Almost every modern car is equipped with an electronic speedometer. Perhaps after a certain time it will completely replace mechanical analogues, but for now they are still present even in new models. The operating principle of the electronic device is simpler than that of a mechanical speedometer.

Often, an electronic device has a magnet in its device, which is attached to the output shaft of the gearbox. The magnet rotates with the shaft, and an electronic unit is located nearby. Since the 80s, electronic speed sensors and control units have been increasingly used in the operation of speedometers, that is, instead of cables and gearboxes, wires, connectors, and boards appear. The accuracy of the odometer readings has never been at the level of space technology. Errors may be structural and operational, for example, due to tire wear, reduced pressure, or simply installing wheels of a non-standard size. The diameter of the wheel is smaller - they make more revolutions per segment of the journey, the mileage “increases beyond the plan” and vice versa. For some, instrumental mileage readings “do not agree” with transportation reports and other commercial activities. Odometer reliability is also a concept with “tolerances” - like any man-made mechanism, it can act up and fail. There are many reasons to “get into” the odometer, objective and not so objective. And since the car has become a common subject of market relations, there have been even more subjective reasons for artificially changing mileage.

In mechanical systems, the so-called “mileage adjustment” required simple equipment and the skills of a mechanic. The drive cable could be connected to an electric motor and wound wherever and as much as required. Or open the “tidy” and directly rearrange the drums in the desired numerical combination. Everything became more complicated with the transformation of the odometer into a purely electronic device, when it became part of the computerized control system of the car. Roughly speaking, you can no longer approach such an odometer with just a screwdriver, since processing data from sensors and recording information is now carried out in microcircuits. However, there is no talk about the invulnerability of testimony.

This only means a change in the methodology for working with odometers: instead of a primitive tool, appropriate electronic equipment and software are used, and mileage adjustment services have moved to a different professional level and have become more expensive.

Modern technical means allow this to be done on almost any car. True, adjusting the mileage of a 2002 Toyota Corolla and, say, a new BMW or Range Rover is not the same thing. Most Japanese, Korean, inexpensive European cars produced in the 2000s, as well as domestic and Chinese models, allow you to get by with “little blood.” As a rule, in these cases, it is enough to “open” and reprogram the unit in the instrument panel itself, in some cases with the need to unsolder the required microcircuit. Of course, this also requires an extremely careful and qualified approach, but in general, the time and resources spent are insignificant, and the result is quite reliable. However, such “freebies” are gradually disappearing.

The fact is that in new European models, mileage is written not only into the instrument’s own chip, but also into a bunch of different modules: engine control unit, gearbox, ABS modules, SRS Airbag (airbag), steering column, etc. navigation controls, radio, power windows and so on. It is already more difficult to “erase” all information.


As long as a car odometer has existed, people have probably been tampering with its readings for as long. When mechanical counting units ruled the roost, calculating mileage did not cause any particular difficulties, but with the advent of electronic odometers, the phenomenon did not disappear, but only the adjustment methods changed. A variety of equipment and software are now offered that can be used to “get into the brains” of the odometer of almost any car. The average annual mileage for passenger cars in Russia is about 18,000–20,000 km. The numbers are not pulled out of thin air - this is what the employees of the service station say, where they keep records of cars of regular customers and have accumulated long-term statistics. There are many cars with mileage of 30,000–35,000 or 10,000–15,000, there are other indicators, but still the majority have about 20,000 Russian kilometers. Initially I didn’t think that I would have to resort to this, but this is how it turns out. I remember that I was one of the first to exhibit a Japanese crossover from 1999, with an honest and natural mileage of 330,000 km. People come up, they would like to take a look, but they are scared by the numbers on the odometer. There was also a mechanical counter there, and these were “made” right on the market and quickly. Then I didn’t tighten it too much, up to 230,000, so that it still looked believable, I moved the car to another place, and the very next day it went away.

I came across a 10-year-old Nissan Teana sedan, good condition, but actual mileage over 500,000 km. With such mileage, in principle, no one will buy a car at this age for adequate money; it will probably freeze or must be sold at a loss. Much also depends on the mentality of buyers. Our people, if they are looking at a car made even in 1995, 1996 or 1997, then for some reason they expect a mileage of no more than 170,000–200,000 km. But there are only a few cars of this age with such mileage, there are some exceptions. I also had quite rare cars, for example, a Skoda Roomster, six years old, one owner, perfect condition, actual mileage 120,000, and all potential clients shout out loud - a lot! Like, it’s still fresh, but soon you’ll need to invest in it, a timing belt replacement is on the way, and so on. I made 90,000, but didn’t sell it right away. As a result, the situation is this: if the cars are worn out, there is no point in messing with the mileage, but if they are fresh, I try to get them somewhere up to a psychologically acceptable 100,000. If the odometer shows about 70,000, then I change it to approximately 40,000. In general, they want a low mileage - so we turn it around.

When newer cars and electronic odometers arrived, I started turning to service technicians. It happens that you drag two or three shields there at once, in bulk, they already have their own permanent masters. It’s more difficult with “Europeans”. Somehow it turned out to be a BMW, they removed the mileage from the dashboard, but when I installed it and started it, it showed the same mileage again, so I had to leave the car for a couple of days and clean it.

In all this time, only three times have buyers offered to check the actual mileage. There was an interesting case with a dealer 5-year-old Honda Accord.   1. The device does not work. The problem is unscrewing the nuts that connect the flexible pulley to the device and transmission, if this is the case, then they just need to be tightened.
