Changing the oil in a Renault Duster manual transmission contrary to the regulations

When to change the oil in a Duster gearbox?

According to the maintenance regulations for Renault vehicles, transmission oil in manual transmissions and automatic transmissions does not require replacement throughout the entire life of the vehicle. But to perform a number of operations, for example, to replace the drive oil seal, it is necessary to drain the oil from the box. The need to change the oil in the box may arise due to harsh operating conditions of the vehicle or with extremely high mileage.

Replacement procedure

The repairman will need a pit (or a lift). Having gained access to the lower part of the car, you need to remove the engine protection (if equipped).

The replacement procedure is as follows:

  1. Place a container under the drain hole.
  2. Unscrew the plug from the hole.
  3. The oil is drained.
  4. When the liquid reaches the required level when adding, the drain cap must be screwed back on.
  5. At the same time, it is worth changing the o-rings.

If you use a high-quality lubricant and replace it regularly, you can count on the Duster to “run” for a long time and without problems. If there are no conditions for performing this operation yourself, it should be performed at a service station. Signs of a gearbox malfunction should never be ignored.

Procedure for changing lubricant

  1. To completely change the oil, you first need to drain the old fluid. The oil must be hot so that as much of it as possible can spill out, along with dirt deposits and metal shavings. To do this, you need to drive 5-10 kilometers to warm up the engine and gearbox. Then place the car on the lift
  2. Prepare tools - a syringe, an 8 mm square, new oil and filters, seals, as well as a towel and rubber gloves
  3. We go under the car, remove the engine crankcase protection, then unscrew the drain plug. To do this you will need a tetrahedron
  4. After removing the plug, used oil will begin to flow out of the hole into a pre-prepared pan.
  5. After draining the liquid, the hole is screwed in. You may need to replace the plug gasket before doing this to avoid leaks. The plug is screwed in with a wrench with a torque of 20 Nm.
  6. Fill with new oil from the official manufacturer
  7. Check the level with an L-shaped wrench and screw the plug back on. If the fluid level is normal, the process of changing the oil in a Renault Duster manual transmission with a 1.6-liter engine has been successfully completed.
  8. You can monitor the fluid level for 2-3 weeks and add oil if necessary.

Frequency of the procedure

The manufacturer does not provide for changing the oil in the manual transmission throughout the entire life of the vehicle, suggesting an initial check of the level after 15 thousand kilometers. The next check is performed at 60 thousand km, and then repeated every 30 thousand km. But when the vehicle moves, abrasive wear of gears and synchronizers is observed, and the lubricant degrades under the influence of temperature changes. The service life of transmission oil depends on the operating conditions of the vehicle.

For example, owners of crossovers used in off-road conditions change the transmission oil after 30 thousand km (together with servicing the transfer case and rear axle gearbox). If the car is driven in urban conditions, then the replacement frequency increases to 45-60 thousand km.

From the factory, the Renault box uses lubricant with a high pour point. When changing gears in winter, it is necessary to apply force to the lever, which is an additional reason for changing the oil in the manual transmission crankcase.

When repairing the box (when disassembling the unit is required), an unscheduled fluid replacement is performed. In this case, the remains of old lubricant and contaminants are removed from the crankcase and hidden cavities. The housing is equipped with a ventilation plug: if the car falls into a deep puddle or swamp, contaminated water may enter the crankcase. If foreign impurities are detected in the lubricant, it is necessary to drain the old working fluid.

Selecting gearbox oil

The manual transmission on the Renault Duster uses copper alloy synchronizer rings, which require lubrication with special additives. It is recommended to use TransELF NFJ 75W-80 fluid (API GL-4 standard). Crankcase capacity depends on the number of gears and is 2.5 liters for the 6-speed TL8 unit and 2.8 liters for the 5-speed JR5 unit.

TransELF NFJ 75W-80 oil is designed specifically for Renault vehicles.

It is allowed to use lubricants from third-party manufacturers with identical viscosity parameters. It is not recommended to introduce additional additives into the liquid.

Checking the oil level in the box

To check the lubricant level in the mechanical transmission housing, you must:

  1. Place the car over the inspection hole and remove the metal protective screen located under the power unit.
  2. Unscrew the plastic plug located on the side of the case by hand. It is recommended to wipe the surface of the box from dirt with a dry cloth. Since the oil level increases when the lubricant heats up or foreign liquids enter the internal cavities of the unit, it is necessary to place a plastic or metal container under the hole.
  3. Using an L-shaped hook (for example, an Allen wrench), check the amount of lubricant. You can control the level with your finger by inserting it into the hole. The oil should be at the lower edge of the channel or 3-4 mm below. No traces of water are allowed on the instrument or fingertip. The insufficient volume of the substance should be replenished using a syringe (a lubricant identical to the liquid in the unit is filled in).
  4. Tighten the plug, first checking the condition of the seal. A torn or deformed ring must be replaced.
  5. Install protective screens on the machine.

When to change the oil in a Renault Duster gearbox

The oil in a manual transmission does not change as often as in an engine, but it also gets tired from loads and dirt.

30,000 km is the optimal mileage before an oil change, according to reviews from owners of well-maintained Dusters. Of course, you can change the oil less often, but there is always a danger of exposing the gearbox to increased wear. The fact is that oil wears out not only during operation, but when the car is idle. In any case, it comes into contact with air, which means that oxidation of filler materials is inevitable. Let's not forget about wear products, sediment and dirt.

