Kia Rio 3 air filter: where is it located and how to replace it

According to the KIA Rio vehicle maintenance regulations, the engine air filter must be changed every 15 thousand km. mileage or once a year. If the car is operated in conditions of increased environmental pollution and aggressive driving habits, then the filter must be replaced twice as often.

In dusty rural areas, as well as in megacities, when driving frequently in traffic jams with a lot of exhaust gases, smog and dust, it is recommended to change the filter element every 5 thousand km. mileage

The main symptoms of filter element contamination are: increased fuel consumption, decreased engine power, decreased vehicle dynamics during acceleration, increased toxicity of exhaust gases, sudden dips when pressing the accelerator pedal. Replacing the air filter is extremely simple and even a novice car enthusiast can do it.

No additional tool is required to complete the job. To replace it, you need to open the hood and find on the right, near the battery, a plastic box containing a filter element. You need to carefully unfasten the metal clips, lift the lid and remove the filter.

Install the new one in the reverse order, after wiping the inside of the box with a damp cloth. It is necessary to ensure that the rubber seals fit evenly into the grooves and do not protrude outward. Efficient operation of the air filter reduces damage to the engine associated with entry into the combustion chambers.

Original filter from a Korean manufacturer: cost, article number

By purchasing an original part, the client can avoid various difficulties and problems associated with installation. A part made in Korea will 100% correspond to the declared characteristics. In addition, air filters of this type have a slightly longer service life.

The only “minus” of such solutions is the relatively high cost. Moreover, analogues are sometimes 2-4 times cheaper.

It is important to remember: you can encounter counterfeit goods on the market. Fakes not only have much worse performance parameters. But they can also cause premature engine failure. The main signs of fakes:

  • poor quality print and poor packaging;
  • lack of batch number or other mandatory information on the box;
  • The rubber filter frame has burrs and other manufacturing defects.

It is advisable to carefully examine the packaging and the product itself. Original filter for D4F4 engine:

Air filter Kia Rio 2012-2014 selection and replacement of filters for Kia Rio

We continue to maintain the Kia Rio car and today we will change the engine air filter. It's not difficult and we don't need any tools.

So, we’ll start by purchasing an air filter. I have already said that it is not worth saving on filters, since they are not expensive, and problems with the engine that can be caused by low-quality filters will be very expensive, because the ingress of dust and dirt will clearly not increase the service life of the engine.

This is an original filter that is installed in the service department of official KIA dealers. It is produced by Mobis, which also produces spare parts for Hyndai Solaris.

Replacing filters on Kia Rio 2011-2014

The actual replacement process is quite simple. First, open the hood and find the air filter housing. It is located next to the battery on the right side of the engine compartment of the car. In the photo it is indicated by an arrow.

On the right side of the filter housing, there are two iron latches that need to be released by simply pulling them towards you. Then lift the plastic cover of the air filter housing up and you will see the old Kia Rio air filter.

Now remove the old filter and install a new one in its place. Do not blow out or clean the filter element under any circumstances, do not save “pennies”, install only a NEW filter element.

Reassemble everything in reverse order, just be sure to ensure that the rubber band around the perimeter of the filter lies neatly and is not bent or sticking out anywhere. When snapping the filter housing cover, make sure that you get the guides into the grooves of the housing on the engine side.

This completes the replacement procedure; if you have any questions, ask, we will answer absolutely everyone.

Work progress

Replacing the KIA Rio X Line air filter yourself, as well as the cabin filter, is extremely simple. No tools are needed to work. This allows you to make a replacement anywhere, including on the road.

Open the hood.

The filter is located on the driver's side and is covered with a plastic cover.

It is held on by 2 clips. Unclip them, pull the cover towards you, moving it out of the grooves on the opposite side, and lift it up.

Remove the old filter and clean its installation location, removing dust and dirt from there.

Note. You can blow out the installation area with compressed air, but in this case, be sure to close the flap on the cover with your hand.

Install a new filter.

Reassemble everything in reverse order.

This completes the independent replacement of the KIA Rio X Line air filter.

Replacing the Kia Rio air filter 3rd generation

As a rule, replacing the air filter (not to be confused with replacing the cabin filter) is performed along with changing the engine oil .

According to the maintenance regulations in the Kia Rio-3, the air filter is replaced every third maintenance, i.e. every 45 thousand km.

However, depending on the operating conditions of the vehicle, especially in highly dusty conditions, the air filter must be changed more often .

Why do you need an air filter?

The air filter performs the function of cleaning air, which then enters the injector to form a combustible mixture (a mixture of atmospheric air and gasoline). When the filter is clogged, its throughput decreases, this leads to the formation of an enriched combustible mixture, which does not completely burn in the cylinders, loss of engine power and increased fuel consumption.

