In order to quickly and easily unscrew the wheel hub bearing nut (front or rear) on a VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099, you need to know some of the features of this work.

Otherwise, unscrewing this nut yourself can present unpleasant surprises, at least in the form of a broken or bent key, and at most in the form of physical and mental injuries.

The tightening torque for the front wheel hub nut is 226-247 N.m, for the rear wheel it is 186-226 N.m, which is a lot (plus the resistance of rust and dirt must be overcome), because of this you can bend or break a non-reinforced key when unscrewing it. To increase the force, you should put a piece of pipe on the wrench, thereby increasing the leverage.

If the nut and its threads are in good condition, a socket and wrench can be used.

If you manage to loosen the nut, there is no need to unscrew it completely. This can be done during the process of disassembling the suspension with the wheel already jacked up and removed. For example, when replacing the front wheel bearing of a car.

If the nut cannot be unscrewed, you will have to resort to more severe unscrewing methods. For example, heating or cutting with a chisel.

When installing the wheel hub bearing nut back, you need to tighten it to the required torque (to avoid damage to the wheel bearing), bend its collar into the groove of the CV joint shank, apply lubricant and install the protective cap.

Notes and additions

You can easily and without much difficulty unscrew the hub nut using a pneumatic impact wrench. The only problem is that not many people have it.

How to replace

To replace the VAZ 2109 hub you will need the following tool :

  • jack and wheel wrench;
  • a 30 mm socket wrench and a long pipe for it;
  • pliers for removing retaining rings;
  • simple pliers or a 12mm spanner (for unscrewing the guide pins of the rear brake drum);
  • wooden block and hammer;
  • chisel and pry bar;
  • a universal puller for pressing out the hub or a reverse hammer;
  • new hub for VAZ 2109 with article number 21083104014 or 21103104014.

The rear hub of a VAZ 2114 is replaced in the same way, since it, like the wheel bearing, fits with the Zhiguli 2108. The replacement procedure is described in the photo instructions below.

What types of wheel bolts are there?

Let's look at what a VAZ 2109 wheel bolt is.

Moreover, the edges of the head turn into a cone. M12 thread with pitch 1.25 and thread length 22 - 24 mm. Thread pitch is a very important parameter. If you forcefully screw in bolts with a different pitch, you can ruin the threads in the hub, and then you will have to change it.

Such hardware is used for wheels with stamped discs. If cast (light alloy) wheels are used, then for the VAZ 2109 the wheel bolt must be longer (27 - 33 mm). Chrome plated with a conical rotating washer is often used. This washer, located under the head, protects the surface of the disc when the bolt is tightened. Its threaded part must completely fit into the hole in the hub, but no more, so that when the wheel rotates, the bolts cannot touch stationary parts.

It is worth emphasizing that you cannot put old stamping hardware on new alloy wheels. In this case, the bolts can easily unscrew under load and the wheel will fall off while driving. I don’t even want to talk about the consequences.

The clamping part of the bolt can be spherical, but it must coincide with the profiles of the holes in the wheel rim to ensure wheel alignment.

Wheel bolts for the VAZ 2109 are made with a hex head for a 17 or 19 wrench. There are also lightweight hardware with a hollow head for a hex key. There are also bolts in which the head has an internal 10-pointed star. These require a non-standard key.

To widen the vehicle track, longer bolts and spacers up to 40 mm are used.
