Replacing the timing belt on the 8-valve Lada Granta: engines 11183 and 11186

All the latest models of front-wheel drive cars produced by the car plant located in Tolyatti have a timing belt in the gas distribution mechanism. Lada Granta fully applies to these models.

The machine is equipped with several modifications of engines, which can have 8 or 16 valves in the cylinder head. Many owners service and repair this model themselves, so it will be useful for them to learn how to change the timing belt on a Lada Granta with 8 valves.

Replacing timing belt Lada Granta 8 valves, timing diagram and marks

Replacing the timing belt of Lada Granta 8 valves is required once every 75 thousand kilometers. If you ignore the scheduled replacement of the belt, tension roller and sometimes the pump (coolant pump), you may end up with serious repairs to the Lada Granta engine. After all, a broken timing belt almost always leads to damage to valves, valve seats and even pistons. Therefore, the timing drive must be treated very carefully. Every 15 thousand it is necessary to inspect the belt for breaks, cracks, peeling or oiling.

Detailed diagram of the Lada Granta timing drive further.

To replace the timing belt, we need to remove the alternator drive belt or accessory drive belt for the Grant with air conditioning. Using a “5” hexagon, unscrew the four screws securing the front upper timing drive cover and remove the plastic casing.

To avoid damage to the crankshaft position sensor, it must also be removed. With the ignition off, release the clamp of the wiring harness block and disconnect the block from the sensor connector. Use a 10mm socket to unscrew the sensor mounting bolt.

We remove the sensor from the oil pump cover boss hole and put it in a place where there are no steel filings that could subsequently disrupt the operation of the sensor.

Before dismantling the belt, it is necessary to check the engine valve timing - set the piston of the 1st cylinder to the TDC (top dead center) position of the compression stroke. Using the “17” head, turn the crankshaft clockwise by the bolt securing the generator drive pulley until mark 1 on the camshaft timing pulley aligns with boss 2 on the rear timing cover.

To ensure that the crankshaft is in the correct position, remove the rubber plug for the inspection window at the top of the clutch housing. Mark 2 on the flywheel should be located opposite slot 1 of the scale, which is visible in the window of the clutch housing cover.

Before unscrewing the bolt securing the generator drive pulley, ask an assistant to secure the crankshaft from turning by inserting a screwdriver through the window in the clutch housing between the flywheel teeth.

Using a 17mm socket, unscrew the bolt securing the generator drive pulley, remove the pulley and washer.

Use a 5mm hex to unscrew the three screws securing the front lower timing cover. Remove the cover.

Using a 15mm spanner, loosen the tension roller mounting bolt.

At the same time, the tension roller will rotate and the belt tension will weaken. Remove the timing belt from the crankshaft and camshaft pulleys. We remove the belt from the Granta’s engine compartment.

Attention! After removing the timing belt, do not rotate the crankshaft and camshaft to avoid the pistons sticking into the valves. The dimensions of the Lada Granta timing belt with an 8-valve engine are width 17 mm, number of teeth 113.

To remove the timing belt tension roller, unscrew the bolt securing it and remove the tension roller along with the bolt.

We rotate the plastic clip of the roller, holding it by the eccentric. The roller should rotate silently, evenly and without jamming. Otherwise, the roller must be replaced.

At the same time, you can check the serviceability of the coolant pump by twisting and shaking it by the pulley. We install the tension roller in place without completely tightening the bolt that secures it. For different engine modifications, the cylinder head has two threaded holes for the tension roller mounting bolt. Screw the roller mounting bolt into the upper hole of the cylinder head. In the photo below, the hole is indicated by a red arrow.

We install the Grant timing belt in the reverse order. Before installing the belt, make sure that the alignment marks of the crankshaft and camshaft are aligned. We put the belt on the crankshaft toothed pulley, then tensioning both branches of the belt, put the rear branch on the coolant pump pulley and wind it behind the tension roller, and put the front branch on the camshaft pulley.

If necessary, turn the camshaft pulley in the direction of the smallest stroke until the belt teeth coincide with the pulley cavities. To tension the belt, turn the tension roller counterclockwise. To do this, insert the rods (diameter 4 mm, distance between the rods 18 mm) of a special key into the grooves of the outer disk of the roller (for clarity, shown on the removed roller).

This key was used to adjust the belt tension in all front-wheel drive VAZs; you can buy it at any auto parts store.

You can also use pliers to remove the retaining rings to adjust the tension of the Lada Granta timing belt. We tighten the belt by turning the belt tension roller counterclockwise until the cutout of the outer disk of the roller coincides with the rectangular protrusion of its inner sleeve, and tighten the roller mounting bolt with a torque of 34–41 Nm.

