Spark plugs Bosch, Brisk, Denso, NG, DVRM for Lada Priora - which ones to choose and how to replace

According to the official technical regulations of AvtoVAZ, spark plugs on Lada Priora cars (VAZ 2170, 2171, 2172) are replaced every 30 thousand km. It is for this mileage that the life of the spark plugs is designed.

However, some drivers neglect the factory recommendations and change spark plugs less often, as a result of which engine wear increases. In the article we will look at this issue in more detail, we will tell you which spark plugs to choose and how to change them.

Symptoms of a problem

One of the most common signs of faulty spark plugs is the failure of one of the cylinders, that is, the engine begins to stall and run unstably. Vibrations and dips appear, the car’s dynamics disappear, its starting deteriorates, fuel consumption increases and the “CheckEngine” lamp lights up.

All these signs are associated with spark plugs; if such symptoms appear on your car, it is immediately recommended to replace the spark plugs.

Basic faults

The time has come to explain why it is worth carrying a certain supply of candles with you for the Priora. Don’t even store them in the garage or at home, but put them under the trunk lid so you don’t have to worry about anything when a critical situation occurs. When the “spark” doesn’t go after a hard day at work, you definitely won’t be eager to walk to the nearest auto parts store.

You can determine the malfunction of the Priora spark plugs by the following signs:

  • Starting the engine is difficult (that is, the starter rotates, the fuel-air mixture is supplied inside the chamber, but there is still no spark; the engine will start if you turn the starter for a long time).
  • Fuel consumption has increased (there may be several reasons for this phenomenon, but if at least one more reason from the list appears, it is worth inspecting the ignition unit).
  • The proportion of carbon monoxide coming out of the exhaust system has increased.
  • The engine power has decreased (this is especially noticeable during acceleration - there is no usual “traction” and good acceleration).
  • The engine is misfiring, which means one of the cylinders is not working - simply because “its” spark plug did not give a spark, the mixture did not ignite.
  • Usually the spark plug is changed every 15,000 km (for many this is one year of driving with their favorite car), but they can be “flooded”. This is a more serious problem that will take a little longer to deal with.

Consequences

Driving a Priora with faulty spark plugs is fraught with failure of other internal combustion engine components. Operating the vehicle with a non-functioning spark plug can lead to failure of the catalyst or oxygen sensor. The cost of these parts is quite high compared to a set of spark plugs.

What does carbon deposits on spark plugs indicate?

The first picture shows a working candle with a little soot. A slight deposit on the insulator and electrodes, the reason for this may be poorly functioning PVN (armored wires), a rich mixture or an ignition delay

The second picture shows a candle with a brownish-yellow soot; sometimes there are candles with a glossy insulator, as if polished. The reason for this may be the use of fuel with a high octane number that is not suitable for the car.

If overheated, the spark plug will have a white insulator with small black deposits and premature electrode erosion. The reason for this may be ignition advance, or a spark plug that is not fully wrapped.

If the spark plug electrode is melted or partially deformed, this indicates premature ignition. This leads to a loss of engine power, as well as rapid wear.

Replacement

The process of replacing spark plugs is a very simple task that does not require special training; you just need to prepare the necessary tool.

Tool

  • A driver or ratchet with an extension (you can use a special wrench for spark plugs);
  • Long head “16 mm” or “21 mm” (depending on the number of valves 16kl-16mm, 8kl-21mm);
  • TORX E8 head or 10mm socket (depending on the year of manufacture of the car, new models use TORX sprockets);

Process

  • We remove the decorative trim of the engine with the inscription “16 valve”, it is attached to rubber clamps; to dismantle it, you need to pull it up from each corner.

  • Using an E8 or “10mm” head, unscrew the IKZ and remove them.

  • Using a ratchet with an extension and a 16mm socket, unscrew the spark plugs; to remove the spark plug from the cylinder head well, you can use a coil.

  • We install new spark plugs; it is advisable to tighten the spark plugs without a wrench. This is necessary in order to feel the effort; if the spark plug is skewed, you will not ruin the thread in the head.

