VAZ 2110 engines 8 and 16 valves (carburetor and injector)

VAZ-2110 or, more precisely, 21106, in a coupe body, is a very unusual and rare car, which is known only to a small circle of true connoisseurs of the domestic automotive industry.

But actually it is not. The car was produced from 1995 until about 2007 or 2008 (there is evidence that perhaps a little longer) by AvtoVAZ in conjunction with. It is small-scale. Therefore, over the years of production, only a small number of such cars were created - 18 copies.

Looking at this car, the first thing that comes to mind is that this is a very original homemade product, created from an ordinary “ten”, which, through the efforts of an anonymous master, became a two-door one and received unique sporting features.

Design

Despite the fact that in the appearance and in the interior design of this unusual Lada, everyone can recognize the familiar 2110, it received its original features with a clear hint of a sporty character. They are especially evident in the exterior of the car.

Exterior

The VAZ coupe turned out to be in many ways similar to the tuned “ten”. At the same time, its main difference from this model is the two-door coupe body. It is interesting that the dimensions of this small-scale machine remained almost the same as those of its popular and truly popular “brother”. But at the same time, the exterior of the car began to look more original and sporty due to some fairly simple and win-win solutions.

When looking at such a “ten” from the front, it is impossible not to notice the headlights of an unusual round shape. In fact, this effect was achieved due to a special plastic lining on the regular headlights, characteristic of the 2110. Otherwise, the car looks normal here.

From the sides, small stampings are noticeable on the front and rear fenders, as well as a slightly modified shape of the rear fenders. They give the VAZ-20106 a sporty and stylish look, uncharacteristic of other products of the domestic manufacturer at that time. This turned out to be a very unexpected decision for the Russian brand at that time. Also, the front doors became wider due to the fact that the car was made in a two-door coupe version.

At the rear, as well as at the front, you can see round lights, which was achieved through the use of special plastic linings. In addition, a small spoiler was installed on the trunk of the car to give it a sporty style and improve aerodynamic qualities.

Also, some copies of this model were equipped with original plastic body kits, usually painted in body color. But cars were also produced with conventional front and rear bumpers, characteristic of the VAZ-2110.

Interestingly, most of these unusual “ten” had a two-tone body color. The roof and side pillars were usually painted black, in contrast to all other body elements. This was also a very bold decision for AvtoVAZ in those years. By the way, the manufacturer still does not use this color on any other model. In addition, some examples were equipped with a sunroof, which was not only an original design solution, but also ensured coolness in the cabin in hot weather.

From the factory, such cars were usually supplied with alloy wheels of a characteristic shape and a very stylish design.

Interior

Inside, such a VAZ has practically no noticeable differences from the usual “ten” in interior design. But at the same time, he received a number of interesting and unexpected technical innovations.

Security and Multimedia

Of course, in this coupe it is impossible to find airbags or modern electronic stabilization systems and driver assistance in difficult road conditions. But at the same time, some advanced options for the Russian manufacturer at that time turned out to be available, which were then practically not found in other production models.

  • Power steering;
  • Air conditioner;
  • Rear and front electric windows.

All these functions made driving more comfortable and safe.

Cars of this small-scale modification were equipped with conventional 1DIN size radios with a radio and a compartment for CDs or cassettes. These devices did not have high sound quality. Also, the car could not boast of sound insulation. True, the coupe, like all other cars of the tenth family, turned out to be very convenient for this kind of independent upgrades. Therefore, owners can easily install almost any suitable audio device, speakers and other audio equipment in them, or make high-quality noise insulation.

Salon

The interior of 21106 is practically indistinguishable from a regular VAZ-2110. It also seats five people including the driver. But at the same time, rear passengers may experience some inconvenience when boarding the car, since it is done through the front passenger door.

The dashboard, as well as the interior trim, is made of inexpensive black plastic. It contains standard analog instruments of a large shape and with the usual greenish backlight. Some cars were equipped with an on-board computer from the factory. The functions are controlled by buttons and levers located on the “dashboard” below the radio.

The steering wheel of this unusual modification remains the usual “ten” and is of medium size. At the same time, it received a hydraulic booster, which made driving the vehicle much easier.

The seats were also installed as usual for the entire tenth VAZ family. They are covered with fabric, the color of which could vary, and have a minimal number of manual adjustments.

Trunk

The luggage compartment of the coupe is impressive in size. Its volume is 430 liters, which seems a little strange for a car that was positioned as a sports car. But at the same time, the regular “ten” has the same trunk. Therefore, a small-scale machine can easily be used to transport even fairly large cargo.

“Hot Ten”: why everyone loved the two-liter VAZ-21106

We recently talked about how difficult it was for the ordinary Togliatti “ten” to be born. VAZ designers always dreamed of some more powerful, “sporty” modification in the style of the German GTI. Initially, the plans for the 2110 family included just such a modification - the three-door hatchback 2113 (not to be confused with Samara-2 with the same index!).

