Car : VAZ-2112. Asks : Baranov Ivan. The essence of the question : The VAZ-2112 car does not start when cold? What to do?
Good afternoon, I have a VAZ-2112 produced in 2005, with a 16-valve engine. And not so long ago, when it was cold, I began to experience difficulty starting it. At the same time, it may simply not start, and sometimes it starts with difficulty. Tell me what could be the matter?
Won't start in the morning? Let's fix it!
There can be many reasons why a motorist finds it difficult to start the engine after parking overnight. This also applies to those situations where the car was started in the evening without any defects, but in the very morning the problems, as they say, are obvious.
The following two tabs change content below.
- About the expert:
All my life I have been surrounded by cars! First, in the village, already in the first grade, I was rushing around on a tractor through the fields, then there was JAVA, then a penny. Now I am a third-year student at the Polytechnic Faculty of Automotive Engineering. I work part-time as a car mechanic and help repair cars for all my friends.
In this article, we will look at what are the main reasons that influence the difficulty of starting a VAZ-2112 with a cold engine and how you can quickly solve them.
The video above shows a standard example of how a VAZ-2112 cannot start when cold.
Insufficient engine oil pressure
ALSO, THE CAUSE OF DIFFICULT STARTING OF THE ENGINE WHEN COLD MAY BE INSUFFICIENT OIL PRESSURE IN THE SYSTEM. IN THIS CASE, THE LOW OIL PRESSURE ALARM SHOULD HAVE WARNED YOU ABOUT THIS DURING A PREVIOUS TRIP. MORE ABOUT NORMAL OIL PRESSURE IN THIS ARTICLE!
This reason typically appears on a cold engine, since it is much more difficult for thickened oil with insufficient pressure to reach the main components and assemblies of the engine. In this case, you may notice a low oil pressure warning light. However, as follows from practice, such problems do not occur often.
As you can see, problems with starting the engine when cold are not uncommon and there can be various reasons for this. They should be solved from least difficult to most difficult. Since even a minor problem in a small unit can prevent the entire engine from starting.
Doesn't start well and boils
In this case, the reason lies in the coolant. Check its level. If necessary, dilute with distilled water. However, there is no need to mix different brands of antifreeze. It may foam, which will further accelerate overheating.
The thermostat may also break. The VAZ 2110 8-valve injector is equipped with a two-piston element. It's very easy to check. To do this, you need a burner and a pan of water. Place the thermostat in the container and wait for the water to boil. If bubbles appear and the piston does not move, it means the element is faulty. The temperature at which it should operate is indicated on the metal body of the thermostat. The element cannot be repaired - it must only be replaced. As a result, the system is unable to regulate the operating temperature of the antifreeze. The coolant moves only in a small circle. But the car may start poorly (every once in a while) due to an incorrectly adjusted ignition. Most "ten" cars have a distributor ignition. Here you need to set the correct lead angle.
What could happen to electrical equipment?
If there is something to burn in the working cylinders, then you need to look for what will make the mixture burn
This means that you need to pay attention to the car's ignition system. This could be the ignition distributor, high-voltage coil and wires, spark plugs
It doesn’t happen that all devices fail at the same time, so we should talk about them separately.
We will assume that the distributor is installed correctly; in this case, a failure may occur through a breakdown of the cover or slider, or a failure of the Hall sensor. However, most often the cause is poor contact in the power connector of the ignition distributor. An ignition module or coils that do not produce high voltage to produce a spark at the spark plugs can create problems.
Injectors work in conjunction with ignition modules, of which there are usually two per engine. One ensures the operation of cylinders 1 and 4, and the second - cylinders 2 and 3. In these systems, the electronic control unit, which generates control pulses for all systems, including the ignition, may be problematic. This block can only be checked by replacing it. The same can be done with ignition modules.
Sometimes the fault may come from the high voltage coil. it does not generate voltage that can create a spark to ignite the air-fuel mixture. You can check its operation if you unscrew the spark plug from the cylinder and, together with the high-voltage wire, ensure its contact with the engine ground. At this time, you need to crank the starter and watch the spark plug. The absence of a spark confirms that the ignition coil is faulty.
