Lada Granta gearbox types: manual, automatic and robotic gearbox

The Lada Granta is positioned by the manufacturer as a budget model, which is a slightly simplified car in comparison with the no less popular Kalina, which makes it accessible to a wide range of potential buyers. Many people don’t know what gearbox is on their car. From Kalina, Lada Granta inherited most of the technical components, including: a slightly modified suspension design and a modified mechanical transmission unit. Despite some improvements to this unit, many owners complain about the presence of remaining “diseases” inherent in the previous variation of the box. Among these are: - increased lever travel during switching;

  • difficulties (resistance) at the moment of turning on a certain stage, especially the 5th;
  • the presence of noticeable vibration during operation of the unit.

The manufacturer accepted these complaints and, starting in the fall of 2011, the model received an updated box, which is equipped with a cable drive for the gear shift mechanism. From 10/15/2015, the entire Lada Granta model family, with the exception of the “Standard” version, is equipped with this modified transmission unit.

What gearboxes did it come with?

The Lada Granta passenger car has been in mass production since March 2011; this model replaced the popular Samara series.

Initially, the car was equipped only with a VAZ-2180 five-speed manual transmission; later, automatic and robotic gearboxes were installed on the car.

The cable manual gearbox Lada Granta with index 2181 has been produced since October 2012; it was later modernized, since car owners had many quality complaints about it.

Each type of transmission installed on a Togliatti-made car has its own characteristic differences and weaknesses, the so-called “diseases”.

Manual transmission Lada Granta

The manual transmission installed on the Granta has a long history; in fact, it is the same 5-speed. gearbox, like the VAZ-2108, but repeatedly subject to serious modernization.

From the beginning of Granta's production, the car was equipped with a model 2180 gearbox, with a shift rod, with the gear selection mechanism located at the bottom (inside the body), the same transmission was installed on the first generation Lada Kalina.

A modernized gearbox with index 2181 appeared in 2012, and in the new transmission:

  • The gear shift rod was replaced with two cables;
  • the speed selection mechanism was moved upward, it began to be located outside the housing, not in oil, as it was before;
  • in 1st-2nd gear a multi-cone synchronizer appeared;
  • The clutch housing has been changed; only 2.2 liters of transmission oil are now poured into the box itself, and not 3.3 liters as before.

The use of cables instead of a rod reduced the level of vibration in the body, and in general, speeds began to be switched more clearly, without “searching” for the desired gear.

But this transmission had one characteristic problem - the 2181 gearbox of the first editions emitted a noticeable howl when the car was moving.

There were a lot of complaints from car owners, so AvtoVAZ decided to refine the unit, improving the technology for processing gears and shafts, and in the summer of 2014, Granta with a quieter manual transmission began to roll off the car plant’s assembly line.

Model design

When choosing between several cars, they often look first at the design and interior - the car should be pleasing to the eye. It’s impossible to say which is better: the Granta liftback or the Priora station wagon – “there’s no match for the taste and color of a friend.” It will be enough to give an objective overview of the design concept of these models.

Serial production of the Lada Priora (VAZ-2170) began in 2007. The car became a continuation of the “ten” family, the body underwent minor changes, but someone still recognized the “ten”. In 2013, it was restyled, DRLs were added to the “droplet headlights”, the rear lights and bumpers were changed, slightly “modernizing” the body. Priora looks rather modest, but is quite consistent with its class of budget cars.

Granta is the first car with smoother design features produced by AvtoVAZ. The model was developed on the basis of the Lada Kalina and received the number VAZ-2190 (sedan body). In 2014, serial production of the Granta liftback began (received the number VAZ-2191). In 2018, there was a global restyling of the entire Grant line and their design underwent significant changes, now the car began to look more aggressive and modern.

Automatic transmission

“Automatic” was installed on the car of the Togliatti Automobile Plant from July 2012 to March 2015 - this is 4 speed. Automatic transmission from Japanese manufacturer Jatco.

Grant's four-speed automatic transmission - model JF414E, classic type, with a torque converter; similar units are equipped in Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Suzuki passenger cars.

This type of transmission on Granta is paired only with the 98-horsepower VAZ-21126 power unit.

The gearbox is highly reliable; with careful operation and timely maintenance, it can run up to 200 thousand km.

It is necessary to replace the transmission fluid every 60 thousand km; the manufacturer recommends filling with Nissan branded ATF EJ-1 or Matic-S oil.

