Gearbox of a VAZ 2110 car, a unit that lasts for a long time. However, there is an important requirement: after a certain mileage, it is necessary to change the oil in the 2110 box. This work is done with your own hands and takes no more than an hour. Usually the procedure is performed after 75 thousand mileage, but sometimes this figure changes. It all depends on the operating loads on the machine. In some cases, it is necessary to replace it even after 40 thousand km.
Lubricant functions
Content
The VAZ2110 gearbox consists of parts that constantly interact with each other. As a result, they wear out.
To reduce abrasion of elements, transmission oil is filled in, which performs the following functions:
- a certain temperature level is constantly maintained in the gearbox;
- eliminates the risk of rust formation as a result of metal corrosion;
- noise reduction during operation;
- vibration decreases;
- protection against shock loads is provided;
- There is constant washing of working areas due to the washing out of small particles of metal.
It is important to know what kind of oil is poured into the VAZ 2110 gearbox. Each type has its own degree of viscosity. The operating temperature is maintained at 80-120 degrees. In harsh climates, it is difficult to maintain such a temperature with high oil viscosity. This will make the gears difficult to operate.
If failures are observed at the checkpoint, this occurs for the following reasons:
- the amount of liquid substance in it has decreased;
- low-quality lubricant product.
In the first case, it is necessary to constantly monitor the level, and in the second, follow the passport instructions.
Gear oil group
In order to understand in more detail which gear oil is best for the VAZ-2107, it is necessary to consider several important characteristics of the lubricant. In particular, this applies to the group of lubricant compositions, which are:
- GL-4 – oils with a large number of additives. Excellent for use in boxes whose operating modes do not require high torques. There are also oils that, on the contrary, are more suitable for high torques;
- GL-5 is a group of oils intended for hypoid gears. If the car is equipped with a gearbox with a hypoid gear, then only GL-5 can be filled into the gearbox.
It is extremely important to choose the right oil group. This will ensure long-term operation of the gearbox even in difficult conditions. At the same time, do not forget about regular replacement, but we will talk about this a little later.
Types of oils
During the procedure, you should know what kind of oil to pour into the box of the VAZ 2110.
They are divided into 3 types:
- Synthetic . Characterized by a high degree of purification. The composition includes various additives that protect parts from corrosion. Replacement is carried out every 65-75 thousand km.
- Semi-synthetic . The percentage of additives is much lower, so the oil is changed more often. It is advisable to carry out this procedure every 45-55 thousand km. The advantage is lower cost.
- Mineral . Refers to unrefined oils. Loss of properties is observed after 20-30 thousand kilometers. After this it must be replaced.
In surveys conducted among motorists about which oil to put in the box of a VAZ 2110, the majority expressed their preference in favor of semi-synthetics. This was motivated by the fact that in harsh climates and difficult roads there is increased wear of gears. Therefore, after 50 km, an oil change is necessary.
Criteria for evaluating transmission oils for manual transmissions
Standard oils for manual transmissions have two main indicators, which determine their ability to work in certain transmission components: API oil class and viscosity. These are the most common parameters in the classification of gear oils.
A mechanical transmission is essentially a set of highly loaded gears whose shafts rotate in rolling bearings. The control mechanisms, the rocker and the forks, are much less loaded. Therefore, no special emphasis is placed on their lubrication, since any transmission lubricant is usually sufficient for the normal operation of these mechanisms.
Also in manual transmissions, the design of synchronizers plays an important role. The essence of the synchronizer is to equalize the rotation speed of the mating gears before engagement. If the gears rotate at different speeds, creating mesh on the move is problematic. Typically, failure of synchronizers is characterized by tight gear engagement with a characteristic metallic grinding noise.
The synchronizer works simply. Before mating the gears, when changing gears, the synchronizer surface first comes into contact with the side surface of one of the gears and, due to friction forces, equalizes the rotation frequency of both gears. After this, the gears engage easily and without any extraneous sounds. But if there are too many anti-friction additives in the oil, the synchronizer will begin to slide along the side surface of the gear. The rotation speed will not be equalized. The box will start to malfunction.