It is impossible not to dwell on such elements of ignition systems as spark plugs. They are the ones who ignite the combustible mixture in the working cylinders of the engine. During their operation, the metal parts of their electrodes burn out, after which the gap increases, starting the motor becomes more difficult, or even becomes impossible. Check the condition of the spark plugs regularly, especially their gap. then problems can be avoided.
You can continue to review situations when the starter turns, but the VAZ 2110, 2112, 2114 does not start. It is simply impossible to take into account absolutely all cases, but to avoid such situations, carry out routine maintenance of the machine in a timely manner, use only high-quality operating fluids.
VAZ 2110 won't start, the injector turns the starter
Probably every motorist has encountered a situation in which your car does not start, and there is little pleasure in it, especially if it happens on the road.
To begin with, it is recommended to conduct a general diagnostic of the engine and try to identify the malfunction. In this situation, in order to determine the malfunction of the VAZ 2110 power plant, it is recommended to check all operating systems of the engine, proceeding from general to specific.
Ignition coil
If there is electricity in the circuit, it is the coil that almost completely fails.
There is no point in repairing it, so the unit must be replaced with a working one. As practice shows, problems with the winding often arise due to poor contact of the electrical wiring connected to it. Often the reason for this is banal pollution.
When the above manipulations do not bring results, it is necessary to check the functionality of the switch or distributor in the engine (depending on the type of power plant - injector or carburetor).
To do this, remove the protective cover and:
- check the presence of current with a tester;
- clean contacts from dirt;
- make sure they are held securely.
All other wiring problems must be repaired only at a service center. The thing is that only a few car enthusiasts are able to carry out diagnostics on their own. In addition, this requires special professional equipment.
Incorrect operation of electrical equipment
Most often, the cause of the malfunction lies in incorrect operation of electrical equipment. This is one of the most common problems associated with failure to start. The first thing to check is the operation of the electronic control unit. It looks like this:
Often water simply gets into contact groups and other components of the ignition system. This leads to oxidation of contacts and lack of voltage supply.
Problems may be related to the fuel pump relay, as well as the starter. You should not forget about checking contacts and various connections. Often the problem lies in the “ground” - zero is simply missing in the wiring.
Sometimes the reason for the impossibility of starting lies in the alarm system - its breakdown or incorrect setting often leads to the impossibility of starting the engine. In the absence of the necessary tools and experience in installing alarms, it will be difficult to cope with the problem on your own.

Topic: Very difficult to start, especially when cold, takes a long time to turn (video)
Hello everyone, I’m back with my 21113 16kl, the car still starts up disgustingly. Namely, it doesn’t start right away, but it spins for 4 seconds, after which it farts for 2-3 seconds with vibration in the body and rpm of 850-1000, after which the warm-up starts at 1300, this happens only after a long stay, if the engine is warm, it starts without this, but it also turns for a long time, but for some reason immediately after starting it drops the revolutions to 500, and gets up to 850 immediately after a second. I decided to write because today I decided to blow out the cylinders, in the end it stopped gripping altogether, only if I give it some gas, I’m fundamentally not happy with it. The fuel pump and air flow sensor are working properly, the spark plugs are January, the same thing happened on the old ones. This is a very tough option at -20, it seems like it was in the winter [video], and this is also not what it usually is, but almost imperceptibly [video], something consistently happens between the first and second video. Where to dig? For now, the plan is to try replacing the ignition module and wires, but if you pull the current ones one by one, the engine starts to shake

Topic: Long startup time on a warm engine
Hello forum users! VAZ 21121, 2006 engine 21114. The reason is the following - when starting the car in the morning there are no problems. starts up easily and quickly. Once the engine warms up and sits idle for 10-15-30 minutes, starting problems appear. The starter turns for 5-7 seconds. then only the launch occurs. but if you turn off a hot engine and start it right away, there are no such problems. Sometimes the check light comes on but goes out when driving. It almost always lights up at idle but goes out when driving. The diagnosticians said it was a misfire. compression 1-11, 2-11, 3-11, 4-8. Diagnosticians say that because of the compression, they say it is necessary to do the head and offer their services to repair it))))) but a friend had compression levels before engine repairs of 12,12,5,7 and there were no problems with starting. I’m sinning on the Ministry of Health. could it be the cause? or open your head. There were also clues that a check valve in the fuel system was to blame. I ASK FOR YOUR HELP AND ADVICE. Don’t kick me too hard, I’m new here))) I read the forum but didn’t find a clear answer. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

