Another characteristic of the position of the car’s wheels is caster, which is the angle between the shock absorber in the MacPherson strut suspension and the inclination of the wheel knuckle.

. Caster is also defined as the inclined angle of the steering axis of the wheel. Drawing an analogy with the front wheel of a bicycle, this is the angle of the steering fork: the more the fork “lies”, the more the bicycle handlebar will tend to take a “straight” position.

Most car models are designed in such a way that the caster is 6 degrees and cannot be adjusted, so further we will only consider working with wheel alignment.

The importance of the correct position of the car wheels

Adjusting wheel alignment and camber is very important. A number of characteristics of the car will depend on how correctly the position of the car’s wheels is adjusted:

  • the vehicle's resistance to skidding and overturning while driving;
  • vehicle maneuverability and controllability;
  • efficiency in terms of fuel consumption;
  • car tire resource.

The position of the car wheels changes if:

  • repair operations were performed that affected the suspension or steering system of the vehicle;
  • the car on the road “caught” a hole, as a result of which the disk was deformed;
  • the car received a strong blow;
  • the car moved for a long time on an uneven road;
  • the rods and steering tips have become unusable;
  • the play of the longitudinal and transverse rods and the silent blocks of the levers has increased;
  • the bridge is bent (in the case of models with a continuous bridge);
  • the wheel bearing is worn out;
  • the ball joint of the steering knuckle is faulty;
  • The shock absorber support in the body cup is faulty.

Signs of wheel alignment problems

The technical manual for the car model, as a rule, indicates after how many kilometers it is recommended to carry out routine diagnostics of camber and toe indicators.

But in practice, this figure becomes very arbitrary, since the car can be used in different conditions. Therefore , in order to determine the need for diagnostics, you should be guided by the following signs:

  • if the wheels are in a straight position, the steering crossbar remains shifted to any side from the horizontal;
  • on a straight, level section of the road, if you let go of the steering wheel, the car goes to the side;
  • on a straight course the car “yaws” and behaves unstable;
  • turning the steering wheel is processed late;
  • the steering is too unyielding (“stiff steering wheel”);
  • with serviceable brakes, the car skids to the side when the speed drops sharply;
  • on long turning radii, the wheels touch the fender liners;
  • the steering wheel does not return to its normal position when the car completes a turning maneuver;
  • while the car is moving, the tires rustle uncharacteristically;
  • car tires wear unevenly (provided that the pressure in them is maintained within the required limits).

What is a car loan

The concept of a car loan is practically no different from a regular loan. This is money that a bank can provide for the purchase of a used or new car. In order to have a guarantee of payment of the amount on time, a car is taken as collateral, which implies the impossibility of reselling it. You should not rely on the bank's work without receiving benefits for yourself. Usually the payment is interest and commissions, which constitute profit for the credit institution, so if an advertisement talks about installment plans without extra expenses, you should not hope that this will bypass you.

When receiving a loan, the bank will take a small percentage for its work, so in order to avoid receiving a fine, you must make payments on time.

Making adjustments yourself

Preparing for measurements and subsequent adjustments

To carry out independent work on adjusting the angles of the vehicle wheels, you will need the most flat horizontal platform equipped with an inspection hole. You also need to prepare the following tools and auxiliary equipment:

  • driver's tool kit;
  • a plumb cord or building level, a piece of chalk;
  • folding measuring ruler or tape measure;
  • a skein of strong rope or flexible wire;
  • two timbers with a flat surface, 60 cm long;
  • two sliding supports for car wheels (can be made from 4 metal plates, lubricating each pair of plates with grease to ensure the best sliding).

The presence of sliding supports is extremely important for the adjustment operation, since the second wheel must be stationary during adjustment!

It is also better to perform suspension diagnostics before adjusting the wheel alignment angles.

The machine is installed on sliding supports placed at the same level. At this stage, it is extremely important to make sure that the machine is standing on a completely flat surface, otherwise the measurements will be carried out with a significant error, which is unacceptable. The steering wheel of the car should be level; the best solution would be to fix it. Set the car to the parking brake.

Camber

As a rule, the need to adjust the camber of the front wheels arises in cars with multi-link suspension.

If the indicator is unsatisfactory, the wheel position should be adjusted using keys and adjusting mechanisms.

Alignment: working with the front axle

For the front wheels, the toe-in values ​​are adjusted by adjusting the lengths of the steering rods. Changing the steering rods is carried out by rotating the steering tip and clutch.

The second method is to measure the distance from the stretched string to the wheel.

Normal toe-in for passenger cars is on average 0 - 0.25 degrees, which for each wheel will be 0-1 mm.

To make the adjustment, loosen the locknut and, by rotating the steering rod, you need to set the required distance, which will be the required angle.

Alignment: working with the rear axle

The toe-in of the rear wheels can only be adjusted if the car model is equipped with an independent rear suspension. The wheels are adjusted by adjusting the traction distance with eccentric bolts, or by rotating the couplings for the same purpose. The toe-in of the rear wheels should be 0-0.5 degrees.

Finishing setup

After all the manipulations have been completed and the camber and toe angles have been adjusted, it is imperative to move the car one meter back and forth. The purpose of this technological operation is to relieve possible stress in the suspension system and car tires. After this, you need to re-install the car in a horizontal position, secure the steering wheel, activate the parking brake and perform all control measurements. If the indicators remain unchanged or “float” slightly, while remaining within the normal range, the work is done.

Correction of toe-in and camber indicators using special equipment

The first stand on which adjustments were made to the angles of car wheels was introduced in the USA by auto design engineer Lee Hunter. It was called optical because it used focused beams to determine the angles of the wheels. In 1969, the stand was switched to computer technology, and a quarter of a century later, the optical stand was replaced by 3D technology.

An important role in the setup process is played by the experience and qualifications of the specialist performing the setup.

Often, “manual” skilled performance of work turns out to be of much higher quality than the use of “smart” equipment.

So, it is quite possible to adjust the wheel alignment of car wheels with your own hands. But if you are not too confident in your abilities, or have an expensive car with expensive tires, it is better, after setting it up yourself, to turn to professionals who can perform high-quality diagnostics.
