Changing transmission oil in a Hyundai Accent manual transmission

According to popular belief, the transmission fluid in a manual transmission does not require replacement, but this is not at all true. Often it retains its performance properties much longer than in an automatic transmission, but over time they can still deteriorate. That is why it is still worth replacing the oil fluid in the Hyundai Accent manual transmission.

The recommended limit for changing the fluid in a manual transmission according to the maintenance regulations is every 90 thousand kilometers. Necessary conditions for work are the presence of an overpass or inspection hole. You should plan ahead to change the transmission fluid after a relatively long drive.

Transmission oil in the Hyundai Accent gearbox

The post is more useful to owners of Korean cars!
and if you order from an autodoc, it is necessary only from the supplier, an official representative of MOIL

. But I refused Motul because the price is 1300 per liter, but I need 2.15 liters for the Accent. Next I wanted to buy 4 liters of Kix oil, the good thing is that there will be oil left and the price is inexpensive

This oil was recommended by one Accentovod because he lives in a northern region with frosts and says that the oil does not freeze and the gearbox behaves well in both cold and hot weather. What scared me off was that it was semi-synthetic. But as many accent leaders say that our gearbox needs exactly 75w85 and not 90, it was in doubt, since in my book it says 90 and under the number 90 there are mainly synthetics. There was a choice between the original MTF 75W90 and 75W85

I read a bunch of reviews and watched for a long time based on the reviews in the group and came to the conclusion that the MTF 75W90 behaves better in the northern regions and the gearbox does not freeze, but on the 75W85 there were complaints that it was difficult to shift and when the clutch was released in neutral it was felt, plus on top of that it was semi-synthetic, complaints it wasn’t only from those who live in the southern regions of Rostov and lower on the map) Some people also pour HYUNDAI 75W85 GL-4 MTF PRIME, although this is an oil with the designation 85, but unlike 75w85 it is synthetic and has the inscription PRIME

part number 0430000140 but this oil is more expensive than MTF 75W90 HYUNDAI from 750 rubles and more per liter. According to reviews and some accent guides, the instruction manual says and recommends Ravenol oil. But they write equalol in the book, as I understand from Accents in more recent editions. ) Thus, to summarize, when choosing gearbox oil, be sure to ensure that the oil has a GL 4 or, in extreme cases, GL 4/5 tolerance, but GL5 is not recommended and is used mainly in drive axle gearboxes and they write that it has a negative effect on non-ferrous metals and synchronizers just made of non-ferrous metal.
Replacement process:
17 mm wrench head

I poured in 2 liters boldly and then I had to add 150 grams, just as it is written in the book, someone says that 2 liters is enough for them, but it wasn’t enough for me, although I didn’t drain it for long, after a couple of minutes I tightened the drain plug. Oil should be poured so much that it is level with the lower filler hole. in other words, until it leaks from the hole. Pour these 100-150 grams carefully! Since I ordered the oil on the Internet and there was no time to wait for the order, I had to add 100 grams of old oil, which I drained. It didn’t look particularly black when it was drained, although in the photo it looks very black in the canister)

but it was on the drain plug, I don’t know if it’s dirt with chips or just dirt, but this plug is magnetic.

As a result, the shifts became a little softer, it even seemed to me that it began to shift smoother from higher gears to 1st. It’s up to you to change the oil, and decide for yourself which company, I only suggested above which one you can choose from, for example, but based on the reviews I don’t recommend it and don’t recommend it! oil 75W85 MTF. Now I will wait for frost and test how the filled 75W90 MTF oil behaves in cold weather. By the way, for the sake of experiment, I put the waste oil and new oil in the freezer to see which one will thicken more) Thanks for your attention.

Manual transmission oil - why you need to pour 75W-85 (GL4)

Tagaz’s book ERRORALLY (more precisely, due to the lack of the necessary viscosities in Russia at that time) recommended pouring 75w-90, but for Korean cars 75w-85 was always recommended. In 2005, Hyundai released a bulletin in which it explained that it was necessary to pour 75w-85, but for many this remained behind the scenes. Link to the ballot (PDF format)

75W-85 is the viscosity on which the Accent gearbox was designed; it is this viscosity that provides the required speed of spin-up and deceleration of the synchronizers, so shifts become as easy and clear as possible.