This is what the oil filler plug looks like after 30 thousand of simple operation.

Drain plug after 30 thousand mileage

The oil may be as clean as the tear of a Romanian virgin, but the additive package no longer performs its functions - it does not lubricate, does not wash, and does not cool, and besides, the anti-corrosion properties are lost. All this greatly affects the life of the gearbox. That is why knowledgeable owners recommend replacing them at least once a year. Considering that the average driver drives up to 1.5-2 thousand per month, then the replacement interval per year does not seem too short.

Brake fluid

The fluid is replaced every four years or after a mileage of 90,000 km. You can fill in any DOT-4 standard liquid. For a complete replacement it is better to take 1 liter. The price of such a bottle ranges from 300–600 rubles. Our examination has shown that it is simply impossible to buy bad brake fluids in a decent metropolitan store.

When replacing, it is necessary to flush the brake system circuits until clean, clear fluid flows out.

Renault Duster can show high reliability only with timely replacement of operating fluids. Don't be lazy to do it on time. And I also wish not to run into a fake.

Oil selection

Before filling, you need to decide on the brand, quality and type; for this you need to look at the operating instructions or service book. You also need to take into account what type of gearbox is used in the car: 5 or 6 speed manual transmission, or automatic transmission.

According to the manufacturer's recommendation, the following oils are poured into the gearbox: TL8, TL4, Tranself, GL-4.

You can fill in something else, but it must only be a transmission one and there must be permission for use for this brand of car. Recommended lubricant for manual transmission TransELF NFJ 75W-80, for automatic transmission ELE Renaultmatic D3 SYN or ELF Tranself FE 80W-90.

Changing the oil in the Duster manual transmission

It is necessary to check the lubrication level in the “mechanics” every 15 thousand kilometers.

The car plant does not provide for changing the lubricant. But from time to time it becomes necessary .

For example, changing the oil in a Duster box is required if the lubricant has a different viscosity or the box is broken.

What you will need for work:

  • tetrahedron by 8 . If you don’t have this in the toolbox, you can simply sharpen the M10 bolt;
  • syringe for filling the transmission.

Algorithm of actions:

  1. Remove the crankcase protection from the engine.

    Removing the crankcase protection

  2. To accurately check the level of remaining lubricant and add it if necessary, you need to pull out the filler plug and place a container just in case. The plug is sealed with a special washer. If the washer is deformed, it needs to be replaced.

  3. Next, you should check the lubricant level itself; it should be level with the lower edge of the filling groove.
  4. Topping up is required using a syringe until the lubricant appears on the edge. It is worth considering that pouring lubricant through the breather hole is strictly prohibited.

  5. Then you need to put the plug in place.
  6. To change the oil, you need to loosen the drain plug, unscrew it and drain everything into a prepared container.

  7. Screw in the plug and pour lubricant into the Duster manual transmission.

Replacing the cabin filter is described in detail in this text.

Replacement Regulations

The frequency of oil changes in the Renault Duster transmission depends on operating conditions. According to official data, new oil needs to be filled in after 50-60 thousand kilometers, but such regulations are valid only for countries with a favorable and stable climate. In Russia, the oil has to be changed much earlier than scheduled - for example, after 20 thousand kilometers. In any case, the fluid level must be regularly monitored.

Carrying out a complete oil change on a Renault Duster

To completely change the transmission fluid in an automatic transmission on a Renault Duster, you will need:

  • drain the used oil from the crankcase;
  • remove the side cover;
  • rinse the inside of the part from traces of old oil;
  • replace the working fluid filter;
  • replace the cover;
  • Fill the crankcase with fresh lubricant.

Draining remaining old oil

To drain the liquid in the crankcase, a plug located in the lower part of the housing is used. The algorithm for removing old oil is identical to the steps for partially replacing the working substance. Then you need to wipe the stamped side crankcase cover with a dry cloth and unscrew the mounting bolts. Care should be taken when performing work, since up to 100 ml of liquid remains in the casing.

Cleaning the tray and removing chips

The DP8 gearbox used on the Renault Duster is not equipped with a pan. The crankcase consists of 2 halves connected by bolts. Access to internal components requires removal of the unit from the vehicle. To service the solenoids, a side cover (made of steel sheet) is used. After removing the casing, wipe the inside with a rag moistened with gasoline and solvent. Many people recommend replacing the side cover gasket, but practice shows that even repeated removals do not lead to leaks.

Changing filters

The transmission design includes a flat fine filter (catalog number - 8201219252), which is mounted inside the crankcase. To remove the element, you will need to dismantle and disassemble the box. As a rule, it is changed only during a major overhaul of the gearbox. It is recommended to use an original Renault filter to clean the fluid from contaminants.

Oil for transfer case and rear gearbox

Oil changes in the transfer case are not provided for during the warranty period. Based on experience, it is advisable to replace it every 30 thousand km. The oil used is TRANSELF UNIVERSAL FE 80W90, 1 liter volume.

For the rear gearbox, the automaker provides a replacement period every 60,000 km, or twice as often for severe conditions. The oil used is similar for the transfer case - TRANSELF UNIVERSAL FE 80W90.