  • New spark plugs must be tightened 180° after they stop.
  • We assemble everything in the reverse order and start the engine.

Replacing spark plugs on an 8-valve engine is simpler and easier; you just need to remove the high-voltage wires and unscrew the spark plugs with a 21mm socket.

List of tools

Unscrewing the fasteners on the coils
In order to change the spark plugs on a Lada “Priora” vehicle, you need to prepare the following tools:

  • depending on the coil fasteners - star-shaped head or 10;
  • special wrench for spark plugs (16mm head with extension). It is necessary to have an elastic band and a magnet in the inner part for comfortable removal of the part from the groove;
  • flat head screwdrivers.

How to change spark plugs on a Lada Priora

Spark plugs occupy a central place in the functioning of the engine. They are responsible for high-quality combustion of fuel. Replacement of spark plugs on a Priora 16 valve must be carried out at an interval of 30 thousand kilometers. If the part is coated with iridium or platinum, installation can be carried out after 60 thousand km. You can perform the steps to change the unit at a service station, as well as independently. The procedure is simple, even novice drivers with little experience can handle it.

It is necessary to replace the spark plugs on the Priora earlier than the specified period if the following symptoms appear:

  1. The engine does not start well.
  2. Fuel overconsumption is observed.
  3. Loss of dynamism.
  4. The motor is tripping.

This list is not complete, since it is possible to analyze the condition of the part only after its dismantling. Below we will describe in detail how to replace spark plugs on a Lada 16 cl, and also tell you about acceptable options for replacement.

What spark plugs does AvtoVAZ recommend for the Lada Priora?

The manufacturer recommends installing spark plugs Brisk “SUPER” DR15YC-1, Brisk DR17YC-1, Bosch FR7DCU, as well as AU17DVRM or AU15DVRM. These spark plugs are the most popular and are recommended by the factory. Their resource is designed for 30 thousand km, after which it is better to replace the spark plugs.

Spark plugs recommended by AvtoVAZ for 8 cl engines

  • JSC ZAZS, Russia A17DVRM
  • BERU, Germany 14R-7DU
  • CHAMPION, England RN9YC
  • NGK, Japan BPR6ES
  • DENSO Denso, Japan W20EPR
  • BRISK, Czech Republic LR15YC
  • BOSCH Bosch, Germany WR7DC

Recommended spark plugs for 16 cl engines

  • JSC ZAZS, Russia AU17DVRM
  • BERU, Germany 14FR-7DU
  • CHAMPION, England RC9YC
  • NGK, Japan BCPR6ES
  • DENSO, Japan Q20PR-U11
  • BRISK, Czech Republic DR15YC
  • BOSCH, Germany FR7DCU

The advantage of iridium or platinum spark plugs is their service life, which is longer than conventional spark plugs. If conventional spark plugs require replacement after 30 thousand km, iridium spark plugs can last up to 60-70 thousand km.

After purchasing spark plugs, we recommend checking them. You can do this yourself, if you or someone you know has the device, or in a car service center at a special stand.

Mechanism of action

Replacing spark plugs on a 16-valve Priora is carried out on a cold, not warmed-up engine, according to the following step-by-step instructions:

  1. The plastic motor protection is removed. To do this, you will need to unscrew the filler cap where the engine oil is poured. Additionally, on the left side (in the top corner), you need to remove the plastic latch. After removing the protective housing, we recommend returning the oil filler cap to its place. This will prevent external elements such as dust, dirt and foreign particles from getting inside the container.
  2. Be sure to disconnect the terminals from the ignition units.
  3. Screws intended for coil fixation are unscrewed. Depending on the types of fasteners used in the Priora 16 valves, you may need a star-shaped wrench or a head with a number ten.
  4. To remove the coil, you need to pry it using a flat-tip screwdriver;

Unscrewing the spark plug on a Priora

  1. The candles are unscrewed. To do this, use a spark plug wrench with an extension. After performing these actions, you should visually evaluate the functionality of the part. By appearance, the car owner is able to determine how correctly the engine is working.

At the next stage, the spark plugs on the Prior 16 are replaced or the base part is returned, provided that it is fully functioning. Next, it is important to return the coil to its place, screw in the fixing screw and place the terminal.

