The front wheel drives of the Lada Granta/Kalina transmit torque from the gearbox to the front drive wheels, regardless of the angle of rotation of the wheels and the position of the suspension.
Each drive consists of two constant velocity joints (CV joints) and a shaft connecting the joints. The short shaft of the left drive is made of steel rod, the long shaft of the right drive is made of steel pipe.

The Lada Kalina station wagon (factory code VAZ 1117) appeared on the country's roads in early 2007. This car was developed on the basis of the VAZ 1118 sedan, which entered the market 3 years earlier. Like all cars of this model range, Kalina 1117 was created for intensive driving in urban conditions and, depending on the configuration, was equipped with 2 different injection engines, which provided the car with excellent dynamics. Despite similar speed and technical characteristics, the station wagon had a number of advantages compared to a hatchback car. Firstly, it was 19 centimeters longer, which significantly improved the comfort of rear seat passengers and increased the volume of cargo carried. Secondly, the station wagon’s ground clearance is 2.5 cm higher, which ensures better cross-country ability on snowy and dirt roads.
During the production process, the machine was constantly modernized. In 2010, buyers were surprised by the new interior design. In 2011, the car began to comply with EURO 4 environmental standards and received an electronic gas pedal. But despite constant updates, in the spring of 2013 the 1st generation station wagon was discontinued.
"Kalina" or "Priora": what about the equipment?
Until the second half of the 2000s it was very bad. AvtoVAZ is slow to introduce innovations, so their cars reached more or less European levels (early 90s) only in 2013. It was then that both Kalina and Priora received (all or separately) airbags, ESP, heated windows, air conditioning, automatic transmission (Kalina), a media system with navigation and support for SD cards.
Everything before 2013 is pain, poverty and mud: the list of options included ESD (periodically jamming) and ABS.
The restyling of the 13th year also had a positive effect on the visual component: the plastics are still just as cheap, but at least the parts are neat; The climate control unit, for example, has become similar to a Volkswagen one from the early 2000s. Which is actually a compliment.

Suspension
The Lada Kalina car was equipped with an independent suspension. Unlike the dependent one, it did not affect the ground clearance when the car moved over uneven surfaces. Each wheel, falling into a hole, or vice versa, driving over a hill, did not affect the other, located on the same axis.

The 1.6-liter 16-valve VAZ 21126 is not only the most powerful, but also the most reliable. Sensors, ignition coils and thermostat also fail here, but much less frequently. The wedge of the tension roller or pump is dangerous here; the belt immediately breaks when the valves bend.
The manual transmission of the VAZ 1118 is known for incomprehensible shifts and loss of reverse gear. It also screams at certain speeds and has a low synchronizer life.
On cars of recent years of production there are VAZ 2181 mechanics with a cable drive. This box is not perfect, but compared to the old one it is much more pleasant to use.
The suspension is standard and affordable. Only the wheel bearings and springs do not move enough. After 100,000 km, the silent blocks of the levers and ball joints will have to be changed.
There are no special problems with the brakes, the main thing is to buy regular pads instead of the standard ones. The control rack can begin to knock already at 50,000 km, and there have also been defective EURs.

As for the technical features, the Lada Kalina 2 has also undergone significant changes. Despite the fact that the engine volume remained the same (1.6 liters), it received a Garrett GT25 turbine, turning into a turbocharged engine with 197 horsepower. Even with all the desire, one turbine could not have created an engine so massive. This was facilitated by:

- improving the efficiency of the cooling and lubrication system (introducing an additional radiator to cool the oil).

The main advantage of the all-wheel drive of Kalina 2 is its constancy, in other words, there is no redistribution of torque. If we look at this constructively, then the front and rear axles are connected thanks to the center differential: the rear and front wheels are connected twice by means of blocking the viscous coupling and the high-friction differential of the rear axle. It follows from this that, on the one hand, the new Lada is deprived of an all-wheel drive scheme in its traditional understanding, and on the other hand, all this does not represent an electrical imitation of the rotation of all wheels.
Taking into account the structural configurations that affected the boxes of this VAZ model, and the improved capabilities of the engine, the suspension could not remain unchanged. The rear suspension system has a new diagonal design, providing excellent maneuverability. In any case, such modernization will not hinder the car, especially if you take into account its dynamic characteristics.
As a result, the updated motor can show a rotation speed of 7000–8000 rpm. In combination with good tires and a tuned suspension, this will allow the car to feel confident not only when driving on a straight road, but also when cornering. A car equipped with all-wheel drive simply cannot behave any other way.

Another unique feature of the engine is the placement of the water pump, which is rotated by the same timing belt. In other words, in the event of cooling water leaks or corresponding noise/whistle/rumble in the timing drive area, checking the belt is imperative. If the pump bearing crumbles and the belt comes off, then in addition to replacing the water pump housing and belt, you will also have to go through the cylinder head, removing bent valves from there.
As an unusual belt, Avtovaz uses a very reliable Gates belt. Often the service life of the Gates belt is even higher than the service life of the pump and tension pulley of the Lada Kalina 8-valve engine.
