They even sacrifice the more beautiful design of the Lada Granta liftback in order to get a significantly lower price for the car and its availability in terms of maintenance activities.
Impression
In general, I got in, drove out of the car dealership, drove about 10 kilometers and became depressed. I don’t even want to describe my feelings. I immediately took it to armor the front part with anti-chip film. I had to part with the car for another day; I didn’t even drive an hour. The next day I took it, somehow my soul felt happier, I don’t know why.
I forgot to write, the car itself is 502,500 rubles. + 10,000 anticorrosive with fender liners. The dealer installed everything himself before the sale. Therefore, when I arrived, they had already announced a price of 512,500 rubles with these extras. And I didn’t resist. Anticorrosive throughout the bottom and arches is good.
Well, now about the car: the car itself looks okay, but it seems to me that it could be a little wider and a little lower, otherwise it looks somehow awkward from the back. The engine is still being run-in, there’s not much to say yet; in the city it’s quite enough, but on the highway uphill it’s hard for it. Even trucks overtook me up the hill.
Well, I think after the break-in everything will be fixed. I try not to give it more than 3,000 rpm, and on the highway it’s 110 and no more. The gearbox on the new Grant howls—it howls in all gears. The gears are still a little hard to engage, well, everything will probably get used to it.
The noise is average - nothing new here. Somewhere in the front side windows the wind is blowing at speed, you can hear it quite well. The smell in the cabin is, of course, terrible. Everything rattles little by little, something in the panel, in the doors, the rear windows, when closed, also rattle, the front windows, if opened 2-4 cm, also rattle.
The fit is a little high for my height of 192 cm. I would like it lower, but there are no options. Luxury ones have seats with seat height adjustment. I didn't like the instrument panel. The orange scale is not for everyone, and you can’t change the backlight.
There is a lot of space on the dashboard, but it is not used as it should. For example, temp. engine, air temperature, mileage before refueling, gasoline consumption, on-board network voltage, everything could be displayed in a column, but no, you can only set one parameter on the display.
And if you need to look at another one, you have to switch the wiper lever on the joystick. It's annoying, to be honest. Also in the tidy, the edging of the rings is glossy black; something often shines on it. I often get distracted by this, thinking that something is on the display.
The suspension on the new Lada Granta liftback 2022 is quite decent. Maybe it's just new. Pits, bumps - everything works out. The only thing, I already said, is that it’s a little lower, but so far there are no complaints about the suspension.
Reliability
Cars produced by AvtoVAZ are generally considered reliable, but they do not have the highest build quality. Some car owners come across “construction cars” that constantly need to be completed and defects eliminated.
Basically, all the breakdowns are not too major, but they cause a lot of trouble.
The most global problem with VAZ cars, including the Lada Granta, is loose bolts and nuts, low reliability of electronics, poor metal processing, and not very high-quality materials.
What shortcomings do owners note when assembling Lada Granta:
- the door seals are leaky; in heavy rain, water often gets into the interior through them;
- Interior plastic creaks and is easily scratched;
- Any fastener can unscrew - bolts of door hinges, sun visor, fastening the plastic steering column cover, etc.;
- In some places the paint on the body swells and “saffron milk caps” appear.
But many of the shortcomings are compensated for by the low price of the Lada Granta; moreover, the main units, such as the engine and gearbox, break down infrequently, and there are almost no complaints about the reliability of the chassis.
Premature failure of the starter, generator or clutch is noted, but such breakdowns do not occur on all cars, and they are not typical.
Body
For the liftback, as for the sedan, the Lada Kalina platform is taken as the basis. Externally, the car looks impressive and even a little better than its counterpart in a different body. The new rear end blends very well with the face of the car. The entire body is made in a style that is vaguely reminiscent of some Renault models (for example, Sandero or Logan), but at the same time has Korean features. Despite this, the car looks more than decent, especially for its class. Basically, this was achieved thanks to the unusual shape of the car body, which everyone is accustomed to seeing in the form of a sedan. The upper edge of the rear roof has been lowered by 8 mm.
From the factory, an anti-corrosion coating is applied to the bottom of the liftback, like the sedan. For now, the cars are holding up, but time will tell how things will be in the future. But where saffron milk caps have already begun to appear is the exhaust system. Like Renault, the Granta's muffler does not remain “fresh” for long. Already at 15 thousand km, pockets of rust are visible. The chrome on the external parts is poorly applied and over time it begins to slide off. The rest of the body shows itself quite well. The headlights on some cars are poorly sealed, which is why condensation appears in them. This leads to rapid burnout of the lamps.
Suspension
It handles all urban irregularities, so far there are no complaints about it. Those bumps that on the 2112 were crawled over at a crawl at 15 km/h, on the Grant they can be easily passed at 40-50 km/h. It’s possible faster, but why should I systematically kill components and assemblies? There will still be an opportunity to play around in the pits.
The only question about the suspension is that when high speed bumps pass at speeds above 30 km/h, a knock is heard in the front of the car, maybe the shock absorbers are working on rebound (which is unlikely), or maybe the Guarantor pin in the glove compartment rattles (which is more likely). But such crossings are so rare that I still don’t have time to clearly grasp the source of the sound.
Suspension and other parts
It’s probably worth starting with the box, since it is closest to the engine. The most puzzling version is the “automatic”. Everyone who could have done it accused him of being slow to react. But, in contrast to the slow reaction, the unit is quite durable and time-tested. There are complaints about the sound of the mechanics; at high speeds it starts to howl. This has already happened on classics or Niva; it’s hard to say where this disease came from on Grant.
As for the suspension, everything directly depends on the configuration. So, in the “Standard” version, the old design was used, which was also supplied to Kalina. More expensive cars already have their own suspension structure. The front end is not particularly different; it houses a McPherson. This scheme is reliable and has served the automotive industry for decades. The rear part of the car is on an independent suspension with springs. This structure, coupled with special adjustments, is most optimally suited to the conditions on Russian roads.
The ground clearance, as well as the trunk, pleased the owners. The distance from the ground to the bottom of the car is 190 mm. This, together with the impenetrable suspension, allows you to move at fairly high speeds on crushed stone roads. Unless, of course, you don’t mind the rattling rear windows and the paintwork on the hood. In addition, energetic driving in villages and on forest roads is hampered by the lack of crankcase protection, without which the engine is easily vulnerable. Instead, a piece of plastic is inserted, which is no different in strength from the salon one. Of course, protection can be installed at the factory, but before that you must remember to pay the extra money.
Looking at the brakes, you also understand where economists have buried their dog. On the Grant liftback there are discs in front, but in the rear there are drums familiar from the “Classics” and “Samara”. Therefore, the braking distance is somewhat longer than it could be. Base versions don't have power steering, making it a little difficult to turn. The wide steering wheel saves the situation. More expensive cars have electric power steering, which does a good job of handling. And this is provided that from extreme to extreme position the steering wheel makes 3.1 turns. But still, Grante is still far from the controllability of its foreign analogues.
About configurations
In the most budget configuration, “Standard”, the car is equipped with a 1.6 liter, 87-horsepower engine, manual transmission, ISOFIX fastening system, central locking, driver airbag, child lock.
The “Norma” version of the Lada Granta liftback offers two engine options: the first – with a volume of 1.6 liters and a power of 87 hp, the second – with a volume of 1.6 liters, but with a power of 106 hp. Also included in the package are ABS and BAS systems (brake assist), an on-board computer, electric power steering, electric windows on the front doors and a multimedia system.