Excessive belt tension will reduce belt life, as well as the life of the coolant pump bearings and tension pulley. Insufficient belt tension also leads to premature failure and can cause irregular valve timing. Turn the crankshaft two turns clockwise. We check the belt tension and the alignment of the installation marks of the crankshaft and camshaft. With the generator drive pulley removed, it is convenient to control the correct position of the crankshaft by aligning mark 1 on the crankshaft toothed pulley with rib 2 of the oil pump cover. Photo for clarity below.

Snapshot

The surface of the toothed part of the belt should not have folds, cracks, undercuts of teeth and separation of fabric from rubber. The reverse side of the belt should not have wear, exposing the cord threads, or signs of burning. There should be no delamination or fraying on the end surfaces of the belt. If defects are found on the belt or there is a significant discrepancy between the belt tension control elements (see photo above), the belt must be replaced. You should also replace the belt with a new one if traces of engine oil are found on it (before installing a new belt, the cause of oil getting on the belt must be eliminated) or when replacing the coolant pump.

Attention! Failure of the timing belt (breakage and cutting of teeth) can lead to valves sticking into the pistons due to mismatch of the rotation angles of the crankshaft and camshaft and, as a result, to expensive engine repairs.

We replace the timing belt in accordance with the maintenance regulations every 75 thousand km or if defects are detected on the belt.

To avoid damaging the crankshaft position sensor, it must be removed.

Simple replacement of the timing belt Lada Kalina 2, Granta with an 8-valve engine

Yesterday one of our regular customers came to us with a recently purchased second-generation Kalina to replace the timing belt, roller and pump, plus all the fluids, but more on that in another article. This engine was also installed on the Grant, so this article will be relevant for it as well. The speedometer shows 60,000 and I believe that for this engine this is the optimal replacement interval, even though all reference books say about 75,000.

Let’s make a reservation right away that when the timing belt breaks on this car, the valves bend. It is recommended to check the condition of the belt every 15,000 kilometers.

To work, we will need a set of keys and sockets, as well as a 5-point hex and a key for the tension roller. The entire procedure takes approximately one and a half hours.

The engine is similar to the eighth.

First, remove the protection, drain the antifreeze, and for convenience you can remove the right front wheel. Next, loosen the locknut of the generator belt tensioning mechanism. Using a 10mm socket, unscrew the tensioner pin and remove the belt.

We unscrew the four bolts with a 5mm hexagon and remove the upper protective cover of the timing belt.

Set top dead center (TDC). We turn the crankshaft by the pulley mounting bolt clockwise until the mark on the camshaft sprocket and the timing belt protective casing coincide.

Unscrew the crankshaft pulley bolt. We block the wheels with stops, tighten the handbrake, engage fifth gear and, with a slight movement of the wrench and a one and a half meter pipe extension, unscrew this bolt.

Next, use the same 5mm hexagon to unscrew the bolts securing the lower timing case cover and remove it.

Remove the protective washer.

The marks on the crankshaft sprockets should be aligned with the oil pump casting.

Praise be to the designers of AvtoVAZ, finally rollers with a tension indicator appeared on the engines, now you don’t need to tighten them by eye and check the tension by twisting the belt, not even thirty years have passed since the invention of such a design. We unscrew the tension roller bolt and dismantle the latter; we also remove the old timing belt. The photo shows that the belt has stretched out because the tension marks have diverged; when checking the condition of the timing belt, if you see this, you will just need to tighten it.

To replace the pump, we need to remove the camshaft sprocket, and also unscrew several bolts of the inner casing and remove it.

Three bolts out and the pump replaced. The green arrow indicates the hole for the tension roller bolt.

Preparatory stage

Replacing the timing belt VAZ 2110 8 valves

The Lada Granta car can be equipped with 2 types of power units: 8 valves and 16. The difference in the timing devices of these engines is that the 16-valve version has 2 camshafts, respectively, 2 gears instead of one in the 8-valve version. In addition, in addition to the tensioner, the mechanism contains an additional deflection roller.

They should also be changed together with the timing belt, since worn rollers can cause the belt to break or skip on the gears. Then the valve timing is disrupted, the engine begins to “shake,” and the power noticeably drops. The replacement operation is completely accessible to any car owner who has the desire and certain tools:

  • a set of the most popular open-end wrenches and sockets;
  • mounting blade (mount);
  • flat screwdriver;
  • jack;
  • round nose pliers with curved pointed ends or a special fork for the tension roller;
  • cloth gloves.

1 - toothed pulley of the engine crankshaft; 2 — tide on the oil pump cover; 3 — toothed pulley of the cooling water pump; 4 - tension roller; 5 — toothed pulley of the exhaust camshaft; 6 — rear timing belt cover; 7 — toothed pulley of the intake camshaft; 8 — guide roller; 9 — toothed belt; A - TDC mark on the crankshaft toothed pulley; B mark on the oil pump cover; C, F - mark on the rear timing belt cover; D — mark on the gear pulley of the exhaust camshaft; E - mark on the intake camshaft toothed pulley

Grant's car

is one of the popular models produced by the Volga Automobile Plant today at ours.

