All the power of the torque is transmitted to the drive wheels through the transmission, which for the VAZ 2107 consists of the following parts:

The only exceptions are all-wheel drive VAZ models (Niva and its modifications). The gearbox of the VAZ 2102 car had the best power characteristics, but with the departure of this model from the assembly line, the main pair with a gear ratio of 4.44 also fell into oblivion.

And the last thing I wanted to especially note when concluding the chapter on main gears: hypoid gearing has large longitudinal slip, which significantly worsens the lubrication conditions during operation of the gearbox. These circumstances, in turn, put forward corresponding requirements for the strength of the created oil film, and therefore a more serious approach when choosing a particular brand of transmission oil for filling into the gearbox. Currently, during their manufacture, main gears are subjected to a special chemical treatment - phosphating. This allows the use of less viscous oil for operation, while avoiding sticking and, possibly, welding of gear teeth. This is especially true during the most dangerous period, when their mutual grinding and running-in occurs.

With a lot of their advantages, hypoid gears (main pairs) require special attention with regard to heating. The normal operating temperature of the main pair fluctuates during gear operation in the range of 90-95 degrees. Of course, the temperature range shown is typical for average driving conditions. During a long trip and, especially, in hot weather, the temperature of the main transmission can significantly overcome the barrier of 100 degrees.

Based on the above, the following rule follows: after repairing the VAZ gearbox, it is necessary to monitor the heating of the unit. To do this, drive at a speed of 60-70 km/h for 20-30 minutes. You should check the heating of the gearbox in the area of ​​the neck of its crankcase, which, in turn, should not exceed 90-95 degrees. The heating of the gearbox is checked like the heating of an iron: the water entering the test zone should not boil.

Transmission malfunctions

The box on the seventh model Zhiguli is considered a reliable unit. If you maintain it regularly and treat it with care during operation, then repairs will not be needed for a long time. The drive gear is mounted on two tapered roller bearings, and an elastic spacer sleeve is inserted between their inner rings. When the nut on the pinion shank is tightened, this bushing is deformed, providing preload to the bearings. An adjusting ring is installed between the drive gear and its bearing, which determines the axial position of the drive gear. The final drive gear is bolted to the differential housing, which is mounted on two tapered roller bearings. The preload in these bearings, as well as the amount of clearance between the teeth of the drive and driven gears, are adjusted by ring nuts screwed into split bearing beds. The gear ratio is the ratio of the teeth, for example, in a “six” gearbox the large gear is marked 2106 1143. Therefore, to determine the pair, 43/11 = 3.9 is necessary. The larger the number of the pair, the more high-torque the car will be, but it will lose maximum speed. Most often, you can find two types of gearboxes in stores: with a pair of 4.3 and 3.9.

Work order:

  • We hang up the rear axle, drain the oil from the crankcase, remove the wheels and brake drums, and remove the axle shafts. We disconnect the driveshaft from the drive gear flange and move it to the side.
  • Using a “13” wrench, unscrew the eight bolts securing the gearbox housing to the rear axle beam.
  • Remove the gearbox assembly.
  • We install the new gearbox in the reverse order of removal. Apply sealant to the threaded part of the crankcase mounting bolts. After installation, do not forget to fill the rear axle housing with 75W-90 transmission oil. Crankcase volume is 1.3 liters.

Five-speed manual transmission

The seventh model Zhiguli has a five-speed gearbox with five forward speeds and one reverse.

It is made of duralumin and has similar covers on the front and back. The clutch cover is attached to the front of the box using studs. A steel cover is installed on the bottom of the device. There are sealing gaskets between the box body and each lid.

The front cover is connected to the clutch housing using a press fit. There is a hole in it for the input shaft to exit and install the cuff.

Inside the box, shafts with gears, synchronizers and gear shifting devices are installed in a certain order. There is an oil filler hole on the right, and a drain hole with a magnetic plug on the bottom.

At the bottom left of the cover comes the speedometer cable, which is driven by the secondary shaft using a gear.

The gear shift lever is on top. Consists of a gear selection device, rods and a locking mechanism. A handle is attached to the lever on top. This entire structure is attached to the lid using three studs.

Transmission oil for gearboxes

To select gear oil for the Lada gearbox, you need to take into account the region where the car will be operated.

The best oil is synthetic, but semi-synthetic and mineral oils will not harm the Seven’s transmission. The amount of oil in the VAZ 2107 gearbox is about 1.6 liters. The oil change time is carried out according to the instructions in the technical instructions supplied with the car.
