The VAZ 2109 belongs to the Lada Sputnik family - a five-door modification of the previous model 2108 from the Lada Sputnik family.
Classic models came off the factory assembly line with standard rims stamped from a steel alloy:
- 4 1/2J-13;
- 4 1/2J-13H2;
- 5 J-13H2.
Before deciphering the markings, you need to understand what technical sizes and parameters of car wheels are accepted. Regardless of the manufacturing method, cast or stamped, they are designated in the same way. There is a mark on the outer surface that displays all the necessary information.
This includes:
- name of the manufacturing plant;
- the state where the release took place;
- date (based on the “week/year” principle, example: 1815 – 18th week of 2015);
- X-ray scan marking (light-alloy cast products are checked for the absence of internal cracks and defects);
- dimensions;
- sign of the control department (for Russia - ROSTEST, for Germany - TUV, international organization - ISO, for America - SAE, etc.);
- heat number and permissible load (lb (pounds), kg, example: max load 1800LB - maximum pressure up to 1800 pounds or 816 kg).
More details about standard sizes
All over the world it is common to use the European designation system. For example, simple wheels for tubeless on a VAZ-2109 are 4 1/2 J-13H2 ET30.
- J – coded parameters for the rim flange in mm (this includes rounding radii, tilt angles, etc.). This paragraph includes a list of dimensions to obtain a highly specialized conclusion when conducting technical tests. There are other categories - D, E, F, etc.
- H2 – double hump or annular offset of the rim flange HUMP (it keeps the tubeless tire from slipping). There are also such variations of humps - H (simple), A (asymmetrical), CH (combined), FH (flat).
13 – bore diameter in inches.
The drawing below clearly shows the main parameters for the structure of the arrangement of technological holes and protrusions.
- ET30 or ET+30 – wheel offset in mm. The dimensions of the distances between the middle of the width of the disk and the mating plane (where the disk and hub are in contact) are indicated, respectively equal to 30 mm. Based on where the product is manufactured, the marking changes to OFFSET (negative) or DEPORT (positive).
For a minus value, a designation with a similar sign is used, for example “-ET30”.
Replacing the front bearing
- We will show you replacing the bearing with removing the shock absorber strut and knuckle assembly. We do not separate the strut from the fist, so as not to disturb the wheel alignment. This is the request of the car owner, although it would be more convenient to replace the bearing with the knuckle removed.
- Place the wheel stop and loosen the hub nut. Thirty head nut.
- Loosen the wheel bolts, jack it up and remove it. After removing the wheel, place a stand under the threshold and lower the car onto it from the jack.
- Apply penetrating lubricant and remove the two caliper bracket bolts. Nineteen bolts.
Remove the caliper and place it so that it does not hang on the hose.Remove the cotter pin from the tie rod nut. This is best done with pliers.
- Apply penetrating lubricant and unscrew the tip securing nut. Fifteen head nut.
- Using a puller, press the tip pin out of the eyelet.
Spray with penetrating lubricant and unscrew the two bolts securing the ball to the steering knuckle. Nineteen head bolts.Move your fist to the side and remove the drive shaft.
Unscrew the three bolts securing the upper support and remove the shock absorber along with the knuckle.
Unscrew the two studs and remove the brake disc. Faces on heels under the head at nine.
Using an extension, knock out the hub.
Using pliers, remove the retaining rings at the top and bottom.
Using a sizing extension, knock the bearing out of the knuckle.
- Using a slotted screwdriver, clean the grooves for the retaining rings, and also wipe the bearing seat.
- Install the upper retaining ring into the seat.
- Lubricate the seat and the outer race of the bearing itself.
- Install the bearing by hand and lightly guide it into the seat with a hammer so that it fits without distortion. You can only hit the outer race of the bearing.
- Take the old bearing and grind the outer race on a sharpener.
- Place the old bearing on top of the new one as an extension and hammer the bearing into the seat. It is necessary to grind the outer race of the old bearing so that it does not get caught in the seat.
- Install the lower retaining ring.
- Clamp the hub in a vice and carefully trim the outer race of the bearing. After cutting, use a chisel to cut it and remove it.
- Lubricate the seats on the hub and bearing.
- Install the hub as shown below and press it into the bearing through the extension. Please note that the extension must rest against the inner race of the bearing.
- Next, reassemble. Remember to use a new hub nut and tighten it after tightening it.