The latter will be far from superfluous, since you will have to loosen bolts and nuts in a limited space, and there is a danger of injuring your hands. Work can be done on any level area or in a garage. The presence of an inspection hole is not necessary, but it is much more convenient if there is one.

Timing belt

How would you act on your own without clear instructions in the service book? On both an 8-valve and a 16-valve engine, I would change at least the pump, and better yet, the belt and tensioner between the 60th and 70th thousand kilometers. According to the period, if the mileage is small, for the sixth year of operation.

Dear GrantaVody. Tell me who has encountered...

My friend Grant has 1.6 - 8kl. (norm). Mileage 70,000. The timing belt broke - the valves were bent... Question. Since the grant itself, how long is it better to change the timing belt? What is the approximate cost of repairs? in case the belt has already broken and the valves are bent, and the cost of the belt itself.

I read somewhere on the Internet that at 1.6 - 8kl - if the timing belt breaks - the valves do not bend.

The process of replacing the timing belt on the Lada Granta

The timing belt of a Lada Granta car is the same consumable material, as is the generator drive belt, filters and oils for various components and assemblies. The timing belt needs to be changed from time to time; the mileage between changes is 60 thousand km, according to the advice of the manufacturer. But when operating the machine with increased loads, this mileage may decrease.

Generator drive pulley Unscrew the main bolt of the generator pulley

You can unscrew the bolt of the generator pulley using ordinary keys, which were mentioned above in the list of necessary tools. If the bolt does not come out of the generator pulley, then you must perform the following steps:

dismantling the plug in the clutch housing

The flywheel teeth are fixed with a mounting blade, the presence of which was justified by the list of necessary tools.

After performing these steps, the generator pulley bolt will stop turning, since the crankshaft will be fixed with a mounting blade.

Removing the generator pulley

The generator pulley must be dismantled immediately after removing the mounting blade. After dismantling is completed, the pulley must be placed on a clean surface. The presence of debris in the unit assembly can cause it to jam.

dismantling the lower timing cover

The process of dismantling the lower timing cover is carried out by removing three mounting bolts. Put the belt on the pulley. I bought a belt on Grant 825, which could be a Lada Granta. This design occurs in Grants 21116 and 11186 engine models.

timing belt removal

The last stage is dismantling the timing belt and then determining the condition of the tension roller. The belt removal process occurs in the following order:

Removing the timing belt from the timing pulley

removing the belt from the crankshaft.

It is at the second stage that the Grant timing belt is dismantled along with the tension roller. We carry out a visual inspection of the roller, in particular, we determine the external condition and the level of play of the mechanism.

At the time of reinstalling the lower timing cover, it is necessary to adjust the tension of the belt itself.

The reasons for premature belt breakage on the Lada Grant remain a mystery, which is based not only on the poor quality of the material used in the belt, but also on the low quality of assembly of the aggregate units through which the timing belt passes.

Among other reasons for premature timing belt breakage, one can note the desire of the car manufacturer to keep up with Euro 3/4. It was the desire to adjust the car to these standards that led to the above-mentioned negative aspects in the daily operation of the car.

Despite the manufacturer’s claims about the quality of Grant’s timing belt and the threshold of his personal mileage of 200,000 thousand km, it breaks already at 70–80 thousand km. Priora/Kalina timing belt, which is better? A Gates roller belt can be a good and worthy replacement solution.

It is the Lada Granta from Priora that the timing belt will fit the Lada Granta and will not cause premature failure. The price of a timing belt for a Grant allows it to be changed every 50,000 thousand km, which, in turn, will reduce the likelihood of other cost items arising regarding the repair of engine valves.

Reviews

Positive
1.Alexander: in two years of using the car I have never changed anything. I carry out prevention systematically, as prescribed by the instructions. I believe that a moderate driving style, high-quality oil, and original parts can work wonders.
2.Kirill: at 65,000 km I tightened one rod because it started to click when it was “cold”. I haven't changed anything until now. Everything is original installed.
3.Vasily: I replaced the timing belt in a year and a half. I thought it would be difficult, but it turned out to be the opposite. I recommend that motorists carry out preventive maintenance on their own.
4.Gennady: adjusting the valve clearances on Grant is not easy, but I was able to do it myself, without outside help. Instructions and video tutorials on the Internet are always at hand.
5.Ignat: after a year of using the car, the valves began to knock. At the service station the technician said that there was no need to change it, they limited themselves to tightening it. I still ride, no complaints.
6.Vladislav: for three years of using the car, I installed all the spare parts myself and did not contact the service center. Which is what I recommend to other Grantmakers. There were no major breakdowns, they were so insignificant. Fuel and oil filters don't count.
Negative
1.Victor: My timing belt fell off within the first year after purchase, which turned out to be unexpected. I installed the new one myself, the process is not complicated.
2.Ivan: at 45,000 the valves began to knock, so I took it to the service station. The master said that the second and third valves were defective. Replaced with new ones. Buy Lada Granta in 16 cl.
3.Vasily: at the second service, I replaced the timing belt at the service center. Three teeth suddenly broke off, the quality is poor.