I filled myself with: part number 137013 - gearbox oil ZIC GF TOP 75w-85 GL-4 (1l) - designed specifically for Hyundai and Kia gearboxes, synthetic

You can take any manufacturer. It is better to use synthetics, it is less sensitive to temperatures, there will be a minimum of difficulties in the cold

It also wouldn’t hurt to replace: 17511-16000 — manual transmission crankcase filler plug washer 21513-11000 — manual transmission crankcase drain plug washer

Before 75W-85 I used 75w-90 Mobil Mobilube-1 and Castrol TAF-X synthetics. The mobile was tough when cold, but became great after a strong warm-up (but only in the heat of summer). Castrol was softer when cold, but did not improve much when warmed up. But 75w-85 in any conditions and switching temperatures is not only easier, but also clearer

, plus the rear one began to jam less and the crunches on the second one significantly weakened. It feels like they installed a new box.

About GL4, GL5: For some reason, some try to buy GL5, mistakenly believing that this is a quality class, but in fact this is applicability, for example, oils purely for manual transmissions are designated GL4, and GL5 are oils for axles and transfer cases - for units experiencing increased loads. But you shouldn’t think that this is good for manual transmissions; such oils contain an increased amount of extreme pressure components in the form of sulfur and phosphorus, which have a negative oxidizing/corrosive effect on copper, of which most synchronizers are made, and besides, extreme pressure properties do not contribute to wear resistance relate. Therefore, for passenger cars it is best to use GL4; universal GL4/5 is also allowed.

Hyundai Accent manual transmission oil

The Hyundai Accent is an entry-level compact car produced since 1995. The sedan and three-door hatchback of the same name were equipped with 1.3, 1.5 and 1.6 liter petrol engines (85-105 hp), as well as a manual or automatic transmission. In a number of countries the car was designated Excel and Pony, also Dodge Brisa for the Venezuelan market. The second generation of the 2000 model, known in Korea under the name Verna, became very popular in the Russian market. Moreover, the production of this sedan was carried out in Taganrog from 2003 to 2012. Moreover, by that time (since 2003) a restyled Elantra with an updated design and interior was already available. Our car was offered with a 1.5 liter gasoline engine (102 hp). In other countries, three- and five-door hatchbacks with a 1.6 liter engine (105 hp) were still available.

Oil change period

The gearbox oil of a Hyundai Accent needs to be changed every 50-60 thousand km to avoid overheating of the gearbox and difficult gear shifts. In harsh conditions, more frequent oil changes cannot be ruled out, the quality of which deteriorates over time due to the loss of beneficial properties. So, we are talking about the protective functions of the oil, which protect the box parts from corrosion and oxidation processes, dirt deposits and metal shavings. In addition, the oil also performs a cooling function, protecting the hot gearbox components from increased dry friction and overheating. Finally, high-quality oil effectively lubricates parts through a durable oil film that ensures smooth gear shifting under any low- or high-temperature loads. Thus, if not replaced promptly, these three important functions of the oil (protective, lubricating and cooling) will be lost, and as a result the transmission will be subject to excessive wear.

Recommendations

The manufacturer recommends pouring only original oil into the Hyundai Accent manual transmission because:

  • it is designed specifically for this type of automatic transmission and vehicle;
  • has a special chemical structure that protects parts;
  • the technical and technological properties of the oil meet the plant standards;
  • prevents rapid wear of parts.

The oil in the gearbox is designed to cool the elements and lubricate them, but due to heating it loses its original properties, which is the reason for replacing it.

How much oil to fill

First generation X3, 1994-1999

The emphasis of the first generation replaced the Hyundai Excel, although the former Excel name was retained for the Netherlands and Australia, and the Pony designation was current in France. The car did not have a sophisticated design and looked like a typical budget sedan, although three- and five-door hatchbacks had a more youthful appearance. In general, the body, almost devoid of sharp lines, was considered quite modern. In addition, the car became popular due to its high maintainability and low cost, which was very important for the Russian market in the era of the 90s. The interior of the car, like the exterior, is also made in rounded shapes, relevant at that time. The most expensive versions of the Accent had air conditioning, power windows, power steering, airbags and an automatic transmission.

