The presence of active safety system components for a modern car is gradually becoming a generally accepted standard. However, in general, this is a rather capacious concept, since there are already about a dozen such components. And all of them are designed to prevent emergency situations by taking control of the car at critical moments into their own hands.
One of them is the exchange rate stability system, which appeared relatively recently, but is already being implemented by most of the world's automakers in their latest generation models.
Before we move on to what a VSC system is in a car, let’s define some terms. Directional stability is the ability of a vehicle to maintain its vector of motion, preventing the vehicle from overturning or skidding. Controllability is understood as the ability of a vehicle to move at any time in the direction chosen by the driver.
What does Check VSC System mean?
A light with the Check VSC System error that lights up on the dashboard display of the Land Cruiser 200 indicates a problem with the stability of the vehicle. The abbreviation VSC stands for Vehicle Stability Control. In Russian - “System of exchange rate stability.”
Automakers began to install this system on almost every car. VSC monitors the vehicle's driving speed and direction. It calculates the parameters between acceleration and braking of the vehicle and prevents skidding, replenishing lost traction.

BMW, together with Robert Bosch GmbH and Continental Automotive Systems, developed a system that reduces the torque transmitted by the engine to the wheel to prevent skidding and applied it to the 1992 BMW model range. From 1987 to 1992, Mercedes-Benz and Robert Bosch GmbH jointly developed the vehicle's electronic stability control system and called it "Elektronisches Stabilitätsprogramm" (ESP).
History of Mercedes-Benz A-Class
The ESC system was created in 1995, but it managed to make itself known only two years later, when the first compact Mercedes-Benz A-Class debuted. During its design, serious mistakes were made, which led to the fact that the new model had a tendency to tip over even at not very high speeds when performing maneuvers such as “rearrangement” (“moose” test, avoiding an obstacle).
A scandal broke out in Europe; sales of Mercedes-Benz A-class cars were suspended, and cars already sold were recalled to eliminate deficiencies. The company's engineers were faced with a problem: how to solve the problem of increasing stability without redesigning the car and maintaining its consumer qualities. This task was solved to a large extent by the installation of a suitably configured ESC system since February 1998.
The main ESC controller is two microprocessors, each with 56 KB of memory. The system allows you to read and process values produced by wheel speed sensors with a 20-millisecond interval. In addition to the A-Class, the ESP system is standard equipment on the Mercedes S-Class, E-Class and others. Daimler-Chrysler vehicles use ESC systems from the leader in this field, Bosch. Bosch ESC systems are also used by Alfa-Romeo, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche and others.
In fact, it was the case of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class that paved the way for the widespread introduction of electronic stability control on European cars.

ESP is activated during oversteer and understeer. Such handling problems occur when there is insufficient traction, which can occur when the speed of entry into a turn is exceeded or in the winter season, when the roads are covered with ice and snow.
If the front part of the car is drifting, the exchange rate stability system brakes the rear wheels, which allows the front axle to return to the required trajectory. At the same time, engine torque is reduced, which restores the vehicle's traction with the road. If the rear axle drifts, the safety system brakes the front wheels, which allows the car to be leveled.
If the car gets into a slippery area and there is slippage or drift of all four wheels, then, depending on the data received from various sensors, the control unit of the exchange rate stability system will brake various wheels, simultaneously influencing the engine, which will help maintain the desired trajectory.
Advantages and disadvantages of this technology
If we talk about the advantages of this technology, we note its high response speed. Typically, it takes about 20 milliseconds from the sensor receiving the relevant data about the risk of skidding to the necessary activation of the brake mechanism.
Such a system operates smoothly and independently, so the driver becomes aware of electronic interference in the operation of the car solely by the indicators on the dashboard that light up. Whereas the car, even if it is in significant danger, through the intervention of such an electronic stability control system will always maintain its trajectory, providing the necessary safety to the driver and passengers of the car.
Some models of the stability control system allow you to completely turn off the electronics. However, many automakers have made some tricks for safety reasons, offering the driver the opportunity to completely turn off such electronic Cerberus, but if a skid occurs, the system is activated and levels the car.
If we talk about the shortcomings of this system, we note that such a stability control system is still not capable of ensuring complete vehicle safety. You must understand that if you try to enter a sharp turn at a speed of 100 km/h or even more, then no stability control system will be able to keep the car on the trajectory, and the car will simply be thrown off the road. From the moment the car starts moving, sensors installed on the wheel hubs continuously provide data to the on-board computer.
- The ECU constantly compares the rotational speed and acceleration of the drive wheels with the same characteristics of the driven wheels;
- If the rotation passes the threshold where slippage begins, the TCS engages the differential on the brake valve that controls the brake cylinder. In this case, the torque of the engine is supplied to the braked ramp;
- Some TCS versions hold the ignition or reduce the amount of fuel supplied to individual cylinders at speeds exceeding 80 km/h to reduce engine power. All these system actions help prevent driver errors and avoid critical situations.
Professional drivers are often dissatisfied with the performance of traction control, since power losses affect the performance and torque of the car. However, for beginners or people overestimating their driving skills, this system is vital. Note that on most models TCS can be disabled. But you shouldn’t abuse its locking: it is quite possible that it will be the one that will save the integrity of the car and the health of the people in it at an extreme moment.