There have been cases of air filter rupture, which led to fragments of the filter element getting into the engine and leading to expensive repairs.

It is recommended to check the condition of the air filter during scheduled maintenance so as not to miss the moment of timely replacement. During the check, you can vacuum or perform preventative blowing of the filter using a regular home vacuum cleaner.

Replacing the air filter

Even a child can replace the air filter in a Kia Rio III generation. It will take you no more than 5 minutes to do everything.

The cabin air filter for Kia Rio-3 has a code in the parts catalog - 281131R100.

Procedure for replacing the air filter:

  • Open the hood of the car.
  • The air filter in the engine compartment is located on the driver's side.

  • Unfasten the side spring fasteners of the filter housing.

  • Lift the housing cover.

  • Take out the old air filter.

Let's summarize the possible problems

  • Increased fuel consumption;
  • increasing CO2 emissions;
  • significant reduction in motor power parameters;
  • reduction in the service life of relevant parts in the Kia Rio engine.

As you can see, the severity of the resulting malfunctions due to neglect of timely replacement of the air filter element is very high. When comparing the cost of the filter with the costs that the owner may incur in case of engine repair, the relevance of this procedure increases many times.

The good news is that the “consumables” on the Kia Rio are inexpensive, and the procedure for replacing it is very simple.

Next, we will consider an action algorithm that involves replacing an element not only in previous modifications (2011-2012), but also in more “fresh” versions of the Kia Rio 3 (2013-2015).

Replacing the air filter on Kia Rio 2011-2015

As you know, modern cars do not run on pure gasoline, but on a fuel mixture consisting of gasoline and air. We are accustomed to placing high demands on fuel, cursing unscrupulous suppliers, however, only a few seriously think about the quality of the incoming air masses. And in vain.

One of the main “defenders” and “guardians” of the internal combustion engine is the air filter. Do you need such Kia Rio spare parts?

Just imagine, just 1 liter of recycled gasoline requires about 15 thousand liters of air. Now, try to assess the environmental situation of your city, perhaps a large metropolis, or an industrial area.

By cleaning the incoming air masses from large and small particles, suspensions and dust, the air filter literally protects the engine from damage. In addition, its contaminated surface begins to allow less oxygen to pass through, which in turn leads to a decrease in machine power and increased fuel consumption, not to mention increased carbon dioxide emissions.

Let's try to draw a preliminary conclusion.

Replacing the air filter on Kia Rio

The question of how to replace the air filter on a Kia Rio no longer confuses most motorists. You can perform this simple operation with your own hands within 20 minutes.

Timely replacement will preserve the performance of the car and prevent problems with the engine.

When to change?

How often should the filter on a Kia Rio be replaced? The answer to this question directly depends on the quality of the fuel used and the operating mode of the vehicle. The engine uses not pure gasoline or diesel to operate, but an air-fuel mixture.

Air enters it from the street, sometimes from a polluted city highway, and the air filter is responsible for cleaning it, since a large number of foreign elements will impede the operation of the power plant, their abrasive effect will lead to wear of parts. Maintenance manuals for Korean cars produced in 2012-2017 recommend carrying out this operation every 35 thousand km.

In practice, it is better to do this more often, focusing on the operating mode and the degree of dust contamination in the air.

Signs on which you can decide to replace:

  • the dynamic characteristics of the vehicle deteriorate;
  • fuel consumption increases;
  • engine power decreases;
  • exhaust gases no longer meet environmental standards;
  • the filter is deformed, turning into a cloth clogged with abrasive particles.

You can check the condition of an element visually by comparing its condition with a new element.

How to change the air filter on a Kia Rio?

First of all, you need to purchase a replacement element. For this you will need an original consumable. It has article number 28113 1R 100. You should not skimp on quality, since the operation of the motor completely depends on it.

It is impossible to clean the old filter, just like the cabin filter; it is intended for one-time use. In addition to the part, you will only need a rag to wipe the surfaces. The work can be done in a garage or even a parking lot in any weather.

Algorithm for performing the work:

  • turn off the engine;
  • open the hood;
  • find the part, it is located on the right side of the engine compartment, a little closer to the driver standing in front of the hood than the battery;

  • open the housing in which the consumables are placed. On both sides of the plastic box you can find latches that can be easily unfastened;

  • remove the filter element by hand. Most likely, its working surface has turned into a tangled gray mass, strewn with abrasive particles. If the driver does not detect complete wear, the element can work for some more time. If further operation is not possible or the time specified in the technical documentation has passed, then a new element is inserted;

  • Before replacing, take a damp cloth and thoroughly wipe the surface of the case from dirt and dust. Use only water. Gasoline or solvents should not be used to clean the housing. Let dry;
  • install a new filter, making sure that the rubber seals are in the correct position and fit evenly into the groove;
  • close the case cover, in this case you need to get into the guides, which are located on the back side, and snap the clips into place. Check the tightness of the closure.

