and on the other hand you need to hold the adjusting screw with a slotted screwdriver. Next, you need to insert the feeler gauge into the gap and adjust the engine valve mechanism by tightening or unscrewing the adjusting screw with using a screwdriver. And so twist with a screwdriver until you achieve the desired size. Then, when the gaps are set, you need to tighten the lock nut, while holding the screw with a screwdriver so that it does not turn.
After all the adjustment work has been done, you need to take it and put everything back together in the reverse order.
The following video shows more clearly how the Daewoo Matiz valves are adjusted:
Why adjust valves on Daewoo Matiz
The valves in the cylinder head are required to tightly close the combustion chamber during the compression stroke. However, this does not always happen. In the case when at least one of the valves, intake or exhaust, performs its job carelessly, the edge of the valve does not fit tightly to the seat, and gases heated to enormous temperatures break through either into the intake or exhaust manifold.
This threatens, at a minimum, loss of compression and deterioration in filling the cylinders with the fuel-air mixture. Which in turn causes a drop in power, complicates starting and negatively affects fuel consumption. But that's not all. Hot gases tend to destroy the edge first, and then, after microcracks appear, cause complete destruction of the working part of the valve.
If the valve does not open completely, when the thermal gap is too large, then in addition to poor filling of the cylinder with the mixture, poor ventilation of the combustion chamber occurs between compression strokes. And this is fraught with inefficient combustion of the mixture, which also leads to a drop in power and high consumption.
In addition, gases stimulate the formation of a large amount of carbon deposits on the entire gas distribution mechanism - springs, valve guides, rocker arms, which leads to wear of the valve stems and greatly disrupts the operation of the timing belt.
This is why thermal clearances between the valve lifters and valve ends are critically important, since when heated, all metals expand by a certain amount. This is the amount we leave the gaps between the valve and the rocker arm.
The manufacturer strongly recommends adjusting valves on Daewoo Matiz at least once every 20 thousand km . The dimensions of the gaps (a) are as follows:
- For the intake valve, the clearance is 0.15 mm.
- For the exhaust valve - 0.32 mm , since the exhaust valve warms up much more than the intake valve.
Preparatory stage of work
Popular reviews from daewoo matiz owners with photos
It is important to know that valves need to be adjusted only with a cold engine.
The tools should include:
- Wrenches (also known as open-end wrenches) - set;
- Screwdriver set;
- Set of socket heads;
- Imbus keys (set);
- Test leads;
- Pliers.
To get to the valves, some preparatory work needs to be done.
It is necessary to disconnect the battery, observing safety precautions. To do this, disconnect the negative wire from the battery.
Next, remove the air filter.
To do this we do the following:
- The air duct is secured with a special clamp, loosen it with a flat screwdriver.
- We take the filter pipe, which is the air one, and disconnect it from the air duct.
- Remove the hose from the air filter housing.
- If your car’s engine has a volume of 0.8 liters, then you need to separate the harness block of the electronic internal combustion engine control system from the temperature temperature.
- The filter housing is attached to the air intake with three bolts. Use a socket head to “10” to unscrew them.
- We slightly raise the air intake and voice box and remove the pins from the special rubber pads.
- Dismantle the unit.
Now remove the ignition module.
The procedure for adjusting the valves of the UAZ 469 diagram
Adjusting the valves on the Daewoo Matiz without this procedure is almost impossible.
By doing this we do the following:
- We find the fastener and press it away from the engine control system harness block.
- The coils are attached to the cylinder head cover holder; to remove them, you will need to unscrew three bolts with a “tenth” socket head.
- Remove the ignition module.
- Now remove the throttle assembly.
This action is also carried out in several stages:
- Disconnect the crankcase ventilation tube from the air duct tube.
- Also, remove the hose leading to the air filter, and then remove the air duct.
- It is necessary to disconnect all wires from the idle air control regulator. This applies to the 0.8 liter Matiz engine.
- The throttle valve has a position sensor. We also disconnect the wires leading to it.
- Antifreeze must be drained to the minimum mark.
- On the hoses that supply coolant to the throttle block, it is necessary to compress the clamps with pliers and disconnect them.
- The throttle body and intake manifold have four mounting bolts. They need to be unscrewed using a hex key.
- Now we can remove the entire throttle assembly.
One last thing to do right before making adjustments.
When the work is completed, remove the timing belt cover. To do this, you need to remove the front arch liner on the right and 4 mounting bolts.
Now there are a few more simple operations to be done:
- A vacuum hose will be pulled to the vacuum booster. It is necessary, using pliers, to clamp the clamp from the edges and move it along the hose.
- Remove the vacuum supply.
- Remove the ventilating crankcase inlet from the cylinder head cover fitting.
