Cars manufactured on the territory of the Russian Federation are equipped with a computer. The first on-board computer appeared on the VAZ-2114. In simple terms, the on-board computer can be considered a kind of electronic reference book on the condition of the car. The driver needs it in order to understand the condition of his car, as well as what faults have appeared in it.
The first on-board computers on domestic cars performed the following functions:
- Controlling the amount of fuel poured into the tank.
- An approximate calculation of the distance that can be driven with the remaining fuel in the tank.
- Monitoring the temperature of the coolant in the engine, as well as preventing it from overheating.
The modern on-board computer on the VAZ-2115 is designed for:
- transmitting information about indicators “online”;
- displaying information on the information panel;
- reflections of route parameters, such as current fuel consumption, travel time, number of kilometers traveled, etc.;
- diagnostics of the engine condition with subsequent display of errors on the on-board computer screen.
Among other things, depending on the vehicle’s configuration, its on-board computer may receive the following data:
- information about the time of the next vehicle maintenance;
- information about the need for adjustments to certain vehicle functions;
- warning about the need to renew the insurance policy;
- information from the organizer;
- parameters at which the cooling system fan will automatically turn on.
Operating principle of the on-board computer
Cars such as the VAZ-2109 were equipped with devices that acted as routers. Let us remember that these were carburetor cars. But the VAZ-2114 and 2115 began to be equipped with injection power plants, which required the use of a completely different type of device.
Therefore, the main functions of the on-board computer on these cars are diagnostics, as well as control of the operation of almost all vehicle systems. The principle of operation of the on-board computer on the VAZ-2115 is as follows:
- acceptance of signals using the control unit, their subsequent processing and output of the necessary information to the computer display;
- the ability to make some adjustments;
- processing of signals received from systems that are not controlled by the controller. If an abnormal situation occurs in the car, a sound signal will be sent to the on-board computer, and error information will appear on its screen.
Main settings
The instructions for the on-board computer STATE for the VAZ 2114 and 2115 make it possible to study all the parameters and resources of the BC. The operating principle of the device in question is to relay sensor readings through a control unit. Then the data is processed and displayed on the screen in the form of codes. Using the BC allows you to diagnose systems that are not recognized by the controller. The occurrence of emergency situations is indicated by a characteristic icon displayed on the display and accompanied by a sound signal.
Main displayed data:
- Speed limit, remaining fuel, travel time;
- Power unit speed;
- Interior and engine temperature status;
- Fuel consumption and mileage that the car can travel on the remainder;
- Mains voltage;
- Coolant temperature and throttle valve placement;
- Error codes;
- Cyclicity of air circulation, distance traveled, average speed and other useful parameters.
Equipped with an emergency warning light, the BC notifies the driver of engine overheating, insufficient battery charge, low fuel level, or problems with the cooling system.
Brief instructions for operating the on-board computer
When you purchase a VAZ-2115 car, you will receive instructions for operating the on-board computer along with it. It describes in detail what to do in various situations. And now it’s time to talk about how to properly use the on-board computer on the VAZ-2115. To do this you need:
- Study the instructions with the on-board computer information display turned on. Such an action is necessary if the bookmaker is endowed with numerous different functions, which are impossible to understand on your own;
- greatest attention should be paid to the symbols and icons corresponding to emergency commands;
- The operation of the VAZ-2115 on-board computer is regulated using a special panel with buttons. Once you understand what functions each button performs, it will be much easier to manage the bookmaker.
There is no need to memorize all kinds of error codes. It’s best to simply find the designations of all the errors on the Internet, where, by the way, they are freely available, print them out on a piece of paper and carry them with you in the car all the time. And when you see a particular error code on the computer information board, it won’t take you much time to understand what exactly it means, you just need to look at the previously printed list.
PURPOSE AND MAIN FUNCTIONS
Cars produced in Russia are equipped with such a device. For example, the standard on-board computer of the VAZ 2114 became the first-born in the family of VAZ cars. To put it in simple words, this is a car reference book on wheels. The driver needs it in order to know what is happening both inside the car and outside.
WHY IS IT INSTALLED IN THE CAR?
The on-board computer of the VAZ 2114 of the first versions performed few functions, these were the following:
- Control over the availability of fuel on the vehicle and the distance that can be covered on it. This will help the driver make the right decision in time to refuel or stop driving;
- Monitors the operating temperature of the coolant in the engine and helps prevent it from overheating.
The use of more expensive versions of computers makes it possible to diagnose individual components and assemblies of the machine.
They are endowed with the ability to decipher fault codes issued by the controller, and this allows the driver:
- Be promptly informed about problems that have arisen in a particular machine system, and respond correctly to this. Eliminating the problem in its “bud” eliminates expensive repairs;
- Get savings from using your car.
ABOUT ITS FUNCTIONS
On-board computers of the VAZ 2114 are equipped with and perform the following basic functions:
- Display information about which indicators have instantaneous parameters;
- Displaying current information on the information panel;
- Route parameters are reported. They mean information about mileage, average fuel consumption, travel time and other data;
- Ability to read error codes and diagnose a car engine. This allows you to receive information about all the problems of the power unit without lengthy consultations with “specialists”.