In the process of twisting the candle, do not apply much effort; the part is placed with ease. If over-tightened, the thread may be damaged, and this will lead to a complete and expensive repair of the cylinder head (cylinder head).

Similar actions are carried out with the remaining ignition elements. After the procedure is completed, the plastic cover on the motor is returned to its place.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE IN CANDLES FOR 8 AND 16 VALVE PRIORS?

As mentioned above, Priors with 8 and 16 valve engines require different spark plugs. According to the recommendations of Auto-VAZ, spark plugs for 16 valve Priora must comply with the A17DVRM standard, and for 16v engines - AU17DVRM.

In fact, the differences between them lie solely in the design features - devices labeled A17 are designed for a standard hexagon, AU17 - for a smaller one.

You can see the features of marking of domestically produced products in the image.

Features of marking spark plugs of domestic production

How to choose the right new spare parts for a car?

Many drivers and owners of Lada “Priora” know that a 16 cl engine differs from an 8 valve one. A distinctive feature lies in the parameters, namely the diameter of the threaded zone. On an engine with sixteen valves, the diameter is smaller. Despite this factor, replacing spark plugs on a Prior 16 valve or other modification is no different.

Suitable spark plugs for such an engine from a national manufacturer are marked:

  • A17DVRM for warm months;
  • A15DVRM for the winter period.

The reduced heat number on the marking helps to quickly start the engine at negative air temperatures. If desired, it is possible to purchase imported analogues, for example:

  • GNR, Bosch (WR7DC) or Beru (14R-7DU);
  • UK, Champion (RN9YC);
  • Czech Republic, Brisk (LR15YC).

Manufacturer's recommendations

It is unlikely that anyone will doubt which spark plugs the manufacturer will recommend for a Russian car? Naturally, domestic production. And this is natural - not always European, let’s say, refined quality can work effectively with our equipment. And so, spark plugs for Priora 16 valves must be marked - AU17DVRM. For an 8-valve engine – A17DVRM. A15DVRM are best suited for winter driving, as they are characterized by a low heat rating and, accordingly, will be easier to ignite in cold conditions.

Spark plug markings

However, many motorists choose foreign-made spark plugs for their Priora cars. Thus, the German companies BOSCH (WR7DC, FR7DCU), BERU (14R-7DU, 14FR-7DU) are very popular. The English company CHAMPION (RN9YC, RC9YC) is not far behind them. Automotive stores also have Czech ones, for example BRISK (LR15YC, DR15YC). These are high-quality, reliable spare parts, which, however, are no better or worse than domestic ones. Just a little more expensive.

What happens if you make the wrong choice?

If you install unsuitable or low-quality spark plugs in your car, the following troubles may arise:

  • deterioration of engine ignition. When starting the engine, the owner will have to crank the starter for a long time, and this can reduce the functionality of the battery. In some situations it will be impossible to start the vehicle;
  • excess fuel consumption;
  • Once started, the engine will be much noisier and the sounds will subsequently increase in volume. This is especially noticeable during the process of warming up the car;
  • the production of harmful substances in exhaust gases will increase. The analysis can be carried out using special equipment;
  • the power and dynamics of the motor will decrease. This will be noticeably felt as you climb the hill.

In order to avoid such problems with your car, we recommend buying only high-quality spark plugs from trusted manufacturers.

In this article, we discussed how to change spark plugs and the principles of choosing the right part for the full functioning of the power unit. It is necessary to pay due attention to the choice of spark plugs, since they play a major role in the operating system of vehicles.

Instructions for replacing spark plugs on a 16 cl engine

So, if we are replacing spark plugs on a 21126 engine, then before removing the plastic decorative cover, it is necessary to remove the absorber purge valve from it. The photo shows that the valve simply lifts up and moves out of the way.

Remove the absorber purge valve

Next, remove the plastic decorative cover and see in front of you 4 ignition coils, which are mounted on spark plugs. To get to the spark plugs you will need to unscrew all the coils.