The procedure for replacing the front wheel bearing of VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 is clearly shown in this video:
Mounting values on the disk (bolt pattern parameters)
When installing, it is important to take into account the fitting size recommended by the manufacturer, since differences may be due to different calculation systems (metric or imperial).
- The diameter distance between mounting holes is designated PCD (Pitch Circle Diameter). The accepted scheme on the VAZ-2109 looks like 4x98 or PCD 98/4, i.e. between the central axes of the bolts (4 pieces) 98 mm.
- Fastening elements - metric thread M12x1.25 (bolt stud diameter 12 mm and thread pitch 1.25 mm).
- The central hole for the hub shaft on the disk is designated DIA and for the VAZ-2109 this is equal to 58.5 mm.
Important! Often, car enthusiasts confuse PCD values due to a difference of just a couple of mm. For example, the standard size for the two central holes is just a visually imperceptible deviation of 2 mm - this is PCD at 4/98 and 100. Only 1 bolt will turn out to be completely tightened, and the remaining 3 will be undertightened, which will ultimately lead to an emergency.

Any spare part of a modern car must be perfectly matched to fit and technological dimensions. Unfortunately, the manufacturer does not always take into account the specifics of using materials in spare parts, which affects their service life, reliability, and, ultimately, traffic safety. The chassis of a car is subject to enormous loads, so it is simply impossible not to pay attention to the correspondence of the factory dimensions with the ones being replaced.

VAZ 2108 front wheel bearing size
If we take this issue more specifically, the chassis of cars of popular models and brands most often suffers from low-quality spare parts. First, let's look at this problem using the example of a VAZ 2108 front wheel bearing.
It would seem that there is nothing complicated - the hub has its own standard dimensions, which the roller bearing must correspond to:
internal diameter - 34 mm; outer diameter - 64 mm; Bearing width - 37 mm.
Only by these parameters can you select a bearing, of which domestic factories produce thousands. Manufacturers from China actively help in this, providing products that are not of the best quality and do not stand up to any criticism. Neither the steel grade, nor the number of balls, nor the dynamic performance of such bearings meet the standards. There are bearings without any markings at all, and there are particularly zealous owners who buy them. Such bearings burn out within 1000 km and simply fall apart while driving.
Features of choosing a wheel bearing for a VAZ 2108
Naturally, we will not be able to check the dynamic load on the bearing races and on each of its balls. But you need to remember, like the Our Father, that:
- The VAZ 2108 wheel bearing is marked 25 69 07;
- according to the international marking system it is designated 53 20 66 DA;
- the bearing has a mass of 0.445 kg;
- ball diameter - 9.525 mm;
- number of balls - 28.
The difficulty in choosing bearings is that they are not consumable parts, and they are not changed as often as piston rings or silent blocks. That's why some manufacturers don't even bother making human packaging. In addition, the bearing used in the front wheel hub of the VAZ 2108 is maintenance-free, which means:
- the bearing does not require lubrication;
- does not require preload;
- does not require adjustments during installation and operation;
- must have a very high resource.
Design of wheel bearings for VAZ 2108
All VAZ cars are equipped with only three types of wheel bearings - wheel bearings for front-wheel drive VAZ cars, wheel hub bearings for rear wheels, and wheel bearings for Kalina and Grant cars, which are smaller in size.
All VAZ bearings are of the HUB-1 type, and this type is characterized by the design and installation features. The bearing has a double-row design, is a type of angular contact ball bearings with closed working surfaces and does not have flanges for attachment to the hub.
Manufacturers and prices of VAZ wheel bearings
These bearings belong to the middle price segment, so the demand for them is very high. Because of this, you can often find the fakes we mentioned. However, the transition of the VAZ plant to bearings of this type, instead of roller ones of the old type, made it possible to choose bearings not only of domestic production, but also of many other foreign factories.
The main percentage share of bearings used on VAZ cars lies with domestic manufacturers, among which several factories can be distinguished:
- Saratov Bearing Plant (SPZ) - 28%.
- "Volzhsky Standard" - 2%.
- Samara plant SPZ9 - 8%.
- "Lada Image" - 7%.
- Vologda Bearing Plant VBF - 4%.
Let us only note that Lada Image supplies products directly to the plant’s conveyor belt, and SPZ has the largest share in the spare parts market. It is impossible to say anything specific about the quality of workmanship, because there may be failures at every plant, but even if the bearing turns out to be of poor quality, the enterprise must replace it. Prices for VAZ 2108 front wheel bearings rarely exceed 250 rubles apiece, and imported models may cost a little more, but their quality is appropriate.