Automatic transmission problems.

The quality of the Lada Granta automatic transmission does not cause any major complaints; if the transmission requires repair, it is mainly due to the fault of the driver:

  • as a result of slipping, the clutches burn out;
  • after overheating, gaskets and seals begin to leak;
  • When you hit an obstacle, the automatic transmission pan breaks through, and then a thorough repair is definitely required.

Car owners have more complaints about the performance characteristics of an automatic transmission - increased fuel consumption, sluggish acceleration of the car, jerking during gear changes during dynamic driving.

The first thing a new car owner has to deal with is finding out what technical fluids are in the car and how soon they should be replaced. The engine is considered the main unit, so most often they start with motor oil.

Let us remind you that AvtoVAZ installs the same type of power units on its models, so the recommendations on “what oil to fill in the engine” will be the same for all modern Lada cars (Granta, Priora, Kalina, Largus, Niva, Vesta or XRAY).

AvtoVAZ installs the following engines on Lada cars:

What motor oils are recommended by AvtoVAZ? If you open the Operating Manual for the vehicle and its modifications, not the latest edition, you can find table No. 2 “Motor oils”. Comparing them for different Lada cars, you can understand that AvtoVAZ recommends the same motor oils for Lada Granta/Kalina/Priora engines.

For Lada Vesta, AvtoVAZ recommends using Rosneft brand motor oil, API class SL, SM or SN. What brand of oil does the Lada come from the factory?

  • Engine 1.6: Rosneft ROSNEFT MAGNUM MAXTEC 5W-30 STO 44918199-091-2017 semi-synthetics.
  • Engine 1.8: until 05.2018 LUKOIL GENESIS SAE 5W-40 STO 79345251-040-2010 synthetics, from 05.2018 ROSNEFT MAGNUM MAXTEC 5W-40 STO 44918199-091-2017 semi-synthetics.

From the factory, the engine of the Lada Granta is filled with Rosneft semi-synthetic oil 5W-30. There is no such oil on the market, since it contains special additives that serve for better running-in of the new engine.

Robotic gearbox

The robotic gearbox replaced the 4-speed Jatco automatic transmission; manual transmission has been installed on the Grant since the beginning of spring 2015.

The basis of the mechanical part of the new AMT 2182 was the 2180 gearbox; instead of cables, as well as the standard pedal and clutch unit for “mechanics,” an electromechanical gearbox drive (mechatronics) from the German company ZF was installed here.

The robotic gearbox is only paired with a VAZ-21127 106 hp engine. s., the most powerful power unit installed on the Lada Granta.

The manual transmission can operate not only in automatic, but also in manual mode; there are a total of five gears in the box.

A car with AMT 2182 has become more economical than with an automatic transmission, the dynamics have also improved, and gasoline consumption has decreased.

Typical problems of a robotic gearbox.

The robotic gearbox is based on the 2180 transmission, so it does not have such a strong hum as the 2181 manual transmission.

However, in first and second gears, slight howls are observed, although after running in a new car, the noise may disappear.

Grant's gearbox may behave inappropriately - when driving in first gear and sharply pressing the accelerator pedal, second speed does not always engage, and a “slip” occurs.

A characteristic disadvantage of a manual transmission is jerks and jolts when changing gears; if the movement is dynamic, this unpleasant phenomenon is not observed during quiet driving.

But you can use the manual mode, and then the manual transmission practically becomes a “mechanics”.

Comparative characteristics

From the above we can draw the following conclusion:

  • Granta is cheaper than Kalina;
  • Grant has a modern platform, better handling;
  • to the detriment of safety and quality, Grant simplified the headlight unit and other body parts, but this lowered the price of the car;
  • Grant has a higher quality paintwork. Less susceptible to corrosion, retains natural color longer.
  • Compared to Kalina, Grant has better sound insulation, which allows you to talk in the car even at high speed.

It would be worth considering some parameters in more detail and comparing them.