Removing the decorative cover

We disconnect the plugs from the coils, and using the E8 sprocket, unscrew each of them. We take them out of the block and you can start replacing the spark plugs. For a 16 cl engine, the spark plugs come with a “16” thread, so we take a 16 wrench and carefully unscrew each spark plug. If the replacement is made for the first time, the spark plugs may “go tight”.

Disconnect the pads from the ignition coils. Unscrew the coils. Take out the coils.

We take out the spark plugs and install new ones. They should be tightened first by hand, so as not to damage the thread, and only then with a wrench.

We take out the old ones and install new spark plugs

The tightening torque for the spark plugs on the Priora is 25–30 Nm. There is no need to pull the thread too hard

After replacing and tightening all the spark plugs, install the ignition coils and reassemble in the reverse order. Look at the old candles, we have already written above about their soot and what it can mean.

How to replace spark plugs in VAZ 2170, 2171, 2172 Lada Priora with your own hands

If you have everything, then you can proceed:

1. First, remove the decorative plastic casing.

2. Next, disconnect the ignition coil terminal.

3. Unscrew the coil mounting bolt.

4. Using a flathead screwdriver, remove the ignition coil.

5. The spark plug is located in a recess, in the so-called spark plug well, so to unscrew it you will need an extension cord.

6. Be careful, if you notice traces of oil in the spark plug well, be sure to find out its origin; the engine may need immediate replacement of the cylinder head gasket.

7. If this is your first time replacing spark plugs, then unscrewing the spark plugs will require force; in some cases it is simply impossible to do this with a simple spark plug wrench. To do this, you will have to buy a special spark plug socket with a knob.

8. So, unscrew the spark plug, be careful not to accidentally break the spark plug insulator, since it will be quite difficult to remove the fragments, and if, God forbid, they get into the cylinder, then you will need to completely disassemble the cylinder head.

9. Remove the spark plug from the well; if this does not work, use the removed ignition coil, put it on the spark plug shank and try again.

10. The candle has been removed, now you can look at its condition.

11. Draw a conclusion based on the table above. If the spark plug insulator is clean and does not fall into any of the categories, everything is fine with your engine.

12. Install the new spark plug into the head, then reinstall.

13. Attention! Tighten the spark plug without using a wrench; the spark plug should twist easily without any effort. If you break the threads in the cylinder head, you will need repairs, which are not cheap, plus you will create a lot of trouble for yourself.

14. Do everything carefully and take your time. When the candle is screwed in, use the wrench and tighten the spark plugs. Again, remember that everything should be in moderation; if you overdo it, you can break the thread.

15. Now all that remains is to put the ignition coil in place, tighten the mounting bolt and put the connector in place.

Repeat the procedure for all other spark plugs.

That's all, now you know that replacing spark plugs on a Lada Priora is a procedure that you can do yourself!

From this article you will learn which spark plugs to put on a Priora, how spark plugs differ for 8 and 16 valve engines, and how to replace them.

Replacing spark plugs on a Priora (Figure 16 of an internal combustion engine valve)

REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE

Any murzilka (operation book) for VAZ cars states that spark plugs must be replaced every 30 thousand km. mileage However, in practice, even the highest quality products rarely travel 30,000 km.

The first sign that a replacement needs to be made is a change in the normal functioning of the engine. You will notice changes in its idle speed, and there will also be problems with ignition.

Unscrew them and visually inspect the electrodes. In normal condition, the electrodes are light gray in color, with a minimal amount of brown deposits allowed. During operation, the electrodes become covered with a yellow or brown coating (this is a normal condition for the middle of their service life). When the ignition elements of the fuel mixture become obsolete, black metal deposits appear on the insulator, and the electrode burns out or melts.

It is also necessary to pay attention to the spark plug gap between the insulator and the electrode (ideally for Priora it should be 1.1 mm, which is indicated in the service book). The gap increases during operation, so if a check shows that the gap is 2-3 millimeters larger than it was originally, the spark plug needs to be replaced.

The gap can be adjusted by simply bending or pressing the electrode against the insulator, but this can only be done normally on new spark plugs; when worn, the electrode, as a rule, becomes very fragile and crumbles under rough influence.