Second generation LC, 1999-2012

The accent of the second generation, in contrast to its streamlined predecessor, was, on the contrary, distinguished by straight forms, due to which the body was more proportional. In addition, the internal space has already increased, and the wheelbase is 2440 mm (previously it was 2400 mm). In 2003, a facelift took place, affecting the front part of the body, and also bringing a new LC2 index in the model designation. The 2nd generation Accent engine range consisted of new gasoline engines: a 12-valve SOHC with a volume of 1.3 liters, as well as a 16-valve DOHC with a volume of 1.5 liters. A 1.5 liter three-cylinder CRDi diesel was also available. The top versions were offered in Europe and North America, for which after 2003 a 1.6-liter engine became available. Production officially ended in 2006, but in Russia this model continued to be assembled until 2012.

What kind of oil should be poured into a manual transmission?

Original

The manual transmission of a Hyundai Accent requires branded semi-synthetic oil Hyundai Mobis MTF 75W-85 GL-4. Regarding climatic conditions, SAE 70W, 75W, 80W or 85W oil should be used mainly in winter, and SAE 90, 140 or 250 is recommended in summer. For year-round use, it is better to choose all-season oil with a viscosity of SAE 75W-80, 80W-85, 85W-90 , 75W-90 or 80W-90.

Unoriginal

Any gear oil with the characteristics 75W-85 is poured into the Hyundai Accent manual transmission. For cars of recent years, you can choose semi-synthetic or synthetic, and for older models - mineral oil. It has a thicker consistency, which means there is less chance of leaks in the presence of microcracks or gaps between contact pairs. Among other parameters, it is important to pay attention to oil with current API-GL-4 (5) approvals, which provide the optimal amount of useful additives for a manual transmission. For example, you can opt for Shell Spirax S5 ATE 75W-90 GL-4/GL-5.

What kind of oil to pour into an Accent automatic transmission

According to the manufacturer's regulations, the transmission oil in an automatic transmission should be changed every 90,000 km.

The manufacturer specifies the use of Mitsubishi Diamond ATF SPIII oil. Also suitable oils are Castrol Transmax ATF, Ravenol Dexron III, Shell Donax TX. For a partial replacement, 6.1 liters will be required, for a complete replacement - 9-10 liters.

The A4AF3 gearbox (namely, it is on the Accent), like many other Hyundai automatic transmissions, is designed to operate using Hyundai SP-III transmission fluid. And these are the liquids that are recommended to be poured into the machine of our accents.

Let us clarify: Diamond SP-III, Dia Queen SP-III, BP Autran SP-III, Ravenol SP-III, Chevron SP-III are absolutely identical transmission fluids that are completely compatible and can be mixed with each other in any proportions.

Any other fluids are NOT COMPATIBLE with SP-III specification fluids. Therefore, it is highly not recommended to add other types of liquids to a box filled with SP-III.

Entry 29. How I changed the oil in the box. Changing the oil in the manual transmission. Hyundai Accent. Accent.

Hi all. I decided to change the oil in the box. I needed: 1) Oil - 3 liters. 2) Drain hole gasket - 1 pc. 3) Gasket for filler hole - 1 pc. 4) Funnel - 1 pc. 5) Syringe 50 cc. - 1 PC. 6) Hose (for filling oil) - 0.7 m. 7) Dropper 1 pc. So. He took off the protection. This is the worst part of the whole process

.
We are looking for the drain and fill hole. We take a spanner wrench (my personal opinion, but I think it’s correct, since the ratchet doesn’t really fit there and you can roll the bolt)
to 17 and unscrew the filler hole bolt

first fill it with WD - it sticks. Why did you start with aspic? If I can't unscrew it, it doesn't matter. We can do this later. Armed with everything you need. But if you start to drain the oil and then find out that the filler bolt does not come out, for some reason, that’s a disaster. Unscrewed it. Let's start with the drain.

Here it’s better to take a ratchet and a 24mm head, because it’s hard to get around here with a wrench. We prepare a container for the old oil. Unscrewed it. Leaked.

This is what came out to me. Next, use a syringe with a dropper

We pump out the remaining oil that did not drain out on its own. Take new oil

pour a little until fresh oil flows

. It doesn't flow fast. There's time to tidy up a little. Well, or something to do. I decided to compare the new oil and the old one.