So, bearings from Kraft, SCT, Trialli, LGR can cost about 300-350 rubles, but these are world-famous manufacturers, and you can definitely count on the quality of the bearing. Choose the right bearings and let your figure eight roll forward with confidence!
Also, using this method, you can replace the wheel bearing on the road with a simple tool. I have a wheel bearing puller, but I will deliberately change the wheel bearing using improvised means, close to travel and close situations. Explaining and appearing in photos the details of the replacement.
Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. We hang up the front part of the car (namely both front wheels, because otherwise the anti-roll bar interferes with dismantling, pressing the suspension elements upward). We remove the wheel, the brake pad guide together with the caliper and the brake disc (see Removing parts of the front wheel brake mechanism). We tie the guide of the brake pads with the caliper so that they do not hang on the brake hose.
Installation of rims on R14, 15 on the VAZ-2109 model
The standard wheel with parameters 175/70 R13 is not particularly visually “noble” compared to the larger version R14 or R15. This is due to the large height of the rubber profile, which visually “overshadows” the already small dimensions of the disk.
Technical features of the VAZ-2109 model provide for the installation of wheels of categories R14 and R15 - forged or cast light alloy. The width of the discs can be from 5 to 6 inches with an offset characteristic of 35 to 40 mm. The remaining values regarding PCD and DIA correspond to 4x98 with a central connector diameter of 58.5 mm.
In this case, the selection of tires must be carried out on the basis that the overall diameter of the wheel is within the standard value. Failure to comply with this condition will result in the tire starting to rub the wheel arch liners and suspension parts while turning.

Method of calculations
Based on the tire characteristics of a standard 175/70 wheel with a radius of R13, where:
- values 175 and 70 are the values of the tire width and rubber profile height in percent;
- multiplying 175x0.7 together gives 122.5 mm;
- the actual diameter of the R13 disk is 13x25.39 will be 330 mm.
To find out the total diameter of the wheel, you need to add the two obtained values, but the profile height comes in double size, i.e. (122.5x2) is added to 330 and the result is 575 mm.
Calculations are carried out using the same principle for a more visual perception, for example: for models 175/70R13, 175/65R14 and 185/60R14, it comes out to 575, 583 and 577 mm, respectively.
The last value will be most suitable for the VAZ-2109, since it is 10 mm larger in width. This will reduce the braking distance during operation, add controllability, and reduce tire bending when cornering at high speed. Fuel consumption will increase slightly, but potholes and potholes on the road will become less noticeable.
Operating rules
Following these recommendations will significantly extend the life of your light alloy wheels.
- Try to avoid bumps, which requires more careful driving.
- Park carefully and pay close attention to where you park your car.
- Avoid hitting holes and potholes. This is dangerous for a car with any wheels, but if the stamping can still be restored later, the light alloy will have to be sent to a landfill.
- When moving on rails, do not gain high speed. Impacts on metal can cause not only deformation of the discs, but also damage to the suspension.
Maximum and minimum parameters of non-standard disks
Tolyatti auto design engineers installed wheel rims with a radius of R15, but there are no direct reasons not to do this.
The problem is the difficulty of performing this operation without the involvement of specialists; the intervention of qualified craftsmen is necessary. The reason for this is the “conflict” of the rear arches and suspension parts with the new rims, and in some cases it is necessary to violate the factory design of the transmission.
Note! We should not forget about the mandatory technical inspection, and how traffic police officers will look at such an “upgrade”.
The suitable tire size for R15 wheels is 185/55 and even 195/50, but most likely such a large width will cause rubbing along the arch. Below are the recommended wheels for modifications to the VAZ-2109.
How to choose stamped products
VAZ 2109 with stamped rims
Stamped wheels are the most common for the VAZ 2109. Cars are equipped with these from the factory very often. This is due to the low cost of manufacturing such products.
They are not attractive in terms of design and have poor performance, but often car enthusiasts are attracted by their price. It is necessary to install stamped products on VAZs in compliance with the same requirements as for cast ones. Their parameters and sizes are fully consistent.
The dimensions and parameters common for the entire line of VAZ car models allow you to choose a set of wheels without any problems.

What is a hub and why is it needed?
