A little historical background

The vast majority of car owners and ordinary people naively believe that Lambo doors are the exclusive invention of Ferruccio Lamborghini, the founder of the famous supercar.

Six months of operation of the lambo doors (hereinafter referred to as LD) on the Opel Astra J OPC have passed. I decided to write about the necessary modifications for more comfortable use.

They make it possible to open the door horizontally (as on original doors) and, if desired, lift it up.

Lambo doors are a well-known car door design. The main difference between such doors and ordinary ones is that they open upward. For this purpose, a special design is used, which is based on only one hinge. In the process of making Lambo doors, the main nuance is the manufacture of hinges responsible for opening them. To make hinges for the Lambo door with your own hands, you will need to purchase shock absorbers from Ford Transit (those that raise the rear hatch) and luggage shock absorbers from Moskvich. Install a foreign shock absorber at the bottom of the structure, which will bear the main load. Attach the shock absorber of a domestic car on top - it will help the device stay in any position.

For ease of alignment, you will need to make marks on the door arch, as well as the door. When trying on, take into account the location of the lambo door - it will not touch the front window pillar.


Lambo hinge installation process

Some versions of the drawings indicate the need to screw an additional strictly vertical tube from the bottom of the structure, which provides better support.

Some blueprints suggest there is a button that will raise your car door, but it will still need to be opened manually to the side. To make it easier to open the doors, you can attach a handle to the bottom of the structure, which will allow you to close the door while sitting in the vehicle.

There are a number of other features that you need to consider when making and trying on devices:

  • To avoid damaging the car fender, remove a piece of the door “goose” and cut out a part of the pillar for it. To do this, you will need a 3 mm thick stand, which is cut with a channel;
  • You can also weld a reinforcement into the door to prevent damage to the mechanism and injury when opening or closing the structure;
  • Car enthusiasts installing such a structure need to check the alignment of the holes and adjust the gaps. If necessary, they should be covered with a rubber or sealant seal;
  • When operating in harsh climate conditions, shock absorbers may wear out ahead of schedule.

A little history

Such doors were first used on the Alfa Romeo Carabo prototype back in the late 60s of the last century. At that time, this decision made an unforgettable impression on the public. This type of design is still liked by many motorists, which is why Lambo doors can be seen even on regular mass-produced models.

Types of Lambo doors:

  • 130 degrees;
  • VLS doors;
  • hybrid solution.

Doors that open at a 130-degree angle are usually installed on tuned cars. Standard Lambo doors have a rotation angle of 90 degrees, but in some models it can even reach 130. The advantage of this design is that there are no problems when getting in/out of the car, compared to standard Lambo doors.

VLS doors are so-called scissor doors. They are designed in such a way that they first need to be opened slightly outward (like regular doors), and then lifted up. Such self-made Lambo doors provide the ability to release the A-pillar, as well as the door frame.

Hybrid doors are a truly unique solution, because they can be opened both horizontally and vertically. They are used by those who appreciate the advantages of two types of car doors.

It is noteworthy that on many production cars with standard doors, it is quite possible to make Lambo doors. For example, very often this solution is used by owners of VAZ cars.   • welded They are attached by welding, which sometimes causes inconvenience during installation;
  • fastened with bolts. The bolts are installed on standard or car-drilled holes.

at 130 degrees. This design is used to create minimal obstacles when getting out of the car and is a modified version of the “scissors” model;

Plus, due to the location of the hinges on domestic cars, you won't need to make a lot of adjustments to get the doors to open upwards.

Is it worth making lambo doors?

Like any design, Lambo doors have certain pros and cons. And we decided to start with the shortcomings.

Disadvantages of Lambo doors:

  • Problems when storing a car in a garage.
  • Needs careful use. Passengers often want to open the door, but do so not very carefully, which leads to deformation of the hinge.
  • The swinging of an open door, and it is impossible to get rid of it.
  • Problematic use in winter. The door must not be lifted sharply when the air temperature drops below zero, since otherwise the shock absorbers will quickly fail.

