What size alloy wheels and tires can be installed on VAZ cars?
The most popular size of alloy wheels on VAZ cars are wheels with a diameter of 14 inches (R14). However, when installing wheels with a diameter different from the factory ones, you must comply with the width and offset set by the car manufacturer. Normal and fairly wide alloy wheels on the VAZ 2108, 2109, 21093, 21099 can be, for example, 6 inches wide (J6.0) with an offset (indicated by ET) of 35-40 mm . For such wheels, standard VAZ 2110 tires (size 175/65 R14) are suitable, but tires with a width of 165 or 185 millimeters are also acceptable.

In addition, the “eights” and “nines” can be equipped with 15-inch alloy wheels with low-profile tires. But then the offset should be within 30-35 mm, and the tires, for example, should be 185/55 R15 or 195/50 R15. Installation of tires of size 195/55 R15 or 205/50 R15 is possible only on the front axle, because rear wheels with this diameter will require additional modifications to the suspension and wheel arches.

Large radius alloy wheels for VAZ 2109

Mounting values on the disk (bolt pattern parameters)
When installing, it is important to take into account the fitting size recommended by the manufacturer, since differences may be due to different calculation systems (metric or imperial).
- The diameter distance between mounting holes is designated PCD (Pitch Circle Diameter). The accepted scheme on the VAZ-2109 looks like 4x98 or PCD 98/4, i.e. between the central axes of the bolts (4 pieces) 98 mm.
- Fastening elements - metric thread M12x1.25 (bolt stud diameter 12 mm and thread pitch 1.25 mm).
- The central hole for the hub shaft on the disk is designated DIA and for the VAZ-2109 this is equal to 58.5 mm.
Important! Often, car enthusiasts confuse PCD values due to a difference of just a couple of mm. For example, the standard size for the two central holes is just a visually imperceptible deviation of 2 mm - this is PCD at 4/98 and 100. Only 1 bolt will turn out to be completely tightened, and the remaining 3 will be undertightened, which will ultimately lead to an emergency.
Characteristics and parameters of wheels for a domestic car
Due to the fact that the VAZ 2109 has a common base with the models of the Fiat concern, this parameter is 4x98. However, the overhang dimensions and hub diameter should also be taken into account. If all the listed parameters match, then we can safely say that the disk is suitable.
There is a wide range of products on the market with a drilling parameter of 4x100. These products are inexpensive and high quality, and many car owners are tempted to install them. - PCD (bolt pattern) - 4x98 (4 is the number of holes, 98 is the diameter of the circle on which they are located in mm);
- fasteners - M12 by 1.25 (12 - stud diameter in mm, 1.25 - thread size);

- tire pressure - 1.9-2 bar.
- 4.5, 5 and 6J represents the width of the wheel rim. In this case, it is equal to sizes from 4.5 to 6 inches;

- The drilling or bolting parameter is designated as 4x98, or PCD. In this case, the product is secured with four bolts, which are located around a circle with a diameter of 98 millimeters;
- The diameter of the central hole is the size for the hub, measured in millimeters.
Markings and parameters
The markings indicated on the rims are of three types:
- European;
- Russian;
- American.
The difference between them is not significant, plus the information is always indicated the same, only sometimes with different ways of notation.
When choosing wheels for the VAZ 2109, you need to adhere to the choice of products with the following parameters.

Tolyatti auto design engineers installed wheel rims with a radius of R15, but there are no direct reasons not to do this.
The problem is the difficulty of performing this operation without the involvement of specialists; the intervention of qualified craftsmen is necessary. The reason for this is the “conflict” of the rear arches and suspension parts with the new rims, and in some cases it is necessary to violate the factory design of the transmission.

Is it possible to install R14 or R15 wheels on a VAZ 2109
So, you can install R14 wheels on VAZ 2109, 2108, 21099, 2114, 2115. The disk parameters should be 5, 5.5 or 6 inches wide and have an offset of 35-40 mm. You can also install cast or forged wheels with the same parameters. Other parameters of the disks: holes 4x98 mm, central hole diameter at least 58.5 mm.
In this case, it will be necessary to select tires of the appropriate size so that the overall diameter of the wheel remains approximately the same. Otherwise, when turning the wheel, the tire will touch the wheel arch liners or suspension elements, which, of course, is not what we want.
What wheels were installed on different bodies and configurations?
The VAZ-2109 car is a 5-door version of the VAZ-2108. Over the entire period of production, from 1987 to 2004, the car underwent 7 modifications, including options for export. Their disk parameters also changed, although the bolt pattern always remained the same. These differences were expressed in the choice of rim width, in the size of the offset and in three options for the diameter of the circle.
But in the factory, only wheels with a diameter of 13 inches were usually installed. Wheels R14 and R15 were considered only acceptable for installation. Here are the two main brands of rims that cars were equipped with on the factory assembly line:
- 5Jx13 ET35;
- 5Jx13 ET40.
The first numbers of the marking indicate the width of the rim, 13 is the overall diameter, ET35-40 is the offset in mm. The standard factory disk design was a stamped steel product. Losing to its cast light-alloy competitors in a number of indicators, steel stamping has always been and remains durable, inexpensive and reliable.
How to make the necessary calculations
Acceptable tire sizes for 14-inch wheels: 175/65 R14 and 185/60 R14. Moreover, the second option is preferable.
However, the diameter of the wheel can be calculated very simply if you know how the characteristics of the rubber are deciphered. Let's do this for the VAZ 2109.
Let's take a standard 175/70 R13 wheel. 175 – tire width in millimeters; 70 – height of the rubber profile as a percentage of the width, that is, in our case 175 x 0.70 = 122.5 mm
Disc diameter 13 inches = 13 x 25.4 = 330 mm.
The total wheel diameter is the sum of the rim diameter and two profile heights. Total 330 + 122.5 x 2 = 575 mm.
Having made calculations in a similar way, we get the following figures for comparison:
- 175/70 R13 – 575 mm;
- 175/65 R14 – 583 mm;
- 185/60 R14 – 577 mm.
We see that the last option is the most suitable. It is also 10 mm wider, which will provide us with a shorter braking distance due to the increased contact patch with the road, better handling, and resistance to tire bending in corners at high speeds due to the reduced profile height. But at the same time, a wide tire is more prone to hydroplaning at high speeds than a tire with the same parameters, but narrower. Also, impacts from driving through road potholes will be more strongly transmitted to the body of a car with wheels of low profile height.

Wheels with a larger radius, for example with a diameter of 15 inches, are also suitable for the Samara, but they are not recommended by the factory, so there may be problems with passing the technical inspection. For such wheels, you should choose tires with a dimension of 185/55 R15. With a stretch, 195/50 R15 will also work, but it’s better to play it safe and try it on if your friends have similar ones. In this case, the wheel may “rub” due to the tire being too wide.

Is it possible to install 4x100 disks?
This option can be seen quite often on the VAZ-2109. However, in reality this solution is not correct.
The problem is that the standard bolt pattern of the model in question differs relatively little from the factory one. It seems to many that these couple of millimeters do not matter. However, it is impossible to secure a 4×100 disk properly with ordinary bolts. There is a thickening on them (under the head) - it is this that does not allow the fasteners to be screwed in completely. Moreover, if you try to do this by force, most likely you will break the thread in the hub.
Therefore, they have to be secured with special eccentric bolts, and they have disadvantages that do not have the best effect on reliability. You should not forget about them if your own safety and that of your passengers is important to you.