In general, feel free to pour 2 cans. 3 carefully. Because It seems like a 2.2 system as I read. But I'm not sure. In general, with my washings, I have 3 canisters left

. But on top of everything, I overfilled it a little. Waited for the excess to drain from the filler

How much oil to pour into a Hyundai Accent box

Replacing the gear shift on a Hyundai Accent should be carried out depending on its type, the load on it during operation, as well as the use of the vehicle.

For automatic transmissions, the time from replacement to replacement is much shorter. It is recommended to change them approximately once every 90 thousand kilometers. But if you rarely drive your car, then the change is carried out every six years.

If your car has a manual gearbox, it should be replaced once every 100 thousand kilometers. Also, if the machine is rarely used, it is recommended to replace it once every seven years.

As you can see, the mechanics are less picky. This difference is due to the fact that the manual transmission is more durable.

Selecting manual transmission oil for replacement

When choosing a lubricant for changing your Accent manual transmission, you need to consider a number of the following aspects:

  • car mileage;
  • oil that was previously used to lubricate parts;
  • temperature conditions of vehicle operation.

If the mileage of your car is very high and the rubber components of the gearbox no longer have their original properties, then using a synthetic lubricant does not make sense. Also, if mineral lubricant was previously used to lubricate gearbox parts, then before changing the seals there is no point in using synthetics because there will be a 100% leak.

Among modern manufacturers of automotive chemicals, products from the following companies are suitable for Hyundai Accent: Castrol, Liqui Moly, Motul, Ravenol, as well as original lubricant from the manufacturer Hyundai/Kia.

Why change?

Of course, nowadays manufacturers of automotive chemicals conduct a lot of research and present a fairly high-quality product on the market. But due to the characteristics of the chemical components of different types of lubricants, over time the oil loses a number of its properties and does not fully perform its functions. Gearbox lubricant is no exception; over time, it also needs to be replaced.

After the loss of some properties of the lubricant, metal ones are not protected from mechanical damage during friction. It is also important that due to the same friction, a sediment of small metal particles appears in the oil, which subsequently have a detrimental effect on the internal mechanisms.

Algorithm for changing oil in manual transmission Hyundai Accent

First of all, you need to find the drain and fill plugs. Usually these are the two largest bolts located on different sides. The drain plug is located at the very bottom of the box body, closer to the car's cabin itself, and the filler plug is located closer to the front of the car. After we have found the bolts we need, we unscrew the drain plug and substitute the vessel we prepared earlier. You can also unscrew the other plug so that the used lubricant drains out faster. After the insides of the gearbox are completely emptied of the old lubricating fluid, you need to tighten the drain plug and you can begin to fill the new oil back in. You need to use a special syringe. After the filling process is completed, tighten the filler plug.

Basically, about 2 liters of lubricant are placed in the mechanics of a Hyundai Accent. As you can see, you need to do everything carefully so that you don’t also have to clean everything that was touched by the mining later.

We show you how to change the oil in a manual gearbox of a Hyundai Accent 2 with your own hands. The oil from the box, as well as from the engine, must be drained when hot, i.e. We drive 5-10 km before the procedure. The drain plug is unscrewed with a 24mm wrench; it is located to the left of the engine. Under the drain plug there was an aluminum ring that was stuck to the box, we tear it off and replace it with a copper one:

Our drain plug is magnetic, this is done in order to collect metal shavings, be sure to clean it. Then we screw it back. Using a “carburetor cleaner,” we clean the box body from dirt and oil. Unscrew this bolt:

And pour oil through the resulting hole. We take either a funnel with a long hose or a syringe, whichever is more convenient for you. We will fill in ZIC 75w90, which is completely synthetic; you need to fill in 2 liters of 150 grams. There is also an aluminum washer on the filler neck bolt, replace it with a copper one. Tighten at the right moment.

Video of changing the oil in a manual transmission manual transmission Hyundai Accent 2:

Backup video on how to change the oil in a Hyundai Accent 2 manual transmission:

Many people do not understand why it is necessary to change the oil in a manual transmission at all; the fact is that each oil has its own service life; for transmission oil it is 2-3 years or 60 thousand km. mileage After this, it begins to lose its properties and exposes the box mechanisms to greater wear.