Instructions for carrying out work

Replacement

How does the belt on 2190 differ from replacing it on a 16-valve unit? Below are instructions for the first type of motor; for our client, the differences from the second will be considered separately. First, you need to remove the positive cable from the battery and disconnect the connector from the crankshaft position sensor.

KEY-DOP

Then remove the timing belt guard and set it aside. In order to avoid mistakes when installing a new belt, you need to align the marks on the engine housing with the mark on the camshaft gear

. This can be done by turning the bolt holding the pulley on the engine crankshaft with an open-end or socket wrench, and do not forget to turn the gearbox into neutral.

The second method, using a suspended wheel, was described above. When the marks coincide, you need to remove the rubber plug located on the gearbox and open the inspection window. The flywheel is visible in it; the mark on it should also coincide with the slot on the body. The next step is to remove the belt from the generator drive pulley. To do this, you need to loosen the lower mounting bolt of this unit, and unscrew and pull out the upper one.

Then the generator housing can be moved forward and the belt can be removed from the pulleys. Immediately, using this moment, you can inspect the removed belt for defects and damage, and, if necessary, replace it. Next comes the operation to loosen the bolt holding the crankshaft pulley

. It often happens that you can’t just do this with a spanner wrench, especially after factory tightening. There are several ways.

  1. Insert a flat, powerful screwdriver or pry bar into the flywheel inspection window, blocking it. Hold the screwdriver with your right hand and loosen the pulley bolt with your left hand using a 17 mm wrench.
  2. If you have an assistant, the procedure is greatly simplified. One will engage 4th gear, press and hold the brake pedal, while the second one will unscrew the pulley. It’s much more convenient to do this, both hands are free to work.
  3. Some car enthusiasts put a spanner on the pulley bolt and rest it against some element of the body or suspension, after which they turn the crankshaft with the starter in neutral gear. The method is quite dangerous, it is permissible to use it in the most extreme case, when it is not possible to loosen the bolt by other methods.

Replacing the timing belt for Lada Largus 8 valves.

After the bolt is unscrewed, the pulley is removed and the working part is wiped with a rag. Then you need to loosen the tension roller bolt, the belt tension will weaken and you can remove it. Since the roller also needs to be changed, it needs to be unscrewed. The last element that will need to be removed is the bottom cover of the mechanism; it is attached to the engine with three bolts.

This completes the disassembly of the unit. Before installing a new roller and timing belt, you need to make sure that the pump drive shaft rotates freely and does not jam. Otherwise, you will have to make a decision to replace the coolant pump.

Conclusion

Despite the simplicity of the algorithm for replacing the timing mechanism on an eight-valve engine, it is still better to contact a service station for professional installation. The timing belt is not a mechanism that you can skimp on the quality of tuning.

Subject to the manufacturer's recommendations and moderate driving style, the timing service life is more than 80,000 km.

Frequent breakdowns that occur are due to the fault of the owners of the technical equipment, as a result of violation of the rules for using the machine.

How to determine that a break may soon occur

Urgent replacement of the timing belt for a Granta car of 8 and 16 cl. may be necessary if the following phenomena occur:

  1. Decrease in vehicle power. A poorly tensioned or worn drive can make the engine difficult to start and reduce power output.
  2. Incomprehensible noises from the timing belt on the Grant, emanating from the engine compartment. Clunking, ticking or strange rustling noises often indicate that the Granta timing belt is damaged and rubbing against the casing or other parts under the hood
  3. Visible damage. The part may have abrasions, cracks and “shaggy” areas that are visible to the naked eye.

If, upon careful inspection, it is discovered that the teeth on the Grant timing belt have been cut off or at least one of the other listed problems, it is necessary to urgently replace the part with a new one, which is quite possible to do yourself.

Which kit to buy

In addition to the toothed belt, a tension roller and a coolant pump are purchased. The main supplier of rubber products is the RTI plant in Balakovo. Products from GATES, BOSCH, DAYCO, CONTITECH have proven themselves well. If the pump in the engine cooling system is replaced, antifreeze will be needed to top it up.

A broken timing belt and its subsequent replacement is a fairly common problem among owners of a Grant car, both with an 8-valve engine and with an engine with 16 valves installed.

Very often among car enthusiasts you can hear a conversation that, due to a torn belt, the engine seized or the valves were “bent”. Why this happens and how to prevent such a phenomenon, as well as how to change the part yourself, will be discussed in our article.