- The inlet pipe holder screw must be unscrewed using a hex wrench set to “5”.
- It is necessary to compress the petals of the fixing element of the wires located in the control system of the power unit using a screwdriver. Disconnect the harness from the holder.
- Using a ten-point socket, unscrew the bolt that secures the connecting hose bracket and move it to the side.
- Unscrew the bolts (8 pieces) that secure the cylinder head with the “fifth” hex key and disconnect it.
How to adjust valves
Ignition switch daewoo nexia and matiz: replacement of assembly, contact group and cylinder
Now you can proceed directly to the adjustment, it is done in a special way, the procedure is described in detail in the official Matiz manual. Using a wrench (you can also lift the front of the car, engage 5th gear and spin the wheels by hand), focusing on the mark on the crankshaft, align it with the number 0. In this position, check the clearances:
- Both valves of the first cylinder;
- Only the intake valve of the second;
- Only the exhaust valve of the third.
Standard values that Daewoo Matiz clearances should have: 0.15 for intake and 0.32 for exhaust. These values can be set with an error of 0.02, which is important since a 0.32 probe is almost impossible to find; there are only 0.3 probes. The clearance is checked only between the nut and the valve stem. If it does not correspond to the values, you need to adjust it by slightly turning the lock nut while holding the screw. Then you need to rotate the crankshaft exactly 360 degrees (again focusing on the marks) and adjust the two remaining valves.
There is another adjustment method that is simpler and does not require removing the timing cover. But this method is not according to instructions, it is less accurate and can only be done at your own risk. In this case, you need to rotate the crankshaft and look at the valve cams; the maximum clearance will be when the cam is pointing down, in this position the adjustment is made.
Compact subcompact Daewoo Matiz cars are known primarily for their efficiency, which means low operating costs. But in order for the technical potential of the machine to remain at the proper level, it is necessary to periodically inspect and adjust the settings of the GDS mechanisms.

How to know when it's time to adjust the valves
In addition to the manufacturer's recommendation that the clearances are adjusted every 20,000 km, there are a number of signs that directly indicate the need for adjustment. It is logical that adjustment is needed in the case when the cylinder head was repaired. There are a number of other symptoms:
- A characteristic clicking, chattering sound coming from under the hood. An experienced mechanic can easily determine just by sound that the valves need adjustment.
- Gradual decrease in power. The thermal gap is not lost instantly. Therefore, determining the loss of traction and dynamics can sometimes be difficult. However, if the power drops critically against the background of other symptoms, we can talk about a loss of nominal valve clearances.
- Engine overheating. Since some of the hot gases enter the manifolds, the engine can become very hot even at low loads.
- As you gain speed, you may experience noticeable popping noises both at the intake and exhaust.
- Incorrect engine operation, difficult starting, unstable idle speed.
If you have even these symptoms, you should already think about checking the valve clearances.
When to adjust valves
According to the regulations on Matiz, adjustments must be carried out every 20,000 kilometers. But many people delay this process for up to 30,000 km or more, which should not be done. In addition to the actual mileage, engine malfunctions may also indicate the need to carry out this procedure.
A characteristic sign that the gaps need to be adjusted is always a constant knocking noise from under the hood. This means that the gaps are too large even when the engine is hot and the valve knocks during operation. But there is also the opposite situation, when the gap is too small, then the engine begins to “trouble.” Although, in the case of the Daewoo Matiz, the engine “doubles”, since it has only three cylinders.
For inexperienced motorists, it is worth clarifying that “triple” (or “doubling” in our case) means that one of the cylinders is not working. This can be heard both from the changed sound of the engine and from a clearly noticeable drop in power.
What are engine valves and why should you adjust them?
Engine Valves A conventional four-stroke internal combustion engine consists of many systems, but its main part is the cylinder block and the gas distribution mechanism. Fuel is injected into the cylinder, it is ignited, and rapid combustion puts pressure on the piston.
Fuel (more precisely, a ready-made fuel-air mixture) enters the cylinder through an opening. There is another hole through which exhaust gases exit the cylinder. And these holes are closed by valves - inlet and outlet.
But during operation, the engine heats up to enormous temperatures of hundreds of degrees and, as we know from a school physics course, thermal expansion occurs - the valves become a little larger. Therefore, the valves of a cold engine must have clearances that are clearly defined by the manufacturer, so that during operation, when expanding, the valve does not get stuck and tightly closes the holes without gaps.