Re: Long start on a warm engine
The fact that this is a check valve in the pump -90% Check - there is a fitting on the fuel rail for measuring the fuel pressure, screw on the pressure gauge, start the engine, control the pressure, then extinguish it, see how long it takes for the pressure to drop (all operations on a hot engine) I think this will answer the question

Re: Long start on a warm engine
pal89 — Measure the compression with the addition of oil (10 ml to each cylinder) with a compression meter with a threaded tip that is screwed in instead of a spark plug. avto-master.info/diagnostika-iu … telja.html You can check the check valve in the fuel system yourself - Hose, pressure gauge, check with the engine running (3.5 atm), then turn off the “jumper” and look at the pressure on the pressure gauge. If it resets immediately, then the check valve is not working, if it holds pressure (3.5 atm), then it is working. The ignition module sometimes fails - if it is possible (in order not to buy) to take a working MZ from a donor or temporarily in a store for testing.
Main reasons
Among all the reasons why starting an engine can be difficult, we can highlight the main ones that stand out for poor starting of a cold engine:
- Low battery charge level - this reason most often occurs in the cold season, when the ambient temperature is significantly below 0 degrees Celsius. Because in such conditions, a dead car battery can lose its charge very quickly. This problem can be solved by simply replacing the battery with a new one, or periodically servicing the old one to recharge it.
The battery on the editorial car was running low. True, it was an 8-valve VAZ-2112. But the meaning is the same.
- When further inspecting the ignition system, pay attention to the condition of the individual coils and spark plugs. Check them for cracks and visible signs of wear. Also pay special attention to the condition of the working surface of the candles, as their condition can tell a lot. The order of dismantling does not matter.
- Check the fuel rail pressure.
Actually, the ramp is under pressure
- A clogged throttle valve, although not the main one, can also be the cause of difficult engine starting. It needs to be cleaned.
Throttle valve before and after cleaning
Air filter and mass air flow sensor - the air filter must be clean so that all the necessary air mass passes into the cylinders and mixes with the required amount of fuel.
We connect the probes of the measuring device: red to yellow, and black to green (to sensor ground).
Checking relays and ECUs and other sensors
- It may be necessary to remove the fuel pump to check. You will need to remove the rear seat and check the voltage at the pump terminals. The device should show + 12 volts. Then crank the engine using the starter. When it is triggered, they proceed to subsequent actions. It may happen that when you turn the ignition key, the starter does not turn. Then you need to check the reliability of all wires on it. The cause may be a problem in the contact group in the ignition switch.
- If it is determined that everything is in order, check the spark on the spark plugs. To do this you will need to open the hood. First, you need to unscrew the spark plug from the first cylinder. It is necessary to throw an armored wire over it and press it against the mass. In this case, the candle must be held with pliers and not with your hands. Otherwise you will get an electric shock. At this time, the assistant starts the engine. All other candles are checked in the same way. If there is a spark on each cylinder, it is necessary to look for ignition problems.
- The situations may be different, for example, a spark is present on cylinders 1 and 4, but not on cylinders 2 and 3. The ignition module should be replaced. If the replacement does not give a positive result, you should look for the reason in the output transistor switches to the ignition module from the ECU. The ECU may need to be repaired.
- It may happen that there is no spark on any cylinder. VAZ 2110 does not start because there is no spark. Often the reason for this lies in the crankshaft position sensor. The DPKV ECU gives a signal through which pulses are sent to the ignition module so that a spark is formed. The cause of the malfunction may be the lack of connection between the gear and the generator wheel. This can occur even if the DPKV is in full working order. At the same time, the crankshaft rotates, but the sensor will not process these rotations. Many are frightened by the fact that the VAZ 2110 injector has a large number of sensors. Indeed, there are a lot of them, but the reason that the VAZ 2110 does not start the first time is only one thing - the DPKV sensor is faulty.