In the image below you can see the stages of spark plug wear.

Stages of spark plug wear

If the electrode is intact, you can try to revive the product; to do this, you need to anneal the deposit on the electrode with a gas burner and, after it has softened, remove it with a metal brush. This must be done carefully so as not to damage the fragile structure.

Now let’s figure out how to replace spark plugs on a 16 valve Priora. To do this you will need a spark plug wrench, a screwdriver and a 10mm socket wrench to unscrew the coils.

Everything is done according to the following algorithm:

  1. Open the hood and remove the plastic protective cover from the engine;
  2. We remove the power wire from the ignition coils and unscrew the bolts that secure them;
  3. We pry up the coils with a flat screwdriver and take them out;
  4. We take a special key and unscrew the spark plugs. This may not be so easy to do, since high temperatures may cause the shrink thread to stick to the body of the part. Unscrew it carefully so as not to damage the structure, since removing fragments of insulator from the well is an extremely problematic task. If you have a compressor at hand, blow out the shrinkage well to remove dust and contaminants accumulated in it;
  5. We check the condition. If it is damaged or extremely worn, we install a new one. We insert the spark plug into the magnetic head of the key and screw it back in. There is no need to make any effort here - the thread should go smoothly, and after the body is held tightly in the seat, you need to tighten the thread with light force;
  6. All that remains is to install the coils in place and connect power to them.

Replacing spark plugs on an 8-valve Priora differs from the procedure described above due to their location. In 16-valve engines they are recessed into a well inside the cylinder block, while on 8-valve engines the spark plugs are placed on the surface of the block, so changing them is much easier.

Replacement is carried out as follows:

  1. Remove the power wire from the shank;
  2. Unscrew using a 21 mm socket wrench;
  3. Screw in new ones and connect power.

Now you know which spark plugs are best for Priora and how to replace them. Have a good ride without any breakdowns!

What are the dangers of choosing the wrong candles?

The spark plugs for Priora must be of high quality, otherwise the driver risks encountering the following malfunctions:

  1. When trying to start the engine, the starter will spin for a long time. In this case, the engine may not start or may start after some time. If you try to start the engine for a long time, there is a chance that the battery will die.
  2. When the power unit is operating, new noises will appear, we are talking about idling or warming up the internal combustion engine. Over time, noise uncharacteristic of engine operation may become louder.
  3. Fuel consumption will increase.
  4. The volume of harmful substances contained in exhaust gases will increase.
  5. Engine power will decrease, especially when driving uphill.

Which candles to choose?

To prevent such a development of events, you need to know which spark plugs are best installed on a Priora sixteen-valve engine. So, especially for car enthusiasts who need to purchase spark plugs for the Priora, the manufacturer has given recommendations regarding the selection of SZ specified in the service manual.

If there is no operating manual for the machine, a list of manufacturers whose products are recommended for domestic engines is given below:

  • on the Priora there are 16 valves, the manufacturer allows the use of Russian SZ, model AU17 (AU15) DVRM;
  • BERU brand products from a German manufacturer - 14FR7DU;
  • NW British-made Champion - RC9YC;
  • SZ made in Japan NGK - BCPR6ES;
  • Danso Q20PR-U11;
  • Czech products BRISK DR15YC-1/DR17YC-1;
  • German SZ Bosch FR7DCU.

Today, prior manufacturers use SZ, the electrode in which is made of iridium, for example, Denso or NGK. Car owners claim that the use of iridium on the electrode allows them to start the engine in winter. Denso SZ have a longer service life compared to SZ with a metal electrode. Whether to choose Denso or not is everyone’s business, but before choosing, it is advisable to read reviews from motorists. Detailed information about the product of this manufacturer is presented in the article.

If you believe the reviews, Russian-made spark plugs are not the best option for the sixteen-valve Priora. Many motorists claim that they can be used in the summer, since in winter they do not provide the spark necessary to ignite the combustible mixture.