Lada Vesta continues to undergo testing in the winter season. This time, a 700 m long sports ice track was chosen as a testing ground. The purpose of the test was to test the electronic motion stabilization systems of the Lada Vesta in various situations. As expected, the car is equipped with Nokian winter studded tires.
The first test was carried out with the ESP and ABS systems disabled. To do this, it is necessary to completely de-energize them, i.e., remove the fuse. Otherwise, even if the key to disable the stability control system is pressed, the computer will turn it on automatically when the speed reaches 50 km.

The drive wheels clearly control the road, and the rear begins to drift. An experienced driver can easily cope with such a situation by adding gas, which has no restrictions. Even on ice, Vesta behaves predictably. Once again, excellent handling should be noted. The car responds adequately to every movement of the steering wheel, turns smoothly and behaves well when driving in an arc.
In the second case, all electronics are connected. From the start, it is clear that the car does not lose much of its dynamism. Again, I would like to note the presence of good studded tires. The ESP and ABS systems do not immediately respond to changing situations. Troubles can only begin after the car is completely demolished. In this case, Vesta, rushing sideways, is no longer subject to electronics. At the same time, it is more difficult for the driver to cope with the situation, since the gas is under computer control and pressing hard does not bring results.
Conclusion
Comparing the results, it can be noted that with the driving assistance systems turned off, the car covered the track faster by as much as 8 seconds. Slower passage with ESP and ABS operating is associated with the evaluation actions of the electronics. However, it significantly relieves the driver’s stress when driving the Lada Vesta on ice. The choice of driving with or without the electronics turned on depends solely on the driver’s experience and driving style.
In addition to ice and snow, winter can present other conditions in which electronics installed on a car can pull out of an almost hopeless situation.
Find and Replace
VS Code allows you to quickly find text and replace in the currently opened file. Press ⌘F (Windows, Linux Ctrl+F) to open the Find Widget in the editor, search results will be highlighted in the editor, overview ruler and minimap.
If there are more than one matched result in the current opened file, you can press Enter and ⇧Enter (Windows, Linux Shift+Enter) to navigate to next or previous result when the find input box is focused.
Seed Search String From Selection
When the Find Widget is opened, it will automatically populate the selected text in the editor into the find input box. If the selection is empty, the word under the cursor will be inserted into the input box instead.

Find In Selection
By default, the find operations are run on the entire file in the editor. It can also be run on selected text. You can turn this feature on by clicking the hamburger icon on the Find Widget.
If you want it to be the default behavior of the Find Widget, you can set to , or to , if you want it to be run on selected text only when multiple lines of content are selected.
Advanced find and replace options
In addition to find and replace with plain text, the Find Widget also has three advanced search options:
- Match Case
- Match Whole Word
- Regular Expression
The replace input box support case preserving, you can turn it on by clicking the Preserve Case (AB) button.
Multiline support and Find Widget resizing
You can search multiple line text by pasting the text into the Find input box and Replace input box. Pressing inserts a new line in the input box.
While searching long text, the default size of Find Widget might be too small. You can drag the left sash to enlarge the Find Widget or double click the left sash to maximize it or shrink it to its default size.