Taking into account the maximum benefit, I bought a Lada Granta liftback for less than 400 thousand rubles, which was very pleasing. I looked through owner reviews the day before the purchase, so I immediately knew about future shortcomings.
The first “jamb” identified was the sound insulation . You can hear the road almost all the time, not allowing you to really relax behind the wheel. The situation is slightly changed by additional sound insulation.
The seats leave much to be desired. With my massive build, I have to stop and get out of the car from time to time to relax. Manufacturers must definitely work on such aspects better, because it is difficult to come to terms with such shortcomings during a long trip.
The dynamics are present exactly up to 60 km/h. At a decent speed, it feels like a liftback from yesteryear, not a 2022 car. Of course, no one is going to race, but sometimes overtaking the vehicle in front becomes a difficult task.
Engines
Under the hood of all Grants there are engines of the same volume, designed for 1.6 liters. The liftback was no exception. The engine in the car has a sixteen-valve head and produces 106 horses. As a result, the liftback feels quite dynamic and is capable of overtaking some of its class brothers. According to the owners, the engine comes from the bottom. At the same time, the unit is not so gluttonous and consumes, on average, 7-8 liters. Of course, the weight, which is 50-100 kg less than its competitors, played an important role here.
At the factory, the engine received the marking 21127 and was a continuation of the dynasty of Priorov units. A special feature of the engine is the installed resonance chamber on the exhaust system. This made it possible to regulate its volume depending on the number of revolutions. If we talk about the minuses, then all the old VAZ sores have been preserved. Periodic tripping, as well as knocking, clanging and other noises. The main thing is to change timing belts on time. If this is not done, then a “meeting” may occur on the engine. As a result, only squiggles will remain from the valves. But if you don’t “drown” and carry out all maintenance on time, then the unit can last 200 thousand km without major repairs.
The engine contains 3.5 liters of oil, but when replacing it is recommended to pour no more than 3.2 liters. It is recommended to use liquids with a viscosity:
- 5W-40;
- 5W-30;
- 10W-40;
- 15W-40.
Oil is consumed little by little, for one thousand kilometers with a working engine - no more than fifty grams. Despite the cheapness of the car, its engine is powered by far from cheap 95 gasoline.