If you choose SZ Denso or NGK, or spark plugs from another manufacturer, be careful when purchasing. When purchasing a product, inspect its packaging - the country of origin of the product must be indicated. On candles where the brand name is indicated, the name must be written or engraved perfectly, without irregularities or chips. The thread must be perfectly straight (the author of the video about replacing the SZ is Dmitry Gruzdev).

Spark plugs for Priora: choices

The manufacturer of Priora recommends installing domestically produced spark plugs, but they can easily be replaced with foreign analogues. Let's consider the classification:

  • All spark plugs are divided into two-electrode and multi-electrode. Two-electrode ones have a side and a central electrode, while multi-electrode ones have one central and several side electrodes, respectively (usually 3). It is believed that multi-electrode ones have a greater lifespan and durability.
  • Spark plugs differ in Priora and by type of material. So, the standard, classic option is copper electrodes. There are also rarer materials: iridium, platinum. Thus, iridium spark plugs on Priora are characterized by a smaller diameter of the central electrode, which ranges from 0.7 to 0.4 mm, while in standard nickel spark plugs this parameter is 2.5 mm. And a completely new product is pre-chamber spark plugs, in which the body itself is given the role of electrodes.
  • Also, spark plugs are divided by thread diameter and size for the wrench head. Thus, spark plugs for a 16-valve Priora have a smaller thread diameter and wrench head size than spark plugs for a Priora 8-valve model.
  • There are also four types according to such a parameter as heat value. The heat number is the average pressure at which it is easier to heat candles during testing. So, they are distinguished by types: cold type (heat number above 20), medium type (17-20), universal type (11-20), hot (11-14).

It is not always easy to figure out such complex technical parameters on your own, because a beginner does not understand many things, for example, what is the spark plug gap on a Priora. Therefore, when deciding which spark plugs to install on a 16-valve or 8-valve Priora, it is best to turn to specialists or follow the recommendations of the car manufacturer.

Reasons for incorrect spark plug operation

  • One of the main reasons for their premature failure is low quality fuel. Gasoline may contain various impurities and may not meet standards.
  • A malfunction of the valve system can also lead to malfunctions in the spark plug. As a rule, malfunctions of the valve system lead not only to burnout, but also to valves and pistons. So they may well become good “diagnosticians” for many automobile diseases.
  • The wrong choice of spark plugs is another reason why they become covered with soot. So, if the heat rating is higher than recommended for a given engine, the tone may well fail.
  • Sometimes oil gets into the combustion chamber, and then a black, oily coating forms on the spark plug, which makes it difficult to work.
  • Black soot can not form from such reasons as contamination of the air filter, wear of the cylinder-piston group, or a crack in the insulator.
  • Melting or burnout of the electrodes occurs if the cooling system is faulty.
  • Even trying to start the engine in cold weather can cause the spark plug to fail. In this case, they may be flooded with a flammable mixture.

How long does it take to change spark plugs?

  • If the car is new, it is recommended to change the spark plugs during regular maintenance at the dealer, after 10 thousand km, this will ensure proper engine running-in and smooth operation.
  • If the car has significant mileage, but you care about how much the engine consumes per 100 km, how it works and how your car accelerates, then it is better to change the spark plugs after 20-30 thousand km. mileage, provided that the candles themselves are able to cover this mileage. If the spark plugs are of high quality, then most likely they will be able to run for 30 thousand.
  • If the car is used regularly, the operating conditions are not the best, and the fuel is either bad or very bad, it is better to change the spark plugs more often, for example, every 10-15 thousand km. Moreover, taking into account all the above arguments, it is also recommended to replace the fuel filter more often.

Many people who “understand” the issue of spark plugs, and cars in general, are now probably nervously grimacing and complaining, saying, why change them if the engine already works like a clock? There are some, right? So, indeed, some spark plugs and motors are truly capable of demonstrating iron endurance, but only SOME . Are you sure that your engine or spark plugs are exactly like this? Is not a fact! The fact is that it is not so easy to notice even a slightly increased “eating” of fuel, and if the BC does not yet show consumption, then it is completely impossible. Perhaps for some this “insignificant” does not play any role, but if you add up +1-3 liters for every hundred mileage. If this doesn’t scare you, then calculate how much you will overpay per 1,000 or 10,000 km. As for me, taking into account fuel prices, the figure will be an impressive one, so, whatever one may say, it will be cheaper to replace the spark plugs ahead of schedule. This way, you will save money and enjoy the engine, which in turn will not fail at the most inopportune moment.