It turns out that gear oils must satisfy the following criteria to the maximum extent:
- protect loaded gears from wear and scuffing;
- effectively lubricate rolling bearings;
- do not interfere with the operation of synchronizers and other control units;
- perform its functions for a long time.
The higher the quality of the combination of these evaluation criteria, the better the gear oil.
Manufacturer's choice
To figure out what kind of oil to pour into the VAZ 2110 gearbox, you should know that for such cars it is recommended to use 2 groups:
- SAE80W-85 (GL-4/GL-4/5);
- SAE75W-90 (GL-4/5).
These designations apply GL-4 to front-wheel drive vehicles. GL-4/5 indicates the versatility of the lubricant. It is used under conditions of increased loads. SAE digital parameters indicate the viscosity of the product.
To make a good choice and understand which oil is best to pour into the VAZ 2110 8-valve engine, you should familiarize yourself with the options for transmission oils that are presented in the table.
Name | Characteristic | Photo |
ZIC GF TOR 75W90 | This oil ranks 1st among all others. It is inexpensive and can be used in any temperature conditions. In the process of work, he showed his best side
Petro-Canada Traxon XL 75W90 | Manufactured by a Canadian manufacturer. It also performs well in frosty weather and can be used at any temperature.
Liqui Moly Hochleistungs-Getriebeoil GL4+(GL-4/GL-5) 75W-90. | Manufacturer Germany. The oil is of high German quality. The disadvantage is the high price of the product |
When answering the question: what kind of oil to pour into the VAZ 2110 gearbox, you should remember that you should not skimp. In severe frosts, it is not possible to change gears. Until the box warms up, time will be lost. High-quality lubrication will facilitate smooth movement of the lever.
The best choice for domestic classics
Mechanical gearboxes, which are installed on domestic cars, have several irrefutable advantages. Firstly, this is an extremely reliable unit that does not require expensive maintenance. Even if there is a need for major repairs, it will be relatively inexpensive.
However, regular maintenance should not be neglected. It is advisable to purchase lubricant from trusted places and not skimp. The replacement interval is 3-4 years or 150 thousand kilometers, whichever comes first. This is not motor oil that needs to be changed every 8-10 thousand miles. An excellent choice would be Castrol or Motul. From budget and high-quality, I can recommend.
Amount of oil to be filled
The question often arises: how much oil to pour into the box of a VAZ 2110. The total volume is 3.3 liters. However, 3.5 liters of oil are poured into the box. This is due to the fact that the unit is five-speed. At an increased level, the gears of the last gear are better washed.
It is not recommended to do additional overflow. This is due to the fact that excess oil will penetrate through the seals of the drive wheels, and at the same time squeezing them out. If an overflow has already occurred, you should use a medical syringe with a long tube to pump out the excess amount through the control hole.
To check the level you need to perform a few simple steps:
- The transmission dipstick is located near the thermostat and starter. He gets out.
- Wipe well with a dry cloth.
- It is set to its original position and one and a half dozen seconds are counted.
- It is pulled out again and checked. The liquid level should be at the max mark. A slight excess is allowed.
- The dipstick finally returns to its place.
If the test is carried out in the absence of a dipstick, then in order to understand how much oil needs to be added to the VAZ 2110 box, the car needs to be driven into an inspection hole or overpass. If this is not possible, then using a lift is allowed.
Further actions are as follows:
- Using a 17 key, unscrew the control plug.
- If the amount is normal, a drop appears from the hole. The oil level is exactly at the bottom of the hole.
- The plug is installed in place.
If you need to top up, you must remember what kind of oil was poured into the VAZ 2110 gearbox. Using a different brand is prohibited. The same viscosity must be maintained. Topping up is carried out using a syringe or funnel until the oil begins to pour out.