  1. Appearance of cars. Upon a superficial examination of the new product, it may seem that the Granta is not like other Russian cars. Upon closer inspection, it is noticeable that the side doors are the same as those of the Lada Kalina. And the sedan bodies of both models are generally not much different. The Granta can only be recognized by its large size and a different shape of the bumper and headlights.
  2. Luggage compartment. When it comes to trunk space, the Lada Kalina remains on the bench. Due to the fact that Granta's body is longer than that of Kalina, its trunk is much larger. It’s just that the appearance of the trunk is “lame”, and it doesn’t close the first time. But the size of the trunk is louder than its shortcomings, and this is good news.
  3. Salon overview. Kalina users often received complaints about the unbearable creaking of the panels, a large number of gaps and backlashes. In the new Lada Granta, these shortcomings have been corrected, and the interior makes almost no unnecessary unpleasant sounds. But regarding the plastic in the car, there is a question: is it cheap? Despite this, the interior of the Lada Granta also has its advantages:
  • beautiful and pleasant instrument panel;
  • cup holders installed;
  • the glove compartment has been enlarged;
  • There were no problems with the heater operation.
  1. Steering rack. A significant advantage of the Grant over the Kalina is the shortened steering rack. This solution made it easier to drive the new car. But there was no room in the vehicle for an ashtray, but all was not lost.
  2. Power unit. The engines in both cars are almost the same, but the Granta has some advantages. With the same number of valves per cylinder, the Kalina engine is capable of developing a power of 82 horsepower, and

    Grant - 90. Such indicators can be explained by the fact that the latter has a lightweight connecting rod and piston group. The Granta's power unit works faster, unlike the Kalina, and there is no unnecessary noise.

  3. Safety system. It is worth noting that the Grant has two airbags, which cannot be said about the Kalina, and this is a good indicator, considering the new product as a budget car.

In addition, the new product, like its competitor Lada Kalina, will exist in a hatchback body. Granta in a hatchback body looks more youthful, but Lada Kalina is more functional in terms of transporting large loads.

Gearbox selection

All types of gearboxes on the Lada have their advantages and disadvantages, but even the domestically assembled Grant gearboxes do not cause very big problems for car owners.

If we do not take into account the slight noise of the mechanical part of the transmission, then we can say that the “robot” and “mechanics” are quite reliable, without pronounced characteristic “diseases”.

For those who like a leisurely drive and comfortable driving, an automatic transmission is best; there is only one drawback - increased gas consumption.

Although the manual transmission whines, the noise does not particularly affect its service life; during normal operation, it can travel about two hundred thousand kilometers without problems.

The electronics in the robotic box sometimes malfunction, and you need to get used to the specifics of driving a car with AMT.

Which transmission to choose for the Lada Granta is a personal matter for each motorist; a lot here depends on the preferences of the driver himself.

ROPE DRIVE

Despite the simplicity and low price, almost all manufacturers abandoned the rod drive, like on the old box. Today, designs of several rods with complex scenes are used to dampen vibrations on the lever, or a more expensive and convenient cable drive. AVTOVAZ experimented with the latter back at Samara, purchasing parts from. But with the switching mechanism located at the bottom, the performance of such a circuit is problematic, and the price of components was scary at that time. Work on the cable-driven gearbox continued as part of other projects, but the production model could only be realized now.

Automation features

The box has several operating modes. Here the first and second gears are fixed. There is a button to turn off overdrive. It prevents the automatic transmission from shifting to 4th gear. This is great for overtaking on highways. Engineers developed fixed gears for long uphill climbs or for off-road driving. In winter, the Lada Granta automatic starts immediately, without warming up.

The box will not want to engage in higher gears. In order not to subject the box to unnecessary loads, the electronics will turn on the third only after the oil in the box has warmed up to 15 ° C. The fourth will turn on when the temperature reaches 60 °C. For those who love and are interested in technical nuances, it must be said that the power units do not have a flywheel. A drive disk is used instead.

Service

The only way to maintain the 2181 gearbox on a Grant is to change the oil in a timely manner. The replacement interval is 70 thousand km.

Manual transmission service

The oil change procedure looks like this:

Oil change for Lada Granta

For “mechanics” it is very advisable to wash the box when changing the oil, this way it will live longer.

Clutch Drive Maintenance

The clutch drive does not need to be serviced; it is simply easy to maintain. Chafing of the cable and damage to the drive itself can lead to increased noise when the clutch is disengaged and to its incomplete engagement.

It is very advisable to lubricate the cable, and if it is worn out, replace it. Periodically, the clutch needs to be adjusted and the pedal travel monitored.

Maintenance and adjustment of the cable drive (gear selection system)

It also needs lubrication and supervision. There is no way to adjust the cable drive on the Grant purely technically, because the engineers did not provide for such a possibility. Craftsmen try to simply tighten the cables or move the fastening ears, but the method is not very effective.