If you don't know when to change spark plugs , you can check them and visually inspect them, after which it will be easier to make a decision - to change or not to change. Using the table below, draw a conclusion about the condition of your car’s spark plugs. To enlarge, click on the picture.

Do-it-yourself replacement of spark plugs for Lada Priora 16 valve

Replacing spark plugs is an important procedure that is performed every 30 thousand km or in case of their malfunction. The reason why spark plugs are replaced unscheduled may be unstable engine operation, excessive fuel consumption or poor engine starting. In addition, poor throttle response or when the engine stalls can be evidence of faulty spark plugs. You can even determine the condition of the spark plugs by external signs; below I will give a table by which you can decide whether you need to replace the spark plugs or not.

Today I will talk about how to replace spark plugs on a VAZ 2170, 2171, 2172 (Lada Priora 16 valve)

Before you start replacing, take care of new spark plugs, choose one you like from the options in the auto store.

Replacing spark plugs on a Lada Priora is impossible without a special socket wrench “16” with an extension. There must be a magnet in the spark plug wrench or head so that the spark plugs can be held suspended.

How to change spark plugs on a Priora

Modern cars move with the help of an internal combustion engine. The fuel mixture burns in the working chambers of the cylinders. And it burns with explosive flashes. What sets this mixture on fire? Special device. That's what it's called - a spark plug. What it is? What kind of spark plugs are installed on the Priora? How to determine the faulty one? How to replace it? You need to know the answers to these questions.

Design and purpose of a spark plug

The ceramic spark plug insulator prevents the impulse from the ignition coil (spark generator) from going to ground. Inside the spark plug there is a metal electrode and a graphite core. On the so-called skirt with a thread for screwing it into a regular place, there is a curved protrusion, an electrode. This, one might say, is the “minus” element of the device. A high voltage current is supplied from the ignition coil to the Priora spark plug.

Passing through the internal rod, it slightly replaces its properties in the graphite rod in such a way that, reaching the gap between the “plus” and “minus” electrodes, it forms a stable high-temperature flash, a spark. It is this that ignites the mixture of air and gasoline in the working chamber of the cylinder.

This mixture is compressed by compression to a certain density at which a spark can ignite it.

Attention! These devices are available for 8- and 16-valve Priora engines. Accordingly, for the first, the candles are made on a turnkey basis at 21, and for the second, at 16.

Many car enthusiasts replace spark plugs without paying attention to the various markings on these devices. Then a surprise arises, how can it be that new parts have just been replaced and are already out of order. But the data is put on the candles for a reason. They are produced for three types of ignition.

  1. Contact.
  2. Electronic.
  3. For systems with ECM (Electronic Engine Control System).

Important! Although in appearance they seem to have no differences, however, it is impossible to replace one type with another.

The fact is that candles for different purposes receive different currents accordingly. They can also be categorized. The contact system has a voltage of approximately 12-14 kV (thousands of volts). For cars equipped with an electronic ignition system with a mechanical drive, 18-21 kV. And accordingly, “injection” cars, in particular the Priora, have 20-25 thousand volts.

What else to look for when buying candles

Perhaps this advice will be unnecessary for many, but there have been cases when motorists got into trouble. So, when purchasing, you need to pay attention to the date of manufacture. According to the manufacturer's claims, it is only three years, even if it did not work. Preserved candles, that is, with a special preservative lubricant applied - 5 years. If you do not pay attention to the date of manufacture, then it is quite possible to purchase a low-quality, stale product. And then you shouldn’t be surprised that the same “same” spark plugs for Priora will last a minimum period.

The first thing to remember is that it is advisable to change the spark plugs as a whole set. But do not throw away the functional ones from the old kit. As a result of several replacements, you can collect a working set of used spark plugs, which you can carry with you in case of sudden failure.
