In particular, we are talking about planetary devices, the operating principle of which is similar to a traditional automatic transmission.

The operation of the unit itself is based on the principle of simultaneously changing the diameters of the driven and drive shafts. Their diameter is changed by a special drive. When the car is stationary, the drive shaft has the smallest diameter, and the driven shaft has the largest diameter. If the vehicle begins to move away and accelerate, then as the engine speed increases, the diameter of the drive pulley begins to increase, and the diameter of the driven pulley begins to decrease.

1. So, the main problem of the Outlanders is the CVT. Although Mitsubishi equated the service life of this device to the service life of the entire car, in practice this is far from the case, and it is unlikely that this device will last 300,000 km. In practice, CVT failures begin to occur at 40 and 70 thousand km. Moreover, the more you ride off-road, the shorter the service life of the variator, which, with intensive use on bad roads, decreases by almost 2 times! Therefore, the good cross-country ability of this crossover is offset by an increased chance of getting a CVT malfunction, which, alas, cannot be treated. The CVT can be changed entirely, and this is very decent money (let’s say, the cost of a CVT with all-wheel drive is 88,000 rubles). What are the signs of a CVT malfunction that should prompt you to urgently go to a service station? If there is slippage and sudden jerks when the crossover moves, traction disappears, vibration begins at high and low speeds, a signal lights up on the instrument panel and, finally, the car comes to a complete stop, then you are out of luck and you need to work on the variator. At some service stations, the variator is rebuilt, but the manufacturer does not recommend doing this. How can you make sure that this evil fate does not befall you?

Firstly, warm up the gearbox in cold weather; to do this, with the brake pressed, turn on gear mode “D” or “R” and let the car run a little, and don’t “tear” your cvt in the cold season (before warming up, don’t increase the speed above 2500), secondly, check the transmission fluid level, thirdly, do not load the box when driving on country roads and, in general, if you can, refuse towing. Carefully monitor the reading of the variator sensor and then, to paraphrase the famous song, increase “It’s a matter of chance, it’s a matter of chance... “lucky with the variator.”

2. Another problem with the Mitsubishi Outlander is its noise. Despite improvements in this direction, unfortunately, the sound insulation of the crossover leaves much to be desired.