Contrary to popular belief, the oil in a manual transmission still needs to be changed. Yes, it begins to lose its properties much later than motor oil, but it still loses. Therefore, an oil change in the Hyundai Accent manual transmission will be needed sooner or later. However, it is not difficult to do it yourself.

Checking the level

The Hyundai Accent automatic transmission is one of those gearboxes that has a dipstick. Therefore, checking the level and condition of the transmission fluid will not be difficult even for a beginner.

The steps of the procedure are as follows:

  • Warm up your Hyundai Accent cars.
  • Ride it for about five kilometers so that the oil becomes liquid and gets into all the components of the device.
  • Stop on a level surface. Turn off the engine.
  • Open the hood and unscrew the plug with the dipstick.
  • Remove the dipstick and wipe dry with a lint-free cloth.
  • Insert the dipstick back into the automatic transmission hole and tighten it.
  • Unscrew and take out. Look at the level. If it is at o, then there is no oil starvation. If it is lower, then add about a liter of fresh oil to the automatic transmission.

How to properly check the oil level in a Toyota automatic transmission

In addition to the level, pay attention to the color and quality of the lubricant. Transmission fluid should not smell like burning, be black, or have metallic impurities. If you find one of the above defects, this means that the Hyundai Accent automatic transmission oil needs to be changed.

Hyundai Accent transmission fluid replacement process

Changing the oil in a Hyundai Accent manual transmission can be done with your own hands. To replace it, it is still advisable to put the car on special equipment. Before this, you need to prepare the necessary tools:

Once all the tools are ready and the vehicle is installed on the inspection equipment, you can begin the oil change process:

Be sure to measure the oil level. If it turns out to be insufficient, you should add more. If there is too much liquid, some must be drained. After installing the filler plug, you must again make a short trip while switching gears, and then again take a control measurement of the oil level.

The oil change in a manual transmission on a Hyundai Accent should be done once every 90 thousand kilometers. The procedure is carried out on an inspection pit, lift or overpass. Before starting the replacement, you should drive 10-15 kilometers.

How to check the oil level in an automatic transmission (automatic transmission)

An automatic transmission is much more convenient for the driver than a manual one, especially when driving in urban conditions. At the same time, it is more complex from a technical point of view, and the automatic transmission is one of the most expensive units in a car.

In order to keep it in working condition for as long as possible, it is necessary to keep the amount of oil in the machine at the level recommended by the machine manufacturers.

Every driver should know how to check the oil level in the machine to determine whether it needs to be topped up for proper operation of the unit.

Signs of low oil in an automatic transmission

Experts recommend completely changing the oil in an automatic transmission on modern cars approximately every 60-70 thousand kilometers. In this case, you may need to add oil earlier.

According to the recommendations of the developers of automatic transmissions, you need to check the oil level in the automatic transmission every 5-7 thousand kilometers.

This will allow you to predict when it will be necessary to add fluid, as well as detect wear on the oil pump gasket and ring, due to which oil can quickly leave the box.

If you do not monitor the oil level and it is not enough, the following symptoms will appear:

  • On a stationary vehicle with the engine running, the transmission will make a lot of noise when changing speed;
  • The car will jerk when shifting into higher gears.

It's best not to let the transmission get to the point where symptoms of low oil levels appear. Timely checking the amount of oil in the machine and adding it will extend the service life of the box.

How to change the oil in an Accent box

The principle of changing the oil in a box is in many ways similar to - the oil is drained onto a warm engine, after a short trip

. The car should be parked on a pit or overpass.

Next, you need to place a container for old oil and unscrew the drain plug with a 24 key. While the oil is draining, you can work on the drain plug - it is magnetic, so it does not interfere with cleaning it. You also need to replace the washer on it. After the oil has drained, you can screw the plug back on. Tightening torque - 30-35 Nm.

Then you need to pour oil into the box. To do this, unscrew the filler plug and use a syringe or funnel with a hose to fill in new oil. The washer on the filler plug also needs to be changed.

, then screw the plug back. Tightening torque - 25-30 Nm.