The process is simple and in practice it will take less than 30 minutes.

Air filter for Kia Rio 2015, 2016 and 2022

Why is it necessary to change the air filter?

Modern car engines, including the Kia Rio, do not consume gasoline in its pure form as fuel, but a mixture of it with air in a strictly defined proportion. Most Kia Rio owners are puzzled by using only high-quality fuel for their car, but forget about ensuring sufficient cleanliness of such an important component in the power system as air.

Kia Rio: replacing the air filter

The air filter cleans the air that enters the power unit to enrich the fuel mixture with oxygen. If the consumable has not been changed for a long time, it loses its throughput. This leads to oxygen starvation, as a result of which the fuel does not completely burn in the cylinders. The consequence of this is a loss of engine power of up to 20% and increased fuel consumption (by the same 20%).

Need for replacement

Car owners usually replace the air filter along with the engine oil. But if the vehicle is operated in a metropolitan area or in high environmental pollution, the element is changed more often.

The frequency of replacing the air filter in country driving conditions is 15–20 thousand kilometers.

The frequency of replacing the air filter in a megalopolis is 8 - 10 thousand kilometers or when changing the engine oil.

Procedure for replacing the air filter in Kia Rio 3

The location of the consumable is on the right side of the hood, as shown in the image.

The procedure for replacing the air filter in a Kia Rio car:

  1. Open the hood of the vehicle and locate the air filter housing. As shown in the picture, it is located on the driver's side.
  2. Release the spring fasteners on the old element housing and then lift the cover.
  3. Take out the old air filter.
  4. If there is dust or other debris inside the case, it must be thoroughly vacuumed and wiped with a clean, dry cloth.
  5. After this, a new filter element is installed and the housing is assembled in the reverse order (including closing the lid and fasteners).

Features of replacing the air filter in Kia Rio 2

Before you begin the procedure for replacing the air filter in the second generation Kia Rio, you will need to prepare tools such as a screwdriver and keys.

Procedure for replacing the air filter in Kia Rio 2:

  1. The hood opens and the latches on the lid unlatch.
  2. The air filter is pulled out and a new one is installed.
  3. If necessary, the interior space is vacuumed.

It should be noted that the difference between the Kia Rio 2013, 2015 and 2016 lies primarily in the location and size of the air filter. Therefore, each car has its own part, taking into account the product catalog number.

What are the scheduled maintenance dates?

Based on the recommendations outlined in the documentation of the official manufacturer, the element should be replaced after 45 thousand km, when the air filter is initially replaced or 3 years of operation. If the environment is characterized by increased pollution, then the frequency of this event must be reduced to 15-20 thousand km.

For clarity, you should look at an air filter that has been dismantled and used for 40 thousand km, and then compare it with a new analogue.

Kia Rio 1.6 changing engine oil, air and cabin filters

Today we have a Kia Rio car under maintenance, with a 1.6 engine, manual, mileage 50 thousand km. It is necessary to replace the engine oil, cabin filter, air filter and oil filter. We'll show you how to do these steps yourself.

Changing the engine oil

Open the hood and unscrew the oil filler plug. We lift the car or drive into the inspection hole and remove the crankcase protection. Using a special crab puller, unscrew the oil filter:

We place a container in advance where the used oil will be drained. We wash off the oil leaks with carburetor cleaner, take a new filter, we have it from PMC, order number PBA-001. Lubricate its sealing rubber with a small amount of oil and screw it into place. Tighten by hand.

Using a 17mm socket and a ratchet, unscrew the drain plug on the pan:

We wait until the last drops drain, then tighten the cap. We wash off oil leaks in the same way using carburetor cleaner. Lower the car and insert a funnel into the oil filler hole. We will use VALVOLINE 5w30 SYN-POWER oil, item 872552, 5 liter canister.

We managed to pour in about 3 liters and 100 grams. The level on the oil dipstick is at the maximum; after starting the engine, some of the oil will flow into the system and filter, after which the level should level out. Screw on the oil filler cap. We start the engine, wait until it runs for a couple of minutes, turn it off and check the level again, it should be at the middle mark.

Replacing the air filter

Lift the lid and move it back a little. We take out the old filter element:

We tightly plug the air intake with a rag and blow out the filter seat using a compressor. If this is not possible, you can simply wipe it with a damp cloth or vacuum it. We have a new air filter from PMC, order number PAA-087, we install it. We put the cover on so that the guides fit into the grooves and snap the latches.