Typical faults of the F8CV engine
The Matiz 0.8 engine has a good service life - with careful operation and timely maintenance, the service life of the internal combustion engine is on average 200 thousand km. But the engine has its own characteristic diseases, the most frequent breakdowns. The first Daewoo Matiz cars had a distributor installed, and this part in the ignition system was not particularly reliable. Often, due to a faulty distributor, the engine stopped starting, and since the distributor was irreparable, it had to be replaced. Since 2008, F8CV engines have gone without distributors - the ignition is controlled by the ECU, so problems with starting the internal combustion engine have decreased. Despite the fairly high reliability, the Daewoo Matiz 0.8 engine often:

Rear caliper repair
The car won't start: the main reasons
- the crankshaft is knocking;
- the piston partitions under the piston rings burst;
- The cylinder head fails.
But all these serious breakdowns occur solely through the fault of car owners. The crankshaft knocks mainly due to overloads and the use of low-quality engine oil. For some reason, drivers believe that if the engine is “frivolous”, then there is no need to properly maintain it. The partitions under the piston rings on the pistons always burst due to overheating, for the same reason cracks appear in the combustion chambers of the cylinder head.
The main diseases of F8CV often manifest themselves not so much in the motor itself, but in the attachments. The most painful place here is the generator; diode bridge failure occurs especially often. Parts most often fail in conditions of high humidity; in other cases, the generator may require repairs already at 50 thousand km.
The starter on the Matiz lasts longer; it may require repairs after about 80-100 thousand km. However, on a Korean car, repairing attachments is not always advisable - the price of spare parts is low, and in some cases it is more profitable to completely replace the entire assembly than to waste time on repairing the same generator or starter.
What is needed to adjust the gap
The tools you will need are a set of bits, sockets, wrenches, extensions and cardans, and a set of screwdrivers. You also need two probes for 0.15 mm and 0.32 mm. Since it is difficult to find a 0.32 probe, we will use two probes - 0.3 and 0.02 mm together. If the valve cover is secured with factory bolts, a 5mm hex is required.
This set of probes is enough for any adjustment
By the way, about the valve cover bolts (M6x1, length 35 mm). They are extremely unreliable, and the manufacturer recommends replacing them every time the cover is removed. The fact is that the hexagonal hole often licks off when reused. So, if they are on sale, it is better to buy new original ones.
Original Korean bolt 94500741 with non-stick treatment. It is highly recommended to replace them every time the valve cover is removed.
The catalog number of the original bolt is 94500741-GM, their price is about 15 hryvnia per piece. As a last resort, you can use camshaft bed bolts from VAZ 2110-2112, but using regular hex head bolts is highly undesirable.
Many would be happy to save on the valve cover gasket. It is also disposable, even if it still looks decent. The fact is that over the years of use, the gasket shrinks, dries out, and loses elasticity. If there is no particular desire to observe oil streaks on the cylinder block, it is better to replace the gasket. The following options are recommended:
- PARTS-MALL P1G-C007, price 30 hryvnia;
- CORTECO 440063P, price 80 hryvnia;
- BGA BGSILC, same price;
- ELRING 136.271, about 100 hryvnia;
- VICTOR REINZ 71-53137-00, price 125 hryvnia, one of the best options;
- NIPPARTS J1220907, price 200 hryvnia;
- GLASER X83283-01, about 250 hryvnia.
We will also need a jack and, of course, a wheel wrench. If you have all this at hand, you can start adjusting.
Final preparations for adjusting Daewoo Matiz valves
After implementing the steps described above, you need to remove the upper timing belt drive cover. To do this, remove the fender liner from the right front wheel arch and unscrew the four bolts securing the cover with a “10” wrench.
Before directly adjusting the Daewoo Matiz valves, it remains to perform several simple technological operations:
- Using pliers, compress the edges of the hose clamp for supplying vacuum to the vacuum booster and slide it further along the hose.
- Remove the vacuum hose.
- Remove the crankcase ventilation hose from the cylinder head cover fitting.
- Using a hexagon to “5”, unscrew the screw of the intake manifold bracket.
- Squeeze the tabs of the engine control system wire clamp with a screwdriver and disconnect the harness from the bracket.
- Unscrew the connecting pipe bracket mounting bolt with a “10” head and move it to the side.
- Unscrew the 8 bolts securing the cylinder head cover using a hexagon to “5” and dismantle it.

Adjusting the matiz valve, possible problems and solutions
Valves in the engine of any car need to be adjusted and Daewoo Matiz is no exception. On any engine, this process has its own characteristics and difficulties. Fortunately, on the standard 0.8 Matiz engine everything is done quite easily and you can do it on your own.
What are engine valves and why should you adjust them?
Engine valves
A conventional four-stroke internal combustion engine consists of many systems, but its main part is the cylinder block and the gas distribution mechanism.