In mechanics, a hub is the central part of a part with a hole (usually it looks like a keyway) for fitting onto a shaft, in particular onto a trunnion. Also, spokes are attached to the hub.
This is what the hub looks like. The part is made of cast iron or steel, turning and milling.
This important spare part ensures the movement and controllability of the car. Its main functions:
- wheel mount;
- its rotation;
- transmission of torque from the transmission to the wheel, that is, the connection between the shaft and the disk.
Hubs are divided into two types - front wheel hubs and rear wheel hubs. They differ in location: the former can be found in the front wheels, and the latter in the rear.
Rear wheel hub
What wheels are recommended to be mounted on a VAZ-2109
The most suitable size wheels are 14 inches (R14). As stated above, installation of 15-inch ones is also allowed, but with low-profile tires. In this option, the stem should be in a gap between 30-35 mm, and tire models will fit this category: 185/55 or 195/50.
Large tires of the R15 series, for example 195/55 or 205/50, are suitable for mounting on the front axle. In order to insert them onto the rear axle, structural modifications to the suspension design and enlargement of the wheel arches will be required. The optimal sizes for installation on the VAZ-2109 are models 185/60 for R14 and 195/50 for R15.
On the ninth fret model, it is beneficial to carry out external tuning by replacing wheels, since this method is budget-friendly. It can be done on your own without any problems, if you do not try to mount very large rims.
DIY rear wheel hub replacement
You can also replace the rear wheel hub yourself. You will need standard tools - wrenches, a small screwdriver, a jack, and so on. The installation algorithm is as follows:
- Take a wrench and loosen the nuts.
- Use a jack to raise the car.
- Take the wrench again, unscrew the nuts completely and remove the flywheel.
- Have someone hold down the brake pedal or place something heavy on the brake to hold the pedal in place.
- Carefully unscrew the nut and remove the brake cylinder and caliper.
- If the car has an ABS/VDC sensor, then take a 10mm socket and unscrew the bolt. Don't forget to clean the sensor from dirt.
- Remove the car from the brake, and then turn the flywheel so that the rubber cap is on the bottom. Put the car on the brakes again.
- Remove the cap, insert a small screwdriver into the hole and turn the gear wheel up until it stops.
- Remove the brake disc.
- If necessary, remove the parking brake pads.
- Find the 4 bolts on the back of the hub unit and unscrew them.
- Carefully remove the hub part (do not damage the rear wheel hub axle).
- Dismantling is complete. To install a new part, you need to perform the same steps, but in reverse order.
- In case of replacement, you can also use a hammer and a wheel nut to knock out 4 or 5 studs from the old part - the studs are quite expensive and they break relatively often, so it won't hurt to remove them.
Structure
The part has a fairly simple structure. Essential elements:
- outer rim (used for screwing in bolts);
- internal part (for bearings);
- holes with slots (for CV joint);
- protective caps;
- sensor (it is sometimes included in the design).
CV joints are constant velocity joints; their main task is to transmit torque.
The set of fasteners for this part consists of two nuts and one washer.
Hubs for different purposes have different technical characteristics. Hubs for passenger cars have the form of a hollow, lightweight cylinder, while for “heavyweights” the diameter of the part is larger.
Design Features
The rear hubs of the V8 are equipped with sealed angular contact ball bearings. Each of them has two rows of balls. This makes the structure as resistant to loads as possible, and also allows them to be distributed with the greatest efficiency.
The rear wheel bearing of the VAZ-2108 is made of heavy-duty steel. Its service life, declared by the manufacturer, is 90-120 thousand kilometers. By the way, these are not empty statements. Oddly enough, VAZ wheel bearings actually last a very long time and, if used correctly, can last twice as long as the stated mileage.
Causes of problems
The hub is a very durable part of a car disk, so breakdowns rarely occur. But still sometimes deformation of the spare part occurs. In addition, the rear hub is more wear-resistant than the front hub, since it is less subject to heavy loads.

"Road factors"
Ingress of moisture and dust eventually displaces the lubricant, and the disc begins to overheat as a result of excess friction.
Insufficient lubrication
It ranks first among the causes of failure of this spare part.
Sometimes it is caused by poor-quality lubricant material.
Excessive loads
In the average area this is unlikely. Usually found in mountainous areas.
Strong “tightening” of fasteners
It often happens that the bolts are screwed in more than necessary - this is how the threads wear out.
If the hub and bearing are an inseparable connection, then there is almost no risk of wear of such a structure.