I took a Lada Granta in a liftback body from the showroom in 2015. The car in the “Lux” configuration cost me 450 thousand rubles. Plus I paid another 50 thousand for OSAGO and CASCO, as well as floor mats and anti-corrosion treatment for the body. Initially, my work colleagues advised me to take the “Lux”, they say, even if there is an overpayment, but there are more useful little things there. And it really is. Air conditioning in the cabin, climate control, heated seats, immobilizer, etc. add aesthetic and practical satisfaction. It was possible to purchase an option with navigation, but I regretted paying the extra 10 thousand rubles. I installed it myself in the end. In general, the car is like a car. It doesn’t cause wild delight, but it doesn’t cause indignation either. My consumption ranges from 5.4 to 5.6 on the highway and somewhere around 8-15 in the city (it all depends on the presence of traffic jams). An interesting point: when driving slowly on an incline and when starting off, sometimes you don’t have to press the gas - the automatic system in the engine stably maintains the speed at 800. Over the 2 years that I’ve been driving the car, I’ve encountered minor issues. So, the rear window washer fluid does not spray, but simply pours. Even when driving over bumps on an uneven road, the rubber bands of the rear shock absorbers creak slightly. Among the advantages, I note a large, convenient trunk. We went to the lake in the summer and even tried to sleep there with the rear seats folded down.

In winter, I never heard the sound of snow rubbing against the bottom of the car. Memory cards and flash drives are readable, so there were no problems listening to music in the cabin. The configuration of the car that I took does not have navigation. I solved this problem by installing a free application from Yandex on my smartphone. The stove is normal. It doesn’t immediately warm up the interior, of course, but quite confidently. In general, take it if you want, take it if you want, but I’m quite happy with the car.

The plastic throughout the entire interior is of very poor quality - apparently the manufacturer decided to save money on it. We decided to find the differences between the two Granta bodies and started with safety. The creators carefully approached the issue of revising the body design. Since the hatchback is inferior to the sedan in terms of resistance to lateral loads, it was decided to strengthen the roof, arches and wings, and increase the overall thickness of the floor sheet. If you compare the Lada Granta with the Samara, which the liftback replaced in the AvtoVAZ model range, the body has become twice as rigid, and accordingly, the model has become safer.
Together with Renault-Nissan specialists, the luxury car has a modernized suspension with gas-filled shock absorbers, thicker stabilizers and stiffer springs. Other trim levels come with the standard sedan suspension.
One of the main distinguishing features of the Lada Granta is the spacious trunk for both a liftback and a hatchback. And although at first glance it is smaller than that of the sedan - 480 versus 440 liters, when folding the rear seats its volume increases by more than one and a half times (760 liters). These figures significantly exceed those of the Lada Kalina, the trunk limit of which stops at 670 liters.
The interior of the Lada Granta has remained virtually unchanged compared to its sedan predecessor. The same console, instrument panel, the same seats. There is enough space in the back seat for three passengers to feel quite comfortable. The only question is the space above your head. If your height is 190 cm or less, you will be comfortable, but taller passengers will find the car uncomfortable.
When conducting test drives of the Lada Granta liftback, many drivers noted that the combination of a powerful engine and relatively low weight (1070 kg) provides decent dynamics for an inexpensive car. The main thing is not to accelerate the car above 150 km/h, since handling and directional stability at top speeds are not at all impressive. With a quiet ride, thanks to the elastic suspension, which is optimal for our roads, the Lada Granta leaves the most pleasant impression.
The brakes can also be praised with flattering words, both during emergency and normal braking. But the advertised sound insulation raises complaints: when driving dynamically, the cabin is noisy, and you have to speak much louder to have a conversation. Average fuel consumption in the city with a manual transmission is 7.9 liters per hundred kilometers, while on the highway it is one liter less. “Automatic”, of course, is more voracious: on average 9.6 liters per hundred kilometers in the city and 8.5 on the highway. However, these are quite modest figures.

The cruise control is a little tricky when turning it on and off, but on the highway it’s a useful thing - it gives your leg a rest. The rain sensor scared me at first when the windshield wipers started working on their own when sprayed with water from oncoming traffic, but I think that the thing is also useful. I have already bought my second Grant, only now a new one. I got normal brakes! On my first Grant, the travel was quite long before it set, and during the test drive of the luxury version there was a car with the same operating principle. Plus, in video reviews, people also noted this.
In general, this is still the same Granta with a normal engine by modern standards, with a good automatic transmission, which does not change a bunch of gears back and forth for the sake of some half-liter of savings, but is absolutely predictable and adequate on descents and ascents, with excellent dynamics for the city and maneuverability, which can be safely used, and not carefully moved, with a cool omnivorous suspension and decent ground clearance.