- It is necessary to unscrew the spark plug from the cylinder and check its moisture content. A dry spark plug indicates that the injector is not spraying fuel. Then check the pressure in the fuel rail. It has a special bolt on the side. It must be unscrewed and a pressure gauge inserted in its place. It will show the presence or absence of pressure in the ramp. But it may not be at hand. Then the bolt is unscrewed and the pump starts. If there is pressure in the ramp, a good stream will flow out of the hole.
- If there is no pressure, the fuel filter must be replaced. The reason may also be that the line on the way from the fuel tank to the ramp is clogged. If the unscrewed candle turns out to be wet, then they all need to be unscrewed, wiped and dried thoroughly.
- Sometimes the reason is that the injectors are clogged and need to be cleaned. Clogged injectors may cause the spark plugs to be flooded with fuel. Dirty injectors are often the reason why a car engine has difficulty starting.
- Sometimes the reasons that the VAZ 2110 16 valves does not start may be of a deeper nature. They are very difficult to diagnose. But for the VAZ 2110 this is the exception rather than the rule.
VAZ 2110 injector 8 valves does not start when cold
For owners of a car of this brand, this problem, unfortunately, is not uncommon. It must be said that most of the blame does not belong to the manufacturer, but to the frosty weather conditions in which the car is located.
It will be useful: Ground clearance of the Lada Largus: technical characteristics and real performance of the car, equipment, expert opinion, prices and reviews from motorists
If in winter a car sits outside all night or in a garage that is not heated, then all the problems arise because it has completely cooled down.
At the same time, the metal, fuel, and lubricant change their physical properties.
All this ultimately leads to the fact that it becomes quite difficult to start the power plant. Problems will be added by the fact that the car is not properly maintained regularly.
The most common reasons for this situation are the following:
- There is a specific problem with the battery.
- The gasoline pump has failed.
- The sensors that monitor the crankshaft and those that monitor the condition of the camshaft are faulty.
- The problem is the candles.
- The alarm goes off.
- The system that redistributes fuel is experiencing problems.
- An element in the ignition unit has failed.
Why the 16 valve VAZ-2112 injector does not start well when cold: reasons and repairs
The principle of starting the injector 2112
In order to know why the engine does not start, you need to know exactly how it works. The basis for starting the engine is a spark, which depends on the ignition system and the fuel-air mixture, which is supplied in certain proportions. Therefore, if any of these components does not work as it should, startup becomes difficult or simply impossible.
Temperature sensor
When they, or even just one of them, are faulty, the vehicle's on-board computer is unable to properly test the engine and therefore cannot deliver the required amount of fuel to the cylinders. In this situation, the correct and least expensive option would be to replace the control device that has become unusable. Of course, there is a theoretical possibility of testing it for suitability, but in reality it is difficult to do this at home, since special equipment is required. Calling a car service for this will require quite a lot of money and time.
About DTOZH
In general, power unit temperature sensors are the most important regulators of an injection engine. There are two of them on it. One is located directly in the cylinder head, it displays the temperature value on the instrument panel.
The second one is located in the thermostat, and provides data on the temperature of the control unit of the power unit. Based on the results obtained, the control unit regulates the fuel supply - it supplies more fuel to a cold internal combustion engine, and less to a hot one. In addition, it is the control unit that regulates the OZ, influences the ignition of the fuel assembly, and activates the coolant fan if the liquid temperature rises above 100 °C.
Obviously, with faulty DTOZh there will be difficulties in the operation of the motor. However, this applies more to the DTOZH, which provides information directly to the block. For example, if the DTOZH is faulty, it will give false values about a cold engine, although it is already boiling. The supply of fuel to the cylinders will increase, because this is provided by the system. Let's say you drove for a long time, then stopped and went into a store. Now starting the power unit will cause obvious displeasure, since it will take a very long time to start due to data failures and oversaturation.
At the same time, the SOP, which is responsible for the ignition of a fuel assembly that is clearly over-enriched, changes greatly. As a result, the fuel will evaporate intensively, and the concentration of gasoline in the fuel assembly will be so high that the mixture will hardly ignite due to the small amount of oxygen.