Lubrication allows the Hyundai Accent transmission to operate smoothly and effectively change torque. The functioning of mechanics/automation is directly dependent on the properties of the motor oil that is poured into it.

Changing the oil in a Hyundai Accent gearbox
must be done correctly and in a timely manner.
Only in this case will your vehicle last a long time.

Step-by-step procedure for changing oil in a manual transmission

Draining old oil from a manual transmission in a Hyundai Accent occurs according to the following scheme:

  1. The car is placed on a flat surface. To do this, it is recommended to use an inspection hole, a lift or an overpass.
  2. The gearbox housing is wiped with a rag around the drain and filler holes.
  3. Place a container with a volume of 3-5 liters under the hole.
  4. The drain plug is loosened and an empty container is placed under it.

  • The oil is drained into a substitute container. The sealing ring of the drain plug is replaced (if necessary). The plug is tightened with a torque of 35-45 Nm.
  • Oil renewal in Hyundai Accent boxes: how it happens

Any fluid in a car requires replacement within the interval established by the manufacturer. If you neglect this rule, then the components and assemblies of the car will not only over time begin to work differently than they should, but their complete failure is also possible.

A Korean-made passenger car is no exception and the transmission system, namely its most important part - the gearbox. Regarding Hyundai cars, there is an opinion that changing the oil in their gearboxes is no more difficult than other cars, this also applies to the Accent model and modifications of the Tagaz plant.

    Mechanical box

In order not to feel the accent of heavy gear shifting, extraneous noise and simply failure of the manual transmission in your Hyundai car, an oil change should occur every 90-100 thousand kilometers. To change the fluid in a manual transmission, you need a standard set of tools, as well as a supercharger. It is much more convenient to perform these actions on a lift, overpass or pit.

Some motorists mistakenly advise, if there are no amenities, to park the car on a slope, but this is highly not recommended, since there is a high probability of old oil remaining in the gearbox.

Therefore, it is still worth looking for basic structures for repair. And if the owner has coped with this, then the process itself looks like this:

What kind of scratch remover is this?

We constantly receive questions in the comments about what kind of “liquid glass” products this is, and in general what a bunch of auto-related advertising is now on the market. As a result, we decided to test in practice how true this is. Let's just say we used 3 means. One product proved to be so-so; after application, a burnt spot remained in this place. The second product, when applied, showed no effect at all.

How to check the oil in the box on a Hyundai Solaris: manual and automatic transmission

According to technical regulations, the Hyundai Solaris gearbox is filled with oil for the entire service life of the vehicle. Depending on the type of gearbox, the oil level is checked at different periods and using different methods. In order not to end up with expensive repairs, let’s check the oil level on time and correctly.

Checking the oil level in the automatic transmission on a Hyundai Solaris

Filling new oil through the dipstick.

When servicing any transmission, automatic or manual, a filling syringe is very useful, since adding or changing oil using a simple funnel is unlikely. Unless you have to construct an extension for the neck of the funnel from a hose.

Checking the transmission level in an automatic transmission is carried out at least every 60,000 km, but it is advisable to do this more often, and an oil change may be necessary after repairing the gearbox or wear of the transmission fluid.

    Algorithm

The check is carried out in the following order:

    1. We warm up the engine to operating temperature, the engine should be warmed up to 70–80 degrees, and the check is carried out no later than 10–15 minutes after stopping the engine.
    2. We place the car on a level surface and with the engine running, set the automatic transmission selector to position N or P.
    3. Carefully wipe the area near the dipstick with a rag. This is necessary to ensure that no debris gets into the box.
    4. We turn off the engine and when the oil drains into the automatic transmission pan, remove the dipstick from the gearbox housing.
The automatic transmission dipstick is marked with a red arrow.
    5. We diagnose the condition of the oil.
To do this, take a white napkin and blot the dipstick. The oil should be transparent; if it has darkened, has a burning smell, or if small solid particles remain on the napkin, it is advisable to replace the oil. If there are small brown fractions, suspension, this will indicate increased wear of the clutches. This is what pure oil looks like.
    6. Top up if necessary.
If necessary, add oil to the automatic transmission. That's it.
    7. We wipe the dipstick with a clean rag and put it back in place, all the way into the tube. Now we check the oil level. Normal level - the oil film is between the two NOT marks. If the oil level is low, it must be topped up. It is important not only to maintain the optimal level, but also not to exceed it, since there is a risk of accelerated wear of the oil seals and automatic transmission mechanisms.

out on a cold engine, then the oil level should be between the two “cold” marks C. The principle is the same - if the level is below normal, add it without exceeding the permissible limit.