Externally, I quite liked the Granta FL. The front part of the body is without question at all: modern, beautiful and harmonious. Salon. In general, I liked everything about the cabin, if you take into account the class and price of the car. In terms of space, of course, it’s a bit cramped, but not critical: “you can live,” that’s what I decided for myself... but it’s cheap!

Why "Unfortunately? Because despite the recent update of the car, it is still the same “basin” of the domestic automobile industry, with a huge bunch of sores and problems, which I will tell you about.
I bought this car in the “Luxe” configuration, not the worst, but not the top-end either, so-so. From the manufacturer, the car was equipped with audio preparation, air conditioning and turn signal repeaters on the mirrors.
Externally, the car looks like a foreign car; looking at the front of the car, it’s hard to believe that this is a domestic car. You can immediately see the intervention of foreign specialists who have at least done something, brought some kind of new wave into the domestic automotive industry, but this is not what we are talking about. I'll tell you better about the car itself.
The dynamics of the car remained at the same level, essentially nothing has changed. It was just as slow to accelerate, and in principle it remains that way. I was pleased with the suspension; it easily absorbed all the bumps and bumps on the roads. At the same time, there was relatively little shaking in the cabin. The instrument panel is generally not bad; everything the driver needs is there.
As for the air conditioning, which is an innovation for domestic cars, it blows very weakly, as if it doesn’t exist. It takes a lot of power from the engine, which has a big impact on maneuverability when overtaking.
The paintwork of the body is a completely separate issue. The slightest chip will soon begin to bloom like a chrysanthemum. After so many years of VAZ's existence, they could at least pay attention to the painting of cars. But why? And so it will go.
One of the advantages is the handling of the car, it is light and very nimble, this makes it quite maneuverable, especially in urban conditions. The luggage compartment is large, such a car is not bad for those who like to take a ride to the country. In the “four”, of course, the luggage compartment is larger, but the “four” is a different story. The interior is also quite spacious, with my height being 180 centimeters, I feel quite comfortable in the driver’s seat. The good news is that manufacturers have finally added side supports to the seats; if previously you had to strain your back on sharp turns to avoid falling off, now you don’t need to do this.
The updated car still has an old and very irritating problem - a terrible hum from the mirrors, which is very clearly audible after 80 kilometers per hour.
After the third day of operation, I began to notice that the car began to smoke. At first the color of the smoke was black, as if it were a diesel car, but after a few more days, the smoke acquired a bluish tint.
A month later, the Grant began to start more and more often not immediately, as it was in the first days, now it was necessary to struggle with the ignition, which also indicates that this car has not received any structural improvements over many years.
The worst thing for me was that, for no reason, the Check Engine light came on on the dashboard. The service station explained that the throttle position sensor needed to be replaced. Too little time has passed to change it.
Despite the fact that the car is new, it feels like it is at least 10-15 years old; it begins to crumble very quickly. There is only one justification for all this - this is a domestic car and there is nothing to be surprised about.

Engine. The 16-valve engine installed here is noticeably quieter than the old eight-valve engine that was on my Kalina. It doesn't rattle like a tractor, it runs smoothly. Because of the run-in, I don’t press on the gas, I accelerate smoothly, but the potential is felt. If you have the money, I think you should buy a car with just such an engine. I didn’t regret it, although I initially wanted an eight-valve one.
Fuel consumption was scary at the beginning; the car consumed 12-14 liters in mixed mode. After about 500 kilometers, consumption dropped, and now it is 7.5 liters per hundred in the combined cycle, outside the city 5-5.5 liters. All this takes into account the fact that I don’t put pressure on the gas, I calmly accelerate and brake. My consumption on Kalina was higher - 9-9.5 liters per hundred in mixed mode.
Transmission. Gears shift easier and more clearly than on Kalina. On Kalina it was impossible to stick the first one at low speed, on Grant it was easy. The box howls, but it was the same on Kalina.
Suspension. Honestly, I thought it would be softer. As I understand it, this is exactly the case on sedans, but on liftbacks, in my opinion, the suspension handles bumps more harshly. But still better than on my old Kalina. Significantly better.
Interior and quality of materials. Just as spacious as in Kalina, but due to the change in the front panel and the shape of the glove compartment there is less legroom for the front passenger. The plastic and its scratch resistance will be slightly worse than that of the first generation Kalin plastic. The hardness of the plastic in both cars is approximately the same.
The seats are firmer than on Kalina and hold their shape better. The material of the seat upholstery and floor did not cause any complaints, but because of the black color, every speck is visible.