Disadvantages of kits for installing “universal type” Lambo doors:

  • installation will have to be carried out in other places, for which it is necessary to weld the end part of the door (otherwise, due to the large mass of the door, the foam may simply be torn out);
  • to install hinges, it is often necessary to disassemble the dashboard;
  • To install a hinge inside a car fender, sometimes you need to cut the body pillar;
  • Sometimes, in order to open Lambo doors normally, you need to “inflate” the wings.

Advantages of installing lambo doors:

  • attractive appearance;
  • no problems getting on/off at the parking lot.

Myths about Lambo doors:

  • dirt will flow into the car, as well as onto the clothes of the driver and passengers (in reality there are no such problems);
  • problems with entry/exit (every person who has at least once tried to do this in a car with such doors will easily refute this myth).

Malfunctions - what can break

First of all, it is necessary to dispel the myth that they break almost immediately: after three weeks they really need to be adjusted. The hinges will “sag” a little under pressure, so their position needs to be adjusted.

Another point is related to the untidiness of passengers. Not only do they manage to break the handles of standard doors, the urge to pull the handle towards yourself with all your might does not fade away with tuned parts: if they are pulled too hard, forcing them to move in a horizontal plane, the mechanism becomes loose.

There are several common problems that owners of tuned Priors face:

  • If the machine sits idle for a long time, the hinges sag a lot.
  • An open door will swing, thereby wearing out the mechanism more. There's nothing to be done about it.
  • In winter, they should not be opened too suddenly. This also applies to sudden ascents. Frosty weather is shock absorbers' worst enemy.

We install Lambo doors on a Priora with our own hands

We would like to warn you right away that installing the structure is very difficult; you need to have the appropriate experience and carefully calculate everything. We advise you to choose hinges made of high-strength steel, since these elements are of decisive importance in the reliability of the entire structure.

  1. The hinges must contain needle bearings, as well as gas-filled shock absorbers of sufficient power. It is advisable to make hinges that can open the door horizontally at approximately a 55-degree angle. Thanks to this, you will not have problems getting into the car in a confined space (for example, in a garage), where it is not possible to lift the door.
  2. After you have made Lambo doors for a VAZ or bought them in a store, you need to dismantle the front fenders of the Priora. We need to gain access to the car's body pillar. The choice of location for installing fasteners is made taking into account the following factors:
  • in the closed position, the door must fit well to the sealing elements (distortions are not allowed);
  • when opening, the door should not come into contact with the car body and interior trim;
  • installing Lambo doors on the Lada Priora should not lead to a decrease in body rigidity (otherwise serious difficulties and even deformation of the body may occur).
  1. To avoid the last problem, it is necessary to strengthen the body. This is not difficult to implement - a suitable piece of channel with a thickness of at least 3 mm should be welded into the cutout. In addition, it is advisable to strengthen the door itself so that the mounting bolts do not tear out.
  2. Be sure to stick the appropriate marks on the door arch and the door itself in order to easily center the door at the end of all work. Otherwise there will be problems with closing/opening.
  3. The Lambo door opening mechanism is secured by welding or suitable bolts. The mechanism must then be adjusted using movable bolts.
  4. The gas shock absorbers are installed so that after the maximum vertical opening of the doors they are fully extended. They should not interfere with each other's movement.
  5. The final stage is installing the wings and testing the operation of the Lambo doors.

Installing Lambo doors with your own hands is a wonderful opportunity to make your car truly bright and original. True, first we advise you to carefully weigh all the pros and cons in order to avoid sad mistakes.

How to put

Installation of Priora lambo doors is carried out as follows:

  1. Place special stickers on the wheel arch and then on the door - this will help correct its position.
  2. The installation of the lamp loop can be done with bolts or welding. In an amicable way, you can first fix them with bolts, and after adjustments based on the results of a couple of weeks of use, weld them.
  3. Install gas shock absorbers so that when the doors are at their highest point, they should be fully open.
  4. Try moving the lambo doors. If everything works, install the fenders to check if the doors are touching the body.