    Oil type

Automatic transmission oil standard ATF SP-III.

The oil used in the Solaris automatic transmission is ATF SP-III standard from any manufacturer.

Checking the oil level in a manual transmission on a Hyundai Solaris

The manual transmission uses oil of the SAE 75W-90 (original - HYUNDAI GENUINE PARTS MTF 75W-90 ), according to the API application standard - GL4 .

    Useful tips

Pay attention to the aluminum sealing gasket on the plug - if it is too compressed, it must be replaced. We tighten the control hole plug.

This way you can quickly check the oil level in the gearbox yourself and top it up if necessary. Good luck to everyone and enjoy your travels!

Checking the automatic transmission oil: level and condition of ATF fluid in the box

Automatic transmissions on modern cars are confidently pushing aside the usual “mechanics”. The reason is obvious, since this type of transmission greatly simplifies and facilitates the driving process. Also, automatic transmissions are quite reliable. The main thing is to follow the basic operating rules, as well as timely service the automatic transmission.

In this case, maintenance should be understood as checking the oil level in the automatic transmission, assessing the condition of the transmission fluid, as well as regularly replacing the ATF and automatic transmission filter. Next, we will talk about how to properly check the oil level in an automatic transmission, as well as what to pay attention to when checking the condition of the oil in the box.

Why do you need to check the oil in an automatic transmission?

Let's start with the fact that any gearbox (mechanical, robotic, hydromechanical or CVT) requires the use of gear oil. In the case of “mechanics” or “robots,” transmission oil acts as a lubricant, protects loaded parts, washes away wear products from surfaces, etc.

THIS IS INTERESTING: How many liters of oil are in an 8 valve engine

The oil also circulates through the channels of the valve body under pressure, thereby forcing the desired gears to engage due to the effect of the fluid on the clutch packs (this is how the automatic transmission is controlled).

It is quite obvious that in a hydromechanical gearbox the requirements for the level and quality of oil are significantly increased. In this case, the owner must constantly monitor both the ATF level in the gearbox and the condition of the fluid.

Ignoring these recommendations can lead to a shortened service life, the appearance of jerks and kicks when changing gears, as well as unexpected failure of the automatic transmission.

It is important to understand that most automatic transmission malfunctions occur as a result of a decrease in the oil level in the box. Also, a situation often arises when the level exceeds the permissible norm, which also has a detrimental effect on the condition, quality of work and resource of the “machine”.

In some cases, the culprit is a simple mistake or incorrect measurement of the oil level in the automatic transmission. In other words, you need to know how to check the oil in an automatic transmission, and do it correctly.

Oil level in automatic transmission: how to check

First of all, to check the oil level in the automatic transmission, it is recommended to separately study the operating manual for the specific vehicle. The manual usually contains complete information on how to correctly measure the automatic transmission fluid level, what volume of oil to pour into the automatic transmission on a particular car model, what ATF is recommended to use, etc.

So, as for the general recommendations that are relevant for the vast majority of cars with automatic transmission:

    • The oil level in the automatic transmission is often checked to see if it is “hot”. This means that not only the engine, but also the transmission must be warmed up to operating temperatures. To fully warm up the “automatic” you need to drive about 20-25 km.
    • Next, the car is placed on a flat surface, the automatic transmission selector is switched to “parking” mode (P), and there is no need to turn off the engine. The engine should be allowed to idle for 3-5 minutes.
    • Then you need to pull out the automatic transmission oil dipstick and wipe it with a dry, clean rag. Make sure that there is no lint or other debris left on the dipstick. After this, the probe must be reinserted until it stops for 5 seconds. and re-extract. As a rule, the dipstick has Cold and Hot marks. The first mark allows you to make a rough check of the cold level. This is usually necessary when changing the oil in an automatic transmission.
    • The second mark requires an accurate check after the oil in the box has warmed up. Normally, after warming up the automatic transmission, the ATP level should be between the Cold and Hot marks. Significant deviations are not allowed, either downward or upward.