It was said above that when you press the accelerator pedal, the startup time will be noticeably reduced. Now it becomes clear why this happens. By pressing the gas, we add oxygen to the fuel assembly, and the fuel ignites faster.
Thus, by replacing a faulty DTOZh, you can solve not only the problem with long-term starting of the internal combustion engine, but also other difficulties relating to the process of engine operation and its cooling system. The engine, after replacing the faulty DTOZH, will add stability, throttle response and power.
How to start easier in cold winter
Advice! To make starting the engine in the cold season much easier, we recommend installing an auto-start alarm on your car.
Warming up every certain time. Fuel consumption will suffer, but the likelihood of starting in severe frost will increase
If the temperature drops below 20 degrees minus, you can set the engine to automatically start every three hours. This will not only allow you to get into a warm car in winter, but will also prevent the oil from thickening too much during severe night frosts, which will certainly have a beneficial effect on the condition of the engine as a whole.
Probable Causes
First of all, you should make sure that the temperature sensors installed in the car remain in proper working order. According to the manufacturer's requirements, monitoring devices must be changed regularly.
In addition, the following reasons are the most common in a situation where the engine (including the one on which the injector is installed) of the VAZ-2110 starts very poorly in the morning when it’s cold:
- timing belt wear;
- damage to the insulating sheath of electrical wiring;
- problems with the ignition mechanism.
It is worth recognizing that this list is completely incomplete. But these are the most common reasons.
Checking the operation of the fuel pump
When turning the key in the ignition mechanism, a distinct sound should be heard in the rear seat area. This hum is created by a running pump that pumps fuel. When there is no sound, you need to check the relay that controls the fuel pump and the corresponding fuses. If the problem is not with them and they work flawlessly, you should measure the voltage that passes through the pump terminals.
If there is no voltage, look for the problem in the related wiring.
Candles
This is where you should start checking the power plant. The fact that they are probably not functioning correctly is indicated by the discovery of:
It would probably be easier for a novice driver to simply change them all together. Those who already have sufficient experience in operating domestic cars can easily revive spark plugs. To do this they need:
- clean from dirt;
- get rid of soot;
- warm up with a blowtorch.
When, even after replacing the spark plugs, the engine still does not start, you have to look further for the cause of the damage.
Why isn't the car .
The main reasons why the car is bad
starts when cold are:
Low quality gasoline
There is no common method for assessing fuel quality. You have to use indirect signs, for example, a bad factory after refueling at an untested gas station. At the same time, while your car does not start, there is a high chance of the battery dying, “killing the spark plugs,” clogging the injector, and even destroying the engine in case of improper detonation.
If bad
The engine starts when hot, the reason is probably due to unsuccessful refueling. The solution to this problem is the use of additives in the gas tank that improve the basic characteristics of gasoline.
To protect yourself from the consequences of refueling with low-quality fuel and keep the injector in good condition, we recommend that you always keep on hand the long-term injector cleaner Langzeit Injection Reiniger for gasoline engines and the long-term diesel additive Langzeit Diesel Additiv for diesel engines.
It is recommended to use these fuel additives when refueling at untested gas stations, as well as on highways.

Sasha, it seems you are already starting to not believe yourself. I wrote to you only the truth and nothing but the truth, based on my own experience. I know for sure that there are 2 (two) sensors in the mass air flow sensor housing. I have already written about this and shown it in photographs. I held this case in my hands, touched each sensor with my fingers and examined it. See above. You wrote that you measured the parameters of the mass air flow sensor - it shows about 1.0 volts. We note that you have confirmed that there is one of the sensors in this housing. Further, you wrote on August 10 at 11:48 “Inside there is what is in the last picture. ", with this you confirmed that there is a second sensor. We fix it - there are 2, two different sensors in one housing. Because that second photo shows a thermistor - a temperature sensor.
Look at the photo, the red rectangle on the wire is a resistor that changes the resistance depending on the air temperature and transmits this data to the controller.