When to adjust valves
According to the regulations on Matiz, adjustments must be carried out every 20,000 kilometers. But many people delay this process for up to 30,000 km or more, which should not be done. In addition to the actual mileage, engine malfunctions may also indicate the need to carry out this procedure.

For inexperienced motorists, it is worth clarifying that “triple” (or “doubling” in our case) means that one of the cylinders is not working. This can be heard both from the changed sound of the engine and from a clearly noticeable drop in power.
Preparing for adjustment
To set the gaps yourself, you do not need to be an experienced auto mechanic.
You just need instructions (this one, but an official paper one wouldn’t hurt), a set of tools (hexagons, screwdrivers, wrenches and a set of special flat probes).
All work is carried out only on completely cold engines. The first step is to remove the cover of the Matiz cylinder block. To do this, you just need to disconnect the ventilation hose and unscrew several bolts using a 5mm hexagon. This will probably not be so easy, the bolts may become clogged and “stick”, in which case you will have to use more force or use the miracle product WD-40. After removing the cover, check the rubber gasket at the same time; if it is damaged, it’s time to replace it. After this, you will also have to remove the timing cover.
How to adjust valves
Now you can proceed directly to the adjustment, it is done in a special way, the procedure is described in detail in the official Matiz manual. Using a wrench (you can also lift the front of the car, engage 5th gear and spin the wheels by hand), focusing on the mark on the crankshaft, align it with the number 0. In this position, check the clearances:
- Both valves of the first cylinder;
- Only the intake valve of the second;

Correction of timing valve clearances on Daewoo Matiz
3292 26
valve adjustmentCompact small cars Daewoo Matiz are known primarily for their efficiency, which means low operating costs. But in order for the technical potential of the machine to remain at the proper level, it is necessary to periodically inspect and adjust the settings of the GDS mechanisms.
When is valve adjustment needed on a Daewoo Matiz car and why?
Almost any engine, after a certain number of engine hours or kilometers traveled, requires adjustment of the clearances between the rocker arm and the valve stem. The maintenance schedule for the Matiz internal combustion engine provides for such activities to be carried out every 20,000 km.
According to experts, valve adjustment on Daewoo Matiz is necessary due to the following factors:
- the increased thermal gap causes a decrease in the lift height, and hence the flow area, as a result of which the quality of filling the cylinder with a combustible mixture or air decreases;
- the reduced gap contributes to the violation of the tightness of the valve seat in the seat, which directly affects the compression and causes the chamfer of the part to burn;
- An increase in the gap in the mechanisms leads to a deterioration in the cleaning of gases from the cylinders and makes the combustion process of the mixture incomplete.
Violation of technological dimensions in timing mechanisms leads to wear of valve stems and seats of parts. Carbon deposits and associated malfunctions of spring structures lead to disruption of the operating cycle of the power plant.
The presence of the following signs will help determine the moment when valve adjustment on a Daewoo Matiz car is necessary:
- power drop;
- loud knocking in the timing belt area;
- interruptions in the operation of the internal combustion engine;
- periodic popping noises in the intake or exhaust tract.
The presence of the listed symptoms requires immediate intervention, otherwise failures associated with replacing timing belt units will require significant financial investments.
Preparatory work
First of all, you need to remember that all adjustment work is performed on a cold engine. Now we complete the set of necessary tools:
- set of open-end wrenches;
- screwdriver set;
- set of heads;
- pliers;
- set of imbus keys;
- set of measuring probes.
The procedure for adjusting the gaps requires a number of preparatory measures, because it will not be possible to get to the timing components so easily. First of all, you should disconnect the negative cable of the battery.
Removing the air filter housing
The process consists of several transitions:
- Using a flathead screwdriver, loosen the air duct clamp.
- Disconnect the filter pipe from the air duct.
- For the Matiz 0.8 l internal combustion engine, disconnect the harness block of the engine control system and the air temperature sensor, remove the hose from the filter housing.
- Using a 10mm socket, unscrew the three bolts securing the filter housing to the air intake and remove them.
- Lift the housing with the air intake and resonator and remove the two pins from the rubber pads.
- Dismantle the unit.
How to adjust valves on a Matiz
Since the mileage had already exceeded 10 thousand km, it was decided to check the thermal clearances of the valves. At night the car thawed in the garage, in the morning the temperature was just about 20*C (it is recommended to adjust at this temperature). The procedure is simple and quite fast.
I removed the ignition coil - 3 bolts, the timing belt casing - 4 bolts, disconnected the hoses of the vacuum brake booster and crankcase ventilation, unscrewed the valve cover - 6 bolts for the 5-point head, jacked up the right front wheel, and put it in 5th gear. We remove the wheel and, rotating the wheel, look at the marks of the camshaft timing pulley.