Checking the oil level in an automatic transmission: useful tips

Note that the dipstick for checking the oil in an automatic transmission is usually red, while the dipstick for checking the oil level in the internal combustion engine crankcase is yellow. It is also advisable to wipe the neck before removing the dipstick to prevent dirt from getting inside the box.

Please note that if the level after warming up the automatic transmission is maximum (closer to the Hot mark) or low (located at the Cold mark), then the oil must be either topped up or pumped out. In both the first and second cases, ignoring this recommendation can lead to malfunctions, increased wear and breakdown of the automatic transmission.

If the oil level in the automatic transmission is below normal, then:

    • A violation of the temperature regime occurs, the fluid loses its properties, and the risk that the automatic transmission oil pump will capture air increases, which will lead to foaming of the transmission oil. The result is that the pressure in the system will drop, as the foamed liquid will compress. Low ATP pressure, in turn, leads to malfunctions of the automatic transmission, overheating of the gearbox, accelerated wear, etc.
    • If the oil level in the automatic transmission is too high, then the liquid may also foam as a result of contact with the rotating elements. In this case, the consequences will lead to similar results as in the case of reducing the level below the recommended level. Also, the foamed liquid will increase in volume, the excess will come out through the box breather, which will lead to oiling of the automatic transmission.

Let us also add that it is a mistake to consider the Cold level to be the minimum indicator for a warm automatic transmission. A decrease in the ATF level in the box after warming up to this level indicates an urgent need to top up the transmission fluid.

As for foaming, when checking on the dipstick you can see individual large air bubbles. If the ATP level is normal, then this does not indicate that the oil in the box is foaming. If the level deviates from the norm and the oil is foamed, then such foaming appears in the form of small and evenly distributed bubbles.

In this case, the car engine must be turned off for 15-20 minutes. During this time, the oil in the box settles, then the level is checked again with the engine turned off. Afterwards, the appropriate manipulations are performed, that is, liquid is added or excess is pumped out. The main task is to bring the ATF level in the automatic transmission back to normal.

    • When checking the level, be sure to evaluate not only the level, but also the condition of the working fluid itself. The ATF fluid must be checked for contamination, changes in color and odor. Normally, transmission oil is reddish in color, transparent, and has a characteristic odor.

If, for example, dirt particles and metal shavings are noticed on the dipstick, then this indicates that there is significant mechanical wear in the box. A change in the color of the fluid from red to brown, obvious darkening or blackening indicates overheating of the oil in the automatic transmission. A distinct burnt smell often indicates that the clutches of the automatic transmission are slipping and “burning.”

One way or another, the contaminated fluid needs to be replaced. At the same time, the automatic transmission filter is also changed. At the same time, changing the oil in an automatic transmission should be carried out only taking into account the requirements of the car manufacturer itself. If you fill in ATF that is not suitable for its properties, then this can lead to breakdowns of the automatic transmission and expensive automatic transmission repairs.

    Let's sum it up

As you can see, checking the oil level in an automatic transmission is not a complicated procedure and can be done independently. In this case, you should not only adhere to the basic recommendations, but also note that some car models with automatic transmission may have not two marks on the dipstick, but only one.

There may also be some differences in the method of checking the oil level in the automatic machine. For example, some manufacturers recommend checking the oil level in the gearbox “while it’s hot,” but the engine must be turned off. Before checking, you may also need to put the car not in “parking” mode, but in neutral gear N.

We also recommend reading the article about how much it costs to change the oil in an automatic transmission. From this article you will learn about the available methods for changing transmission oil (full and partial), as well as how much it costs for automatic transmission oil, an oil filter, and what the cost of replacement work is. For this reason, it is highly advisable to first study the operating manual for a specific vehicle or obtain qualified advice from specialized specialists. We also note that different types of gear oils may differ slightly in color and smell. However, regardless of the type of liquid, the oil must be clean and transparent, without foreign impurities, metal shavings, foam, burnt odor, etc.

It is highly advisable to remember what color the fresh fluid was during replacement, and then note any possible changes during checks. If any were noticed, then it is better to take the car to a service center and have the automatic transmission diagnosed.