However, the “especially powerful ten” appeared with the participation of other Togliatti enthusiasts: at MIMS-96 the “Yellow Shark” concept car was presented, which was a joint project of AVTOVAZ and. Why was the “super ten” needed? The answer is very simple - for homologation in the WRC group, a certain number of “civilian” versions were necessary. In addition, at the end of the dashing nineties in the Russian Federation there was already a demand for such “hot” versions of VAZs. After all, a “ten” “charged” in this way allowed the owner to amuse his ego and pride by “punishing” some “Boomer” from a traffic light.

Surprisingly, for almost the first time in its modern history, the manufacturer began to install foreign power units on this car. In this case, the choice fell on.

Such VAZs were produced with two types of engines, which had the following characteristics:

  • Volume - 2 liters, injector, power - 148 horsepower;
  • Injector with a volume of 2 liters, producing up to 136 hp.

The engines have incredible power output for VAZs of that time. They provide the car with significantly faster acceleration to 100 km/h than is typical for a regular sedan of the tenth family. The coupe's top speed also seems incredible. After all, it can accelerate to 205 km/h, which seems like a real fantasy for a VAZ car designed for public roads. By the way, it is amazingly economical and consumes a little more than 8 liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers in the combined cycle.

The Lada coupe is a front-wheel drive car and is equipped with a manual transmission, proven over the years and installed on many other cars of this family.

Suspension and road behavior

The VAZ-21106 has an independent MacPherson-type suspension at the front, and a semi-independent suspension equipped with a transverse stabilizer at the rear. Suspension parts are quite reliable and, if replaced, are inexpensive, as for all AvtoVAZ cars of the tenth family.

The coupe has very good handling and fairly predictable behavior on the road, thanks to improved suspension settings. At the same time, its acceleration seems incredible for a domestic car of that time. The machine is easy to control even when driving at very high speeds. Therefore, it can be called sporty, of course, as much as a slightly modernized “ten” with an Opel engine can be. It is, of course, pointless to talk about its safety and comfort. But at the same time, the car copes well with difficult road conditions. It is perfect for both city driving and highway driving.

In this case, you will be pleased to know that this kind of modernization is allowed. Of course, this process is thorough and cannot be completed without careful preparation. But the result will really justify itself. If you have any doubts, just read the next few paragraphs of the text.

Without going into technical details, the essence of tuning is to replace the cylinder head with a new one. Of course, now you will have two camshafts, and you will also have to rack your brains over the fastening system, because the diameters of the holes in the 16 valve head do not correspond to those on the 8 valve head.

The mounting holes of the block head should be drilled, increasing the diameter from 10 to 12 millimeters.

You can do this yourself, but it is better to contact a specialized workshop. For this kind of work they should not charge more than 3-4 hundred rubles. It should also be taken into account that the standard mounting bolt for the 16-valve cylinder block is slightly smaller than that for the “eight” and must be shortened accordingly.

It is better to study in advance what a 16-valve engine is like on a VAZ 2110 and then you will certainly be able to carry out this kind of tuning yourself. It will be necessary to change the timing belt, pump pump, rollers, wiring, spark plugs, connecting rod mechanism and other structural elements due to the peculiarity of the cylinder head. The head is assembled separately before installation on the engine. After completing the work, it is also advisable to use specialized services for setting up and calibrating the operation of the internal combustion engine.

Options and prices

It is not very correct to talk about the configurations of the VAZ-21106 coupe, since there were practically none as such, since this car is a small-scale one. Therefore, we can say that almost every specimen was unique and inimitable in some way. At the same time, the cars mainly differed in the power of the power unit. In addition, during its existence, the model has undergone several modernizations, which mainly concerned its appearance. Therefore, the appearance of such cars may have all sorts of differences.

The cost of such unusual sports “ten” cars was slightly higher than cars in the usual sedan body. Currently, since production has long been discontinued, such a coupe can only be purchased on the secondary market. At the same time, there are incredibly few offers due to the rarity of the modification. It is not surprising that the copies found on sale are usually not cheap. The cost is influenced not only by the uniqueness of the model, but also by the technical condition, appearance, as well as the needs of the owner himself.

with a two-liter engine: the history of the VAZ-21106

In the nineties, various tuning companies began to be actively created in Russia, trying to refine and diversify the appearance of domestic cars. Following the general wave, VAZ designers Andrey Ruzanov and Nikita Matyukhin decided to open a tuning studio.

Their first work was tuning body kits for “Samara” and “Niva”, after which they had the idea to transform the look of the recently released “tens”. In a short time, in order to be in time for the international motor show, a sports body kit was created, which included bumpers, a radiator grille, extended fenders and door sills. Also, original wheels were made for the prototype, and it itself was painted yellow, which is why it was called the “Yellow Shark”. This is how it appeared before visitors to the MIMS 1996 auto show.

But the “Yellow Shark” was only a prototype with external tuning, and the engine and transmission remained unchanged. At the MIMS-1996 exhibition, this car was highly appreciated and received a special prize. After this, further work on it began to be carried out in the Pilot Industrial Production (EPP) of VAZ.

In the meantime, VAZ decided to create a sports car with a two-liter engine for Group A rallies. But this was not so easy, because for the car to participate in racing it was necessary to produce at least 2,500 civilian versions of such cars per year. And it was decided to take the above-mentioned “Shark” as the basis for this car. The “racing” version of the “ten” has undergone major modifications and received a separate index - VAZ-21106.