The antennae are not soldered there. Just inserted and clamped
There is a plastic wall between the MAF and DTVV. They are neighbors
In the bottom photo, we see the intake air temperature sensor from above, and the mass air flow sensor is there, as it were, inside (shown by blue arrows, the air flow went through it)
Possible malfunctions in the timing belt
- the timing belt slips through the pulley teeth by 1-2 positions. Because of this, the position of the valve timing changes and the engine may not start at all.
- Slipping of the camshaft pulley or damage to the shaft.
- Malfunction or incorrect operation of the crankshaft position sensor.
In a situation where it is not possible, from a technical point of view, to identify a malfunction using general diagnostics, it is necessary to carry out general computer diagnostics of the engine with connection to the ECU

Timing belt broke
VAZ 2110 does not start, the starter turns - perhaps the reason lies in a broken timing belt?
The engine gas distribution mechanism is driven by the crankshaft gear. Initially, chains were used for this purpose, and timing belts, which began to be widely used about twenty years ago, aroused mistrust among car owners.
The undoubted advantages of a belt drive over a chain drive are its simple design, low weight and low noise. However, it is not without its drawbacks, the main one of which is the relatively short resource of the timing belt.
Of course, a faulty, torn or misaligned timing belt also causes the VAZ 2110 to fail to start. By the way, on stock, non-deformed models of the 21120 engine, a torn timing belt also causes valve deformation and requires additional repairs. In this case, driving even after replacing the belt without restoring the valves is impossible.
New timing belt VAZ 2110
Check for the presence of a spark in the spark plugs visually by turning on the ignition and pressing the outer metal part of the spark plug against the unpainted metal body of the car or against structural elements. Do not forget that all electrical parts of the product are under high voltage, so it is better to carry out work with insulating gloves. If there is no spark on only one spark plug, be sure to check the others and draw the appropriate conclusions.
The consequences of a broken timing belt depend entirely on the design of the power unit. To imagine what will happen at this moment, you need to turn to the mechanics of the internal combustion engine.
In a running engine, the pistons continuously move from one dead center to another. During the intake stroke, the piston moves down and the intake valve opens; during the exhaust stroke, the exhaust valve opens and the piston moves up. At the moment when the piston is at top dead center, all valves must be closed. If the timing belt breaks, the camshaft stops rotating and the valves stop in one position. At the same time, the crankshaft continues to rotate by inertia, and the pistons rush towards the open valves.
Timing belt VAZ 2110 OPEN
In some engines, for example, the 8-valve VAZ-2111, the pistons have special recesses to avoid contact with the valves in the event of a break. In this case, there will be no consequences, except that the car will not be able to get to the garage or workshop under its own power.
VAZ 2110 engine 16 valves, technical characteristics, timing device and diagram
The VAZ 2110 engine with 16 valves is the most powerful and dynamic engine of the “ten”, at the same time making a car with such a power unit quite difficult to repair and maintain.
Gasoline injection engines VAZ 2110 16 cl. two, one with a working volume of 1.5 liters (VAZ-2112) and the second with a volume of 1.6 liters (VAZ-21124). The VAZ-2112 engine has one significant problem. When the timing belt breaks, the valves hit the piston. Actually, the cross-sectional image of this 16-valve engine gives a clear idea of the actual lack of sufficient clearance between the valve plates and the piston crown. That is, when the belt breaks and the piston moves to the top point by inertia, the valve can be opened and an inevitable blow occurs. Usually, when this happens, the valves bend. And in the worst case, they break, turning the combustion chamber and piston bottom into metal crumbs.
Actually, in the 1.6 liter engine (VAZ-2112) this problem no longer exists. The valves don't bend there. This was achieved by using new pistons with a special bottom shape, which has recesses in case the timing belt breaks. Let's look at photos of similar pistons below.
Below are detailed characteristics of VAZ 2110 16 valve engines.
Carburetor
If there is a problem with it, you must first clean it. With such a task, it is better to turn to specialists - they, in particular, are able to quickly:
- adjust the carburetor;
- clean its dampers;
- check compression.
In severe cases, it is necessary to rinse it completely. However, sometimes the car does not start due to the fact that the bimetallic plate, intended specifically for the cold start of a power plant with a carburetor, has become unusable.