Synthetic or mineral water
There are no restrictions on the choice of base. From the point of view of characteristics, as well as operational properties, there seems to be no difference. However, using the example of the same motor oils, we know that stable properties are retained for a long time only by synthetic bases, or oils created on the basis of semi-synthetics.
Mineral water works well at medium loads and in temperate climates. In extreme heat, the base quickly “burns out”, ceasing to be a reliable link for additives.
And operation at temperatures of -25°C and below is difficult due to the tendency to thicken in the cold. It is synthetic transmission oils that force you to start the car in winter with the clutch pedal depressed. Otherwise, you can quickly damage the starter.
Synthetics are devoid of these disadvantages, have a longer service life, but the cost is corresponding. VAZ owners often prefer cheaper oils and shorten their service life. The savings are negligible, but there is always fresh oil in the box.
As usual, the truth is in the middle. The best solution is a compromise semi-synthetic. The service life and wear resistance are almost like pure synthetics, and the price is close to mineral water. The same Lukoil TM 4 - 12SAE80W-85 is produced on a mixed basis.
And the price is reasonable, and the characteristics are normal. If you do not trust the domestic oil industry, purchase foreign analogues on the same basis. A little more expensive, and no negative emotions.
Rules for pouring oil into the box of a VAZ 2110
In order for the gearbox to last as long as possible, it is necessary to use only certified oils. Know which oil is best to pour into the box of a VAZ 2110. While driving, make only smooth accelerations and move at an optimal speed of 100-120 km/h. If it is not possible to find the required liquid, you should try to find one that is similar in parameters.
The following rules also apply:
- Attention is drawn to the seasonality of the lubricant. Summer is used in summer, and winter is used in winter. Universally applicable at any time of the year.
- Before starting work, the engine warms up well so that when draining the waste, all waste particles come out.
Tool preparation
It should be remembered that if the drain plug is located in a convenient place and access to it is open from the inspection hole, then the location of the filler hole is in a less accessible place.
For pouring you will need the following tools and materials:
- wrench with 17mm head;
- clean rags;
- hard, thin wire;
- capacity up to 5 liters;
- funnel or syringe;
- thin hose, up to 30 cm long;
- new oil in the amount of 5 liters.
Draining waste
To change the gearbox oil, it is better not just to start the engine, but also drive it for 5-7 km.
Then the following actions are performed:
- The car is driven into a pit, overpass or placed on a lift. After this it is silenced.
- The plug is removed from the breather and cleaned of dirt.
- The empty container is picked up and brought to the drain plug, which is carefully unscrewed.
- The oil draining time is up to 15 minutes. You need to wait until the drops stop completely.
- The cork is washed well and screwed on.
Washing process
It is necessary to clean the box from small metal particles. A special liquid is used for this.
Washing is carried out as follows:
- The front wheels are hung so that they do not reach the ground.
- 1 liter of flushing fluid is poured through the neck.
- The engine starts, the gear is engaged, and this mode is maintained for up to 15 minutes.
- The car is turned off and the fluid is completely drained.
Adding fresh oil
You can pour oil into the VAZ 2110 box using a funnel, if there is a filler neck, or a syringe with a straw if there is none.
In the first case, you need to follow the following rules:
- A funnel is inserted into the filler neck.
- 3.5 liters of oil are poured through it.
- As soon as it settles, the level is checked with a dipstick.
If there is no filler neck, use a syringe with a tube.
The operating procedure is as follows:
- A hose is inserted into the control hole and oil is pumped in with a syringe.
- The procedure is carried out in several stages until the oil reaches the lowest point of the control hole.
- The plug is screwed tightly.
After filling in fresh oil, you should start the car and drive it for several kilometers. It is necessary that the new transmission substance fills the corners of the box and lubricates all the gears.