Some of the models have additions to the basic functions, which may include:
- Information about the timing of the next machine maintenance;
- Some adjustments to basic functions;
- Control over the insurance period;
- Availability of organizer functions;
- Possibility to set parameters at which it will be possible to turn on the fan in the cooling system.
Additional functions can be installed on any bookmaker (contact a specialist and they will flash it for you)
What to do if the on-board computer on the VAZ-2115 stops working
Sometimes it happens that even though the car is in full working order, the on-board computer completely refuses to work. What to do in this case?
Of course, you can try to fix the problem yourself. But it’s still much better if a real specialist does this. It is he who will be able to reliably determine the cause of the device malfunction.
But before going to the service center, the first thing to do is check fuse F3, which could simply have blown. It is installed in the power supply circuit of the VAZ-2115 processor. If, after replacing the fuse, the on-board computer still shows no signs of life, you can also check the connectors connected to it. We repeat that if you are not an electrician, and generally do not have much knowledge of electronics, this task should be entrusted to a professional.
Remember, any malfunction that the on-board computer shows can be eliminated, just like a breakdown of the on-board computer itself. But, as they say, it is better to prevent a problem than to solve it later. Therefore, each car should be kept in good condition, undergo technical inspection on time and replace spare parts that are out of order.
Among other things, it is better not to allow spare parts to break at all, but to replace them as they wear out. Only in this case will driving the car be safe from a technical point of view, and during the trip there will be no emergency situations associated with improper operation of the car.
The serviceability of your car is a guarantee of the safety of both the driver and passengers.
The VAZ 2114 on-board computer is an excellent electronic assistant for many car enthusiasts. In order to obtain complete information about the state of the main working components of the machine at the moment, you just need to look at the computer screen. Is it worth installing such a device and how to choose a suitable model for 2109 and 21099?
The best option
The on-board computer on the VAZ 2114 model State 115*24 has many functions that allow the driver to adjust the operating state of some components at his own discretion. But the distinctive feature of this device is the ability to read errors from sensors. Not every model has this function, so it is worth paying attention to this minor detail when choosing an on-board computer.
Of course, this does not greatly affect the operation of the system, but the ability to obtain additional information from sensors helps to find and eliminate breakdowns in a timely manner. Another important detail that the trip computer must have is saving and resetting system settings. In order for the machine to operate as efficiently as possible, the device selects a special operating mode for some devices and components, and then saves them.
If you change the vehicle configuration - installing new parts or replacing fuel with a different brand - you will have to reset the settings. Most devices support automatic reset of operating parameters. If you restore the previous configuration, the computer will automatically return the old settings.
Device installation
You can install the on-board computer on the VAZ 2114 yourself. You will need a meter piece of wire and several screwdrivers. The main actions required from the user are as follows:
- Remove the cover from the instrument panel. The computer will be located here.
- Find a 9-pin block, connect the main wire to the second contact.
- The second end of the wire is pulled under the instrument panel to the diagnostic block.
- If the block is Euro 2 type, connect the wire to connector M, if Euro 3 - to socket 7.
- Additional elements of the device are connected, if any (sensors, etc.). How to connect an on-board computer to a VAZ with sensors is described in detail in the instructions for the device.
- Next, the computer is mounted in the instrument panel, after which its initial setup is carried out.
- The connection of the on-board computer is completed. Installation is carried out similarly for model 2109.
BC errors
If you buy a car that already has an onboard vehicle installed, this is quite good. You don't have to install it yourself.
Plus, it's a great way to check whether the car is as good as the owner claims.
To check the BC for errors, reset the daily mileage on the dashboard and at the same time turn on the ignition. Then press the button located near the windshield wiper lever. The display will show the firmware version of the installed BC, plus error codes, if any.
The main bookmaker errors are shown in the table. Moreover, the most popular of them, which are found on the VAZ 2114, are 4, 6 and 8.
Code | What does it mean |
2 | The car's mains voltage is too high |
3 | Fuel level sensor is faulty |
4 | The coolant temperature sensor has failed |
5 | The outside temperature sensor is faulty |
6 | The engine gets very hot |
7 | Oil pressure has reached a critically low level |
8 | There are problems with the braking system |
9 | The battery is low |
Once errors are detected, appropriate decisions can be made. If we are talking about your car, simply reset the data by pressing and holding the daily mileage button. Without doing this, the errors will persist during the next diagnosis, although you have taken measures to eliminate them by repairing the corresponding components of the car.
Errors when connecting/operating the on-board computer
Error: “No connection with the controller” or “break in the K-line.” This error indicates that the K-line is not connected or a contact break has occurred. Check the wire according to the diagram described above. Most likely the contact has come off the diagnostic block.
Error: “Incorrect readings of the sea temperature sensor.” If your temperature outside is -40, then this indicates that the wire to the temperature sensor has broken, or there is no such sensor at all. If the temperature is, for example, -25, but it’s only -10 outside, then you need to replace the sensor with a working one.