How to choose the type of oil for a VAZ-2114 gearbox
What base the oil will have doesn’t really matter, so you can buy both mineral and synthetic. If you look at cost and consumption, then it is more profitable to opt for a mineral substance. What criteria should you pay attention to?
- What is the relative sliding speed?
- The magnitude of the specific loads acting in the internal space of the mechanism.
These criteria are influenced by the best oil viscosity selected specifically for your car, as well as the required number of additives. Extreme pressure additives are a desirable feature because while the sulfur components contained in the fluid cause metal defects, they also form scuff marks, which over time form a thin film that slows down the wear process. This allows the mechanism to work longer even in the harshest climatic conditions, and the issue of metal defects fades into the background.
If previously TAD-17I was used as a lubricant for transmissions of domestic cars, today it is successfully replaced by high-quality TM5-18.
What other types of gear oils are there:
- GL-4 – suitable for the gearbox of front-wheel drive vehicles.
- GL-5 – are considered the most universal, suitable for domestic brands of cars, and are of the best quality.
In addition to mineral lubricants of the format Rexol TM-5-18, Norsi and Lukoil TM-5-18, there are masses that are not so thick - Wells TM, Spectrol-Forward, Tekso Geartex EP-C. Also on store shelves you can find synthetic and semi-synthetic lubricants for Motulgear, Teboil EP, BP Energear SGX gearboxes.
What happens if the replacement is untimely?
Untimely oil change in the LADA Priora gearbox leads to faster wear of transmission parts. Oil that has lost its working properties cannot protect the gearbox.
Consequences of untimely box maintenance:
- Wear accelerates and parts quickly fail, especially bearings
- Metal dust resulting from wear clogs oil lines, causing seals and oil seals to be squeezed out
- The gearshift lever begins to vibrate, and the sound of the transmission turns into a howl.
- Gears do not shift or are thrown out of position
If the gears and bearings are worn out, then changing the oil will not affect the operation of the transmission in any way. In this case, damaged elements must be completely replaced.
Viscosity characteristics 75w and 90
According to SAE, TMs are divided into types and, accordingly, their purpose depending on viscosity. Since we will be talking about 75W-90 gear oil, we will first of all look at its characteristics.
75W – this indicator is known as “winter”, it shows the degree of fluidity at low temperatures. The lower the value in front of the letter “w”, the more fluid the transmission is in the cold. For this type of oil, the threshold should be at -40 °C.
The second indicator of the viscosity range is 90 , also called “summer”, indicating the maximum tolerated positive outdoor temperature at a temperature of 100 degrees Celsius. The parameter itself also does not reflect the true value, you just need to know that according to reference data, this threshold will be up to +35 °C.
It would seem that why 75W90 oil is the most suitable for our latitudes , why not create a universal one with an even wider temperature spectrum? But it's not that simple. Protection against friction between gear surfaces directly depends on the lubricity of the gear oil. Although this indicator significantly improves with increasing viscosity, the law of resistance comes into force, and transmission power losses increase due to the waste of energy squeezing it out from under the gear teeth. Also, viscous oil thickens very much in the cold. Less viscous, it feels good at sub-zero temperatures, but has a less durable protective film and worse lubricating properties. To balance these two indicators, special additive packages are also used.
Transmission fluid must perform the following functions:
- exclude friction, jamming, scuffing, pitting (deep metal corrosion) and other damage;
- reduce energy loss and increase efficiency;
- remove heat from friction surfaces;
- reduce noise and vibration during gear operation.
Therefore, TM 75W90 from different manufacturers, of course, is somewhat different in its properties and, naturally, in its price tag. In addition, 75W90 gear oil is often synthetic, although in some cases, a number of manufacturers may indicate it on the label as semi-synthetic. But in fact, it differs from synthetics only in the content of synthetic substances of 20% - 40% and the amount of additive from 2 to 15%.
In addition to the fact that these fluids are classified according to the SAE system, there is a division of transmission oils according to the API system with the index “GL” (in the Russian version - the index “TM”).
